Quantifying the effect of polymer blending through molecular modelling of cyanurate polymers.

ABSTRACT: Modification of polymer properties by blending is a common practice in the polymer industry. We report here a study of blends of cyanurate polymers by molecular modelling that shows that the final experimentally determined properties can be predicted from first principles modelling to a good degree of accuracy. There is always a compromise between simulation length, accuracy and speed of prediction. A comparison of simulation times shows that 125ps of molecular dynamics simulation at each temperature provides the optimum compromise for models of this size with current technology. This study opens up the possibility of computer aided design of polymer blends with desired physical and mechanical properties.

Significantly Increasing the Ductility of High Performance Polymer Semiconductors through Polymer Blending.

Project description:Polymer semiconductors based on donor-acceptor monomers have recently resulted in significant gains in field effect mobility in organic thin film transistors (OTFTs). These polymers incorporate fused aromatic rings and have been designed to have stiff planar backbones, resulting in strong intermolecular interactions, which subsequently result in stiff and brittle films. The complex synthesis typically required for these materials may also result in increased production costs. Thus, the development of methods to improve mechanical plasticity while lowering material consumption during fabrication will significantly improve opportunities for adoption in flexible and stretchable electronics. To achieve these goals, we consider blending a brittle donor-acceptor polymer, poly[4-(4,4-dihexadecyl-4H-cyclopenta[1,2-b:5,4-b']dithiophen-2-yl)-alt-[1,2,5]thiadiazolo[3,4-c]pyridine] (PCDTPT), with ductile poly(3-hexylthiophene). We found that the ductility of the blend films is significantly improved compared to that of neat PCDTPT films, and when the blend film is employed in an OTFT, the performance is largely maintained. The ability to maintain charge transport character is due to vertical segregation within the blend, while the improved ductility is due to intermixing of the polymers throughout the film thickness. Importantly, the application of large strains to the ductile films is shown to orient both polymers, which further increases charge carrier mobility. These results highlight a processing approach to achieve high performance polymer OTFTs that are electrically and mechanically optimized.

Precise Control of Both Dispersity and Molecular Weight Distribution Shape by Polymer Blending.

Project description:The breadth and the shape of molecular weight distributions can significantly influence fundamental polymer properties that are critical for various applications. However, current approaches require the extensive synthesis of multiple polymers, are limited in dispersity precision and are typically incapable of simultaneously controlling both the dispersity and the shape of molecular weight distributions. Here we report a simplified approach, whereby on mixing two polymers (one of high Đ and one of low Đ), any intermediate dispersity value can be obtained (e.g. from 1.08 to 1.84). Unrivalled precision is achieved, with dispersity values obtained to even the nearest 0.01 (e.g. 1.37→1.38→1.39→1.40→1.41→1.42→1.43→1.44→1.45), while maintaining fairly monomodal molecular weight distributions. This approach was also employed to control the shape of molecular weight distributions and to obtain diblock copolymers with high dispersity accuracy. The straightforward nature of our methodology alongside its compatibility with a wide range of polymerisation protocols (e.g. ATRP, RAFT), significantly expands the toolbox of tailored polymeric materials and makes them accessible to all researchers.

Tunable Semiconducting Polymer Nanoparticles with INDT-Based Conjugated Polymers for Photoacoustic Molecular Imaging.

Project description:Photoacoustic imaging combines both excellent spatial resolution with high contrast and specificity, without the need for patients to be exposed to ionizing radiation. This makes it ideal for the study of physiological changes occurring during tumorigenesis and cardiovascular disease. In order to fully exploit the potential of this technique, new exogenous contrast agents with strong absorbance in the near-infrared range, good stability and biocompatibility, are required. In this paper, we report the formulation and characterization of a novel series of endogenous contrast agents for photoacoustic imaging in vivo. These contrast agents are based on a recently reported series of indigoid π-conjugated organic semiconductors, coformulated with 1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine, to give semiconducting polymer nanoparticles of about 150 nm diameter. These nanoparticles exhibited excellent absorption in the near-infrared region, with good photoacoustic signal generation efficiencies, high photostability, and extinction coefficients of up to three times higher than those previously reported. The absorption maximum is conveniently located in the spectral region of low absorption of chromophores within human tissue. Using the most promising semiconducting polymer nanoparticle, we have demonstrated wavelength-dependent differential contrast between vasculature and the nanoparticles, which can be used to unambiguously discriminate the presence of the contrast agent in vivo.

Quantifying Molecular-Level Cell Adhesion on Electroactive Conducting Polymers using Electrochemical-Single Cell Force Spectroscopy.

Project description:Single Cell Force Spectroscopy was combined with Electrochemical-AFM to quantify the adhesion between live single cells and conducting polymers whilst simultaneously applying a voltage to electrically switch the polymer from oxidized to reduced states. The cell-conducting polymer adhesion represents the non-specific interaction between cell surface glycocalyx molecules and polymer groups such as sulfonate and dodecylbenzene groups, which rearrange their orientation during electrical switching. Single cell adhesion significantly increases as the polymer is switched from an oxidized to fully reduced state, indicating stronger cell binding to sulfonate groups as opposed to hydrophobic groups. This increase in single cell adhesion is concomitant with an increase in surface hydrophilicity and uptake of cell media, driven by cation movement, into the polymer film during electrochemical reduction. Binding forces between the glycocalyx and polymer surface are indicative of molecular-level interactions and during electrical stimulation there is a decrease in both the binding force and stiffness of the adhesive bonds. The study provides insight into the effects of electrochemical switching on cell adhesion at the cell-conducting polymer interface and is more broadly applicable to elucidating the binding of cell adhesion molecules in the presence of electrical fields and directly at electrode interfaces.

