Cocaine, a potent stimulant of the central nervous system, owes its reinforcing and stimulant properties to its ability to inhibit monoamine uptake systems such as the Dopamine Transporter (DAT), and the Serotonin Transporter (SERT) located on presynaptic neurons in the striatum.
