Practical synthesis of indoles and benzofurans in water using a heterogeneous bimetallic catalyst.

ABSTRACT: This paper describes the preparation of indoles, azaindoles and benzofurans in pure water by using a new heterogeneous Pd-Cu/C catalyst through a cascade Sonogashira alkynylation-cyclization sequence. Details of the optimization studies and the substrate scope are discussed. This procedure allows the preparation of heterocycles with good yields and is tolerant to a wide variety of functional groups.

A sustainable avenue for the synthesis of propargylamines and benzofurans using a Cu-functionalized MIL-101(Cr) as a reusable heterogeneous catalyst.

Project description:A heterogeneous copper-catalyzed A3 coupling reaction of aldehydes, amines, and alkynes for the synthesis of propargylamines and benzofurans has been developed. Here, the modified metal-organic framework MIL-101(Cr)-SB-Cu complex was chosen as the heterogeneous copper catalyst and prepared via post-synthetic modification of amino-functionalized MIL-101(Cr). The structure, morphology, thermal stability, and copper content of the catalyst were determined by FT-IR, PXRD, SEM, TEM, EDX, TGA, XPS, and ICP-OES. The catalyst shows high catalytic activity for the aforementioned reactions under solvent-free reaction conditions. High yields, low catalyst loading, easy catalyst recovery and reusability with not much shrink in catalytic activity, and a good yield of 82% in gram-scale synthesis are some of the benefits of this protocol that drove it towards sustainability.

Synthesis of Indoles and Benzofurans Using a Graphene Oxide-Grafted Aminobisphosphine-Pd<sup>II</sup> Complex.

Project description:Indoles and benzofurans have been synthesized using a graphene oxide-grafted aminobisphosphine-PdII complex (GO@PNP-Pd) under copper-free condition. A range of indole and benzofuran derivatives have been made by the reaction of N-protected 2-iodoanilines and 2-iodophenols with terminal acetylenes in presence of GO@PNP-Pd. The activity of the aminobisphosphine-PdII complex remains the same under both homogeneous and heterogeneous conditions. Finally, the recycling ability of the immobilized catalyst (GO@PNP-Pd) has been examined for five consecutive runs with appreciable conversion.

Mechanistic Study of Isotactic Poly(propylene oxide) Synthesis using a Tethered Bimetallic Chromium Salen Catalyst.

Project description:Initial catalyst dormancy has been mitigated for the enantioselective polymerization of propylene oxide using a tethered bimetallic chromium(III) salen complex. A detailed mechanistic study provided insight into the species responsible for this induction period and guided efforts to remove them. High-resolution electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry and density functional theory computations revealed that a μ-hydroxide and a bridged 1,2-hydroxypropanolate complex are present during the induction period. Kinetic studies and additional computation indicated that the μ-hydroxide complex is a short-lived catalyst arrest state, where hydroxide dissociation from one metal allows for epoxide enchainment to form the 1,2-hydroxypropanolate arrest state. While investigating anion dependence on the induction period, it became apparent that catalyst activation was the main contributor for dormancy. Using a 1,2-diol or water as chain transfer agents (CTAs) led to longer induction periods as a result of increased 1,2-hydroxyalkanolate complex formation. With a minor catalyst modification, rigorous drying conditions, and avoiding 1,2-diols as CTAs, the induction period was essentially removed.

Multicomponent synthesis of dispiroheterocycles using a magnetically separable and reusable heterogeneous catalyst.

Project description:Dispiroheterocycles have been synthesized by pseudo-four component reaction of 6-aminouracil/6-amino-2-thiouracil/2-amino-1,3,4-thiadiazole, p-toluidine and isatins in an ethanol-water mixture as solvent using β-cyclodextrin functionalized Fe3O4 nanoparticles as a magnetically separable and reusable heterogeneous catalyst. The nanocatalyst was synthesized and characterized by physicochemical characterization including Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and X-ray diffraction (XRD).

Pd/C-mediated synthesis of indoles in water.

Project description:We describe the utility of a Pd/C-Cu mediated method in the synthesis of 2,5-disubstituted indoles in water via a coupling-cyclization strategy. Further application of this methodology has been demonstrated in the preparation of a target indole derivative via a 7-step process the key step being the Pd/C-mediated coupling reaction.

Self-Assembled Bimetallic Aluminum-Salen Catalyst for the Cyclic Carbonates Synthesis.

Project description:Bimetallic bis-urea functionalized salen-aluminum catalysts have been developed for cyclic carbonate synthesis from epoxides and CO2. The urea moiety provides a bimetallic scaffold through hydrogen bonding, which expedites the cyclic carbonate formation reaction under mild reaction conditions. The turnover frequency (TOF) of the bis-urea salen Al catalyst is three times higher than that of a μ-oxo-bridged catalyst, and 13 times higher than that of a monomeric salen aluminum catalyst. The bimetallic reaction pathway is suggested based on urea additive studies and kinetic studies. Additionally, the X-ray crystal structure of a bis-urea salen Ni complex supports the self-assembly of the bis-urea salen metal complex through hydrogen bonding.

Cascade Synthesis of Pyrroles from Nitroarenes with Benign Reductants Using a Heterogeneous Cobalt Catalyst.

Project description:A bifunctional 3d-metal catalyst for the cascade synthesis of diverse pyrroles from nitroarenes is presented. The optimal catalytic system Co/NGr-C@SiO2 -L is obtained by pyrolysis of a cobalt-impregnated composite followed by subsequent selective leaching. In the presence of this material, (transfer) hydrogenation of easily available nitroarenes and subsequent Paal-Knorr/Clauson-Kass condensation provides >40 pyrroles in good to high yields using dihydrogen, formic acid, or a CO/H2 O mixture (WGSR conditions) as reductant. In addition to the favorable step economy, this straightforward domino process does not require any solvents or external co-catalysts. The general synthetic utility of this methodology was demonstrated on a variety of functionalized substrates including the preparation of biologically active and pharmaceutically relevant compounds, for example, (+)-Isamoltane.

Overcoming immiscibility toward bimetallic catalyst library.

Project description:Bimetallics are emerging as important materials that often exhibit distinct chemical properties from monometallics. However, there is limited access to homogeneously alloyed bimetallics because of the thermodynamic immiscibility of the constituent elements. Overcoming the inherent immiscibility in bimetallic systems would create a bimetallic library with unique properties. Here, we present a nonequilibrium synthesis strategy to address the immiscibility challenge in bimetallics. As a proof of concept, we synthesize a broad range of homogeneously alloyed Cu-based bimetallic nanoparticles regardless of the thermodynamic immiscibility. The nonequilibrated bimetallic nanoparticles are further investigated as electrocatalysts for carbon monoxide reduction at commercially relevant current densities (>100 mA cm-2), in which Cu0.9Ni0.1 shows the highest multicarbon product Faradaic efficiency of ~76% with a current density of ~93 mA cm-2. The ability to overcome thermodynamic immiscibility in multimetallic synthesis offers freedom to design and synthesize new functional nanomaterials with desired chemical compositions and catalytic properties.

Heterogeneous catalytic hydrogenation of unprotected indoles in water: a green solution to a long-standing challenge.

Project description:An environmentally benign procedure for the hydrogenation of unprotected indoles is described. The hydrogenation reaction is catalyzed by Pt/C and activated by p-toluenesulfonic acid in water as a solvent. The efficacy of the method is illustrated by the hydrogenation of a variety of substituted indoles to their corresponding indolines which were obtained in excellent yields.
