Fluorinated graphene oxide; a new multimodal material for biological applications.

ABSTRACT: Fluorinated graphene oxide (FGO) is reported for the first time as a magnetically responsive drug carrier that can serve both as a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and photoacoustic contrast agent, under preclinical settings, and as a type of photothermal therapy. Its hydrophilic nature facilitates biocompatibility. FGO as a broad wavelength absorber, with high charge transfer and strong non-linear scattering is optimal for NIR laser-induced hyperthermia.

Synthesis of double-clickable functionalised graphene oxide for biological applications.

Project description:Azide- and alkyne-double functionalised graphene oxide (Click(2) GO) was synthesised and characterised with attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and Raman spectroscopy. Fourteen-percentage increase in azide content was found, after pre-treatment of GO with meta-chloroperoxybenzoic acid (mCPBA), determined with elemental analysis. No effect on A549 cell viability was found, up to 100 ?g mL(-1) and 72 h of incubation, determined with the modified lactate dehydrogenase (mLDH) assay. Two sequential copper(i) catalysed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) reactions were performed to conjugate the propargyl-modified blood-brain barrier targeting peptide Angiopep-2, and a bis-azide polyethylene glycol (MW = 3500), to the Click(2) GO. The final conjugate was characterised with ATR-FTIR and TGA.

Hydrogenated-Graphene-Encapsulated Graphene: A Versatile Material for Device Applications.

Project description:Graphene and its heterostructures exhibit interesting electronic properties and are explored for quantum spin Hall effect (QSHE) and magnetism-based device applications. In present work, we propose a heterostructure of graphene encapsulated by hydrogenated-graphene, which could be a promising candidate for a variety of device applications. We have carried out DFT calculations on this system to check its feasibility to be a versatile material. We found that electronic states of multilayer pristine graphene, especially the Dirac cone, an important feature to host QSHE, can be preserved by sandwiching it by fully hydrogenated graphene. The interference of electronic states of hydrogenated graphene was insignificant with those of graphene. States of graphene were also found to be stable upon application of an electric field up to ±2.5 V/nm. For device applications, multilayer graphene or its heterostructures are required to be deposited on a substrate, which interacts with the system opening up a gap at the Dirac cone making it less suitable for QSHE applications, and hydrogenated graphene can prevent it. Magnetization in these hydrogenated-graphene-sandwiched graphene systems may be induced by creating vacancies or distortions in hydrogenated graphene, which was found to have a minimal effect on graphene's electronic states, thus providing an additional degree of manipulation. We also performed a set of calculations to explore its applicability for detecting some molecules. Our results on trilayer graphene encapsulated by hydrogenated graphene indicate that all these observations can be generalized for systems with a larger number of graphene layers, indicating that multilayer graphene sandwiched between two hydrogenated graphene is a versatile material that can be used in QSHE and sensor devices.

Fluorinated graphene as high performance dielectric materials and the applications for graphene nanoelectronics.

Project description:There is broad interest in surface functionalization of 2D materials and its related applications. In this work, we present a novel graphene layer transistor fabricated by introducing fluorinated graphene (fluorographene), one of the thinnest 2D insulator, as the gate dielectric material. For the first time, the dielectric properties of fluorographene, including its dielectric constant, frequency dispersion, breakdown electric field and thermal stability, were comprehensively investigated. We found that fluorographene with extremely thin thickness (5 nm) can sustain high resistance at temperature up to 400 °C. The measured breakdown electric field is higher than 10 MV cm(-1), which is the heightest value for dielectric materials in this thickness. Moreover, a proof-of-concept methodology, one-step fluorination of 10-layered graphene, is readily to obtain the fluorographene/graphene heterostructures, where the top-gated transistor based on this structure exhibits an average carrier mobility above 760 cm(2)/Vs, higher than that obtained when SiO? and GO were used as gate dielectric materials. The demonstrated fluorographene shows excellent dielectric properties with fast and scalable processing, providing a universal applications for the integration of versatile nano-electronic devices.

N-Doped graphene/C60 covalent hybrid as a new material for energy harvesting applications.