A Method for Quantifying Molecular Interactions Using Stochastic Modelling and Super-Resolution Microscopy.

Project description:We introduce the Interaction Factor (IF), a measure for quantifying the interaction of molecular clusters in super-resolution microscopy images. The IF is robust in the sense that it is independent of cluster density, and it only depends on the extent of the pair-wise interaction between different types of molecular clusters in the image. The IF for a single or a collection of images is estimated by first using stochastic modelling where the locations of clusters in the images are repeatedly randomized to estimate the distribution of the overlaps between the clusters in the absence of interaction (IF = 0). Second, an analytical form of the relationship between IF and the overlap (which has the random overlap as its only parameter) is used to estimate the IF for the experimentally observed overlap. The advantage of IF compared to conventional methods to quantify interaction in microscopy images is that it is insensitive to changing cluster density and is an absolute measure of interaction, making the interpretation of experiments easier. We validate the IF method by using both simulated and experimental data and provide an ImageJ plugin for determining the IF of an image.

Dependence of pharmacokinetics and biodistribution on polymer architecture: effect of cyclic versus linear polymers.

Project description:The ability of a polymer to reptate through a nanopore has an influence on its circulatory half-life and biodistribution, since many physiological barriers contain nanopores. A cyclic polymer lacks chain ends, and therefore, cyclic polymers with molecular weights greater than the renal threshold for elimination should circulate longer than their linear-polymer counterparts when injected into animals. As predicted, radiolabeled cyclic polymers with molecular weights greater than the renal threshold have longer blood circulation times in mice than do linear polymers of comparable molecular weight.

Configurational Molecular Glue: One Optically Active Polymer Attracts Two Oppositely Configured Optically Active Polymers.

Project description:D-configured poly(D-lactic acid) (D-PLA) and poly(D-2-hydroxy-3-methylbutanoic acid) (D-P2H3MB) crystallized separately into their homo-crystallites when crystallized by precipitation or solvent evaporation, whereas incorporation of L-configured poly(L-2-hydroxybutanoic acid) (L-P2HB) in D-configured D-PLA and D-P2H3MB induced co-crystallization or ternary stereocomplex formation between D-configured D-PLA and D-P2H3MB and L-configured L-P2HB. However, incorporation of D-configured poly(D-2-hydroxybutanoic acid) (D-P2HB) in D-configured D-PLA and D-P2H3MB did not cause co-crystallization between D-configured D-PLA and D-P2H3MB and D-configured D-P2HB but separate crystallization of each polymer occurred. These findings strongly suggest that an optically active polymer (L-configured or D-configured polymer) like unsubstituted or substituted optically active poly(lactic acid)s can act as "a configurational or helical molecular glue" for two oppositely configured optically active polymers (two D-configured polymers or two L-configured polymers) to allow their co-crystallization. The increased degree of freedom in polymer combination is expected to assist to pave the way for designing polymeric composites having a wide variety of physical properties, biodegradation rate and behavior in the case of biodegradable polymers.

Bioinspired gradient materials via blending of polymer electrolytes and applying electric forces.

Project description:Free-standing and supported films with a lateral gradient in composition were prepared using blends of poly(acrylic acid) (PAA)/sodium salt and its copolymers with acrylamide (AAm) in an applied electric field. The gradients were stabilized by complexation of carboxylate groups with metal species. To find the favorable conditions and components for successful blending and interaction with Fe and Ce species, we studied blending of the two PAA samples with molecular weights of 2000 and 15 000 Da with two copolymers of AA and AAm (with 10 and 70 wt % of AA units) and interaction of these blends with Fe(III) and Ce(IV) ions. The structure of the hybrid (blend) films was studied using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), UV-vis spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and optical microscopy. To ensure blend miscibility and efficient interaction with metal ions, the copolymer containing 70 wt % AA units has been used. The surface enrichment with metal species was observed at all experimental conditions studied in this work. For lateral gradient film formation, 15 000 Da PAA has been used to avoid uneven distribution of the homopolymer in the film, observed for 2000 Da PAA. The gradient films were characterized by XPS. The lateral gradient of functionality such as COONa group or Fe content has been obtained at different strengths of electric field applied during film formation. The use of lower voltage allows one to prevent NaOH formation and creates more favorable conditions for development of a gradient polymer film. The Ce content gradient was not observed due to formation of large Ce oxide particles (> or = 750 nm), masking the gradient of functionality. For the first time, free-standing films with a lateral gradient in composition were prepared using an applied electric field.

Highly stretchable and self-healable polymer gels from physical entanglements of ultrahigh-molecular weight polymers.

Project description:Highly stretchable and self-healing polymer gels formed solely by physical entanglements of ultrahigh-molecular weight (UHMW) polymers were fabricated through a facile one-step process. Radical polymerization of vinyl monomers in ionic liquids under very low initiator concentration conditions produced UHMW polymers of more than 106 g/mol with nearly 100% yield, resulting in the formation of physically entangled transparent polymer gels. The UHMW gels showed excellent properties, such as high stretchability, high ionic conductivity, and recyclability. Furthermore, the UHMW gel exhibited room temperature self-healing ability without any external stimuli. The tensile experiments and molecular dynamics simulations indicate that the nonequilibrium state of the fractured surfaces and microscopic interactions between the polymer chains and solvents play a vital role in the self-healing ability. This study provides a physical approach for fabricating stretchable and self-healing polymer gels based on UHMW polymers.
