Reliability and validity of the Polish version of the Core Outcome Measures Index for the neck.

ABSTRACT: Purpose
Patient reported outcome measures play an increasingly important role in the outcomes research. The Core Outcome Measures Index (COMI) is a short, multidimensional instrument initially developed for the use by patients with low back pain. This study is an evaluation of a Polish version of COMI adapted for neck pain.Methods
One hundred twenty-three patients complaining of neck pain were enrolled. All of them completed a questionnaire booklet containing COMI-neck, Neck Disability Index and Likert-type questions regarding the frequency of use of pain medications and pain frequency. Ninety-eight patients returned the retest questionnaire. Data quality was also assessed. Assessment of psychometric properties included examination of data quality, construct validity, test-retest reliability and factor analysis.Results
The quality of data was good with no missing answers and a little floor effect. Exploratory factor analysis revealed a single-factor structure. Reliability expressed as intraclass correlation coefficient was 0.88 (95% CI 0.84-0.92) for the overall COMI score and was generally good for most of individual core items. The minimum detectable change (MDC95%) was 1.97.Conclusion
This version of the COMI-neck is a valid and reliable instrument, with good psychometric properties. It can be recommended for Polish-speaking patients.

Project description:PurposeTo conduct a cross-cultural adaptation of the Core Outcome Measures Index (COMI) into French according to established guidelines.MethodsSeventy outpatients with chronic low back pain were recruited from six spine centres in Switzerland and France. They completed the newly translated COMI, and the Roland Morris disability (RMQ), Dallas Pain (DPQ), adjectival pain rating scale, WHO Quality of Life, and EuroQoL-5D questionnaires. After ~14 days RMQ and COMI were completed again to assess reproducibility; a transition question (7-point Likert scale; "very much worse" through "no change" to "very much better") indicated any change in status since the first questionnaire.ResultsCOMI whole scores displayed no floor effects and just 1.5% ceiling effects. The scores for the individual COMI items correlated with their corresponding full-length reference questionnaire with varying strengths of correlation (0.33-0.84, P < 0.05). COMI whole scores showed a very good correlation with the "multidimensional" DPQ global score (Rho = 0.71). 55 patients (79%) returned a second questionnaire with no/minimal change in their back status. The reproducibility of individual COMI 5-point items was good, with test-retest differences within one grade ranging from 89% for 'social/work disability' to 98% for 'symptom-specific well-being'. The intraclass correlation coefficient for the COMI whole score was 0.85 (95% CI 0.76-0.91).ConclusionsIn conclusion, the French version of this short, multidimensional questionnaire showed good psychometric properties, comparable to those reported for German and Spanish versions. The French COMI represents a valuable tool for future multicentre clinical studies and surgical registries (e.g. SSE Spine Tango) in French-speaking countries.

Project description:PurposeThe core outcome measures index (COMI) is a short, multidimensional outcome scale validated for the use by patients with spinal disorders. It is a recommended instrument in the Spine Society of Europe Spine Tango Registry. The purpose of this study was to produce a cross-culturally adapted and validated Polish COMI.MethodsThe cross-cultural adaptation was carried out using the established guidelines. One-hundred and sixty-nine patients with chronic low back pain were enrolled, 89 took part in the reproducibility part of the study. Data quality, construct validity and reproducibility were assessed.ResultsThe quality of data was very good with very few missing answers and modest floor effect. Reliability expressed as intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) was 0.90 (95 % CI 0.85-0.93) for the overall COMI score and for most of the individual core items. The minimum detectable change (MDC95%) was 1.79.ConclusionsThe Polish version of COMI showed a favorable reproducibility similar to that of previously tested language versions. The COMI scores correlated sufficiently with existing measures. This version of the COMI is a valuable instrument for the use by Polish-speaking patients with spinal disorders.

Project description:PurposeTo translate the Core Outcome Measures Index (COMI) into Simplified Chinese and then validate it for Mainland Chinese patients with low back pain (LBP).MethodsA total of 120 consecutive patients with LBP >3 months who visited our outpatient clinic from December 2011 to March 2012 were asked to complete a questionnaire booklet including the following: (1) the Roland Morris disability questionnaire (RMQ) (Fan et al. in Spine 37(10):875-880, 2012), (2) the Short Form Health Survey (SF-36) (Zhang et al. in Int J Med Sci 9(7):521-526, 2012), (3) the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) (Liu et al. in Spine 34(11):1211-1216, 2009), (4) visual analogue scale (VAS) measure of pain, and (5) COMI. These patients were also asked to complete a second COMI questionnaire and a transition questionnaire (5-point Likert scale: better, a little better, no change, a little worse, worse) and to return the second COMI questionnaire via mail within 1 month.ResultsThe floor effects for the COMI items ranged from 5.8 to 12.5 %. High values (28.3, 27.5, and 25.8 %, respectively) were found for symptom-specific quality of life, social disability, and work disability. Regarding the ceiling effects, the social and work disabilities were relatively high at 17.5 and 24.2 %, respectively. For other items, the values ranged from 0 to 14.2 %. Neither floor nor ceiling effects were found for the COMI summary score. Excellent correlations were found between the COMI pain scores and VAS scores (Rho = 0.89) and between the COMI pain and the SF-36 bodily pain domain (Rho = 0.84). Other individual items and summary scores showed a very good correlation (Rho = 0.54-0.72) with the corresponding questionnaires except for "symptom-specific well-being" (0.31-0.45). One-way repeated measures ANOVA was used to determine the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). The ICC for the entire COMI score was 0.91 (95 % CI 0.85-0.94) and 0.81-0.86 for the two pain scores (back and leg). The "minimum detectable change'' (MDC 95 %) for the COMI summary score was 1.91 points. No significant difference in the mean values was found for the repeated scores of individual items or the summary score.ConclusionThe Simplified Chinese version of COMI showed satisfactory reliability and good psychometric properties. This concise questionnaire is suitable for widespread use in Mainland China.