Project description:N-Doped graphene (N-G) was chemically functionalized by N-alkylation with the well-known electron acceptor C60. The degree of functionalization and the key structural features of the N-G/C60 hybrid were systematically investigated by a number of techniques including thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray photoelectron and Raman spectroscopies and transmission electron and atomic force microscopies. Absorption and electrochemical studies revealed interactions between the N-G and C60 while the fluorescence of C60 within the hybrid was found to be fully quenched. Evidence for the occurrence of excited state charge transfer from the singlet excited C60 to N-G in the hybrid was obtained from femtosecond transient absorption studies covering the visible-near-IR regions. Electron-pooling experiments performed in the presence of a sacrificial electron donor and a second electron acceptor, methyl viologen, revealed the accumulation of the one-electron reduced product of methyl viologen upon continuous irradiation of the N-G/C60 nanohybrid, thus revealing the utility of this material in photocatalytic energy harvesting applications.

Tris-(2-aminoethyl)amine-Intercalated Graphene Oxide as an Efficient 2D Material for Cerium-Ion Fluorescent Sensor Applications.

Project description:In this work, we report the covalent functionalization of tris(2-aminoethyl)amine (tren) onto the graphene oxide surface by the ring opening of epoxide with primary amine moieties. The effect of intercalation creates the covalent coordinating moieties in between the basal planes of graphene oxide by increasing the interlayer spacing of 1.08 nm from 0.75 nm and thereby decreasing 2? of 8.17 deg from 10.46 deg. Because of the intercalation of tren, the aminoalcohol moieties are formed in the GO planes and the intercalated material is characterized by the spectroscopic (IR, XPS, UV, and Fluorescence) and microscopic techniques. The DFT calculation shows the newly formed C-N bond length of 1.484 Å and enhanced energy gap due to functionalization. The intercalated material shows a good selective fluorescent chemosensor for the cerium ion in aqueous solution. The reversibility and its interference with other competing metal ions have been studied. The enhanced fluorescence upon the addition of cerium ions is due to the intramolecular charge transfer and photoinduced electron transfer processes in the sp2- and sp3-hybridized carbon networks.

Nitrated Graphene Oxide Derived from Graphite Oxide: A Promising Energetic Two-Dimensional Material.

Project description:In order to synthesize a novel two-dimensional energetic material, nitrated graphene oxide (NGO) was prepared by the nitrification of graphite oxide to make a functional modification. Based on the morphological characterization, the NGO has a greater degree of curl and more wrinkles on the surface. The structure characterization and density functional theory calculation prove that epoxy and hydroxyl groups on the edge of graphite oxide have reacted with nitronium cation (NO2+) to produce nitro and nitrate groups. Hydrophobicity of NGO implied higher stability in storage than graphene oxide. Synchronous simultaneous analysis was used to explore the decomposition mechanism of NGO preliminarily. The decomposition enthalpy of NGO is 662.0 J·g-1 and the activation energy is 166.5 kJ·mol-1. The thermal stability is similar to that of general nitrate energetic materials. The hygroscopicity, thermal stability and flammability of NGO prove that it is a novel two-dimensional material with potential applications as energetic additives in the catalyst, electrode materials and energetic devices.

New Methylene Blue Covalently Functionalized Graphene Oxide Nanocomposite as Interfacial Material for the Electroanalysis of Hydrogen Peroxide.

Project description:New methylene blue (NMB), a phenothiazine dye, was covalently bonded to graphene oxide (GO) using glutaraldehyde as a crosslinking agent, which was characterized by spectroscopic techniques and electrochemistry. The obtained GO-NMB nanocomposite was used as interface material to construct a novel electrochemical sensor for the determination of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). The electrochemical sensor based on GO-NMB nanocomposite exhibited excellent electrocatalytic activity for the reduction of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), which was also enhanced by GO within the GO-NMB nanocomposite. With the optimized experimental conditions, the developed sensor showed high sensitivity (79.4 μA mM-1 cm-2) for electrocatalytic determination of H2O2 at the applied potential of -0.50 V in the concentration range of 0.000333 to 2.28 mΜ. The low limit of detection (1.35 μM), good reproducibility, and high stability of the sensor suggests that the electrochemical sensor based on the GO-NMB nanocomposite possesses obvious advantages, which paves a new avenue to functionalize GO for obtaining electrode interface materials.

