1,4-Diazo-niabicyclo-[2.2.2]octane hexa-aqua-magnesium bis-(sulfate).

ABSTRACT: In the title compound, (C(6)H(14)N(2))[Mg(H(2)O)(6)](SO(4))(2), the Mg(II) ion, lying on an inversion center, is coordinated by six water mol-ecules in a slightly distorted octa-hedral geometry. The 1,4-diazo-niabicyclo-[2.2.2]octane cation is located about a twofold rotation axis. Inter-molecular N-H⋯O and O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds link the cations and the anions into a three-dimensional network.

Project description:The title double mol-ecular salt, (C(6)H(14)N(2))[Cd(H(2)O)(6)](SO(4))(2), is an isostructure of its Mn and Co analogues. The Cd(II) atom adopts a near-regular CdO(6) octa-hedral coordination geometry. The crystal structure can be described as an alternation of cationic and anionic layers along [010], and numerous O-H⋯O and N-H⋯O hydrogen bonds are observed. No thermal anomalies corresponding to possible phase transitions were observed in DSC (differential scanning calorimetry) measurements and the 93 K structure is almost the same as the room-temperature structure.

In the crystal structure, the cation and anions are linked into a trimeric aggregate by inter-molecular N-H⋯O hydrogen bonds. The trimeric units are further connected by π-π inter-actions [centroid-centroid distances = 3.507 (2)-3.660 (3) Å], forming layers parallel to the bc plane.

The carboxyl-ate groups of the 2-chloro-benzoate anions form dihedral angles of 66.1 (1) and 76.1 (1)° with the respective chloro-benzene rings to which they are bound. The dication has mm2 symmetry with two bonded C atoms and the two N atoms located on a crystallographic mirror plane parallel to bc, and with a mirror plane parallel to ab passing through the mid points of the three C-C bonds. In the square-planar Cl(4)I(-) anion, two Cl atoms and the I atom are located on the mm2 axis; the other two Cl atoms are disordered over two postions of equal occupancy (0.25) across the mirror parallel to the ab plane. The Cl(-) anion is located on the mm2 axis. The crystal structure is stabilized by inter-molecular N-H⋯Cl hydrogen bonds.