Co2TiO4/Reduced Graphene Oxide Nanohybrids for Electrochemical Sensing Applications.

Project description:For the first time, the synthesis, characterization, and analytical application for hydrogen peroxide quantification of the hybrid materials of Co2TiO4 (CTO) and reduced graphene oxide (RGO) is reported, using in situ (CTO/RGO) and ex situ (CTO+RGO) preparations. This synthesis for obtaining nanostructured CTO is based on a one-step hydrothermal synthesis, with new precursors and low temperatures. The morphology, structure, and composition of the synthesized materials were examined using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), neutron powder diffraction (NPD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Rietveld refinements using neutron diffraction data were conducted to determine the cation distributions in CTO. Hybrid materials were also characterized by Brunauer-Emmett-Teller adsorption isotherms, Scanning Electron microscopy, and scanning electrochemical microscopy. From an analytical point of view, we evaluated the electrochemical reduction of hydrogen peroxide on glassy carbon electrodes modified with hybrid materials. The analytical detection of hydrogen peroxide using CTO/RGO showed 11 and 5 times greater sensitivity in the detection of hydrogen peroxide compared with that of pristine CTO and RGO, respectively, and a two-fold increase compared with that of the RGO+CTO modified electrode. These results demonstrate that there is a synergistic effect between CTO and RGO that is more significant when the hybrid is synthetized through in situ methodology.

Patterning Perfluorinated Surface with Graphene Oxide and the Microarray Applications.

Project description:A method was developed to pattern the surface of perfluorinated materials with graphene oxide thin film, and various biological applications of the patterned perfluorinated surface were illustrated. Perfluorinated surfaces such as Teflon, Cytop, and other perfluorinated materials are known to be both hydrophobic and oleophobic, with low adhesion for most materials. Modifying the perfluorinated surfaces has been difficult due to the extraordinary chemical inertness, which limits the applications of perfluorinated materials as anti-fouling substrates. Herein we successfully patterned Cytop surfaces with graphene oxide. Patterns of the graphene oxide thin film with feature dimension down to 40 microns were formed and remained stable on the Cytop surface against washing with water, ethanol and acetone. The graphene oxide thin film on the Cytop surface allowed non-specific protein adsorption. To illustrate the applications of the patterned Cytop surface, we used the patterned Cytop surface as the substrate to study the protein-protein interactions, stem cell culture, and stem cell proliferation.

Graphene Oxide-Chitosan Composite Material for Treatment of a Model Dye Effluent.

Project description:Graphene oxide (GO) was cross-linked with chitosan to yield a composite (GO-LCTS) with variable morphology, enhanced surface area, and notably high methylene blue (MB) adsorption capacity. The materials were structurally characterized using thermogravimetric analysis and spectroscopic methods (X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and 13C solid-state NMR) to support that cross-linking occurs between the amine groups of chitosan and the -COOH groups of GO. Equilibrium swelling studies provide support for the enhanced structural stability of GO-cross-linked materials over the synthetic precursors. Scanning electron microscopy studies reveal the enhanced surface area and variable morphology of the cross-linked GO materials, along with equilibrium and kinetic uptake results with MB dye in aqueous media, revealing greater uptake of GO-LCTS composites over pristine GO. The monolayer uptake capacity (Q m; mg g-1) with MB reveals twofold variation for Q m, where GO-LCTS (402.6 mg g-1) > GO (286.9 mg g-1). The kinetic uptake profiles of MB follow a pseudo-second-order trend, where the GO composite shows more rapid uptake over GO. This study reveals that the sorption properties of GO are markedly improved upon formation of a GO-chitosan composite. The facile cross-linking strategy of GO reveals that its physicochemical properties are tunable and versatile for a wider field of application for contaminant removal, especially over multiple adsorption-desorption cycles when compared against pristine GO in its highly dispersed nanoparticle form.