Project description:STUDY DESIGN:Cross-cultural adaptation and psychometric evaluation. OBJECTIVE:The aim of this study was to translate the Neck Disability Index (NDI) into the simplified-Chinese language and to evaluate the reliability, validity, and responsiveness of the new questionnaire. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA:Neck pain is a major health problem resulting in major disability. NDI is the most frequently used scale for self-rating of disability due to neck pain. At present, there is no simplified-Chinese version of the NDI. The aims of this study were to culturally adapt and translate the NDI into the simplified-Chinese language (NDI-SC) and to evaluate its psychometric properties in patients with neck pain. METHODS:The NDI was translated into simplified-Chinese version based on established guidelines. A total of 70 patients participated in this study. Patients were asked to complete a set of questionnaires comprising of their demographic information, the NDI-SC, and a visual analog scale (VAS) of pain. Fifty-six patients returned after 1 to 2 weeks to complete the same set of questionnaires and the global rating of change (GROC) scale. Then, the NDI-SC was evaluated for content validity, construct validity, internal consistency, test-retest reliability, and responsiveness. RESULTS:The NDI-SC demonstrated excellent internal consistency (Cronbach ??=?0.92) and good test-retest reliability (ICC2,1?=?0.85). Content validity was confirmed as no floor or ceiling effects were detected for the NDI-SC total score. Construct validity was established with factor analysis revealing two-factor subscales explaining 66% of the variance. The NDI-SC showed a strong correlation with VAS (Rp?=?0.61, P?<?0.001) and a moderate correlation with GROC (Rs?=?0.46, P?<?0.001). The correlation between NDI-SC change scores and VAS change scores was also moderate (Rp?=?0.59, P?<?0.001). CONCLUSION:The results showed that the NDI-SC is a reliable, valid, and responsive instrument to measure functional limitations in patients with neck pain. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE:3.

Project description:BackgroundThe comprehensive counseling of patients with olfactory dysfunctions requires accurate diagnosis. The recommendations include subjective assessment. The Questionnaire of Olfactory Disorders (QOD) is a disease-specific questionnaire for the subjective evaluation of olfactory dysfunctions.MaterialThe study included 54 patients with olfactory dysfunctions, who were recruited to the study group (SG). The other 47 patients without the history of olfactory dysfunction and nasal cavity pathology were voluntarily allocated to the control group (CG). The protocol of the study was introduced to each patient and included: olfactory testing with Sniffin' Stick test, fulfillment of the Polish version of World Health Organization Quality of Life brief questionnaire and completing of the Polish version of the QOD. All participants (101) were invited for refilling the QOD questionnaire after 2 weeks for the test-retest statistics.ResultsThe Polish QOD statements were significantly correlated and met the requirement by having test-retest correlation larger than 0.7. We found that internal consistency of the test measured by Cronbach's alpha coefficient was very high. The mean scores of the QOD test in normosmic SG patients were compared with corresponding scores in normosmic CG patients using U Mann-Whitney test. The analysis revealed statistically significant differences on mean QOD scores for each domains except QOD-S between both groups.ConclusionsThe Polish version of the QOD demonstrated high rate of the validity and the reliability. This instrument may be widely used in research projects and clinical practice concerning olfactory disorders in Polish patients.Level of evidenceNA.

Project description:This study evaluated the reliability and validity of a Japanese version of Pain Disability Index (PDI). Analyses were conducted on a 7-item version (PDI-J) and a 5-item (PDI-5-J version of the PDI). Using a web-based survey system, we recruited 300 individuals with chronic low back pain (lasting ≥3 months) and 300 individuals with chronic daily headache (lasting ≥15 days per month for 3 months) aged 20-64 years. Analyses revealed a one-factor with goodness-of-fit indices assessed by confirmatory factor analysis. For concurrent validity, we calculated Pearson's correlation coefficients among the PDI-J, PDI-5-J, Pain Disability Assessment Scale, Pain numerical rating scale, and revised version of Short-Form McGill Pain Questionnaire. Internal consistency was evaluated by Cronbach's α, and test-retest reliability was assessed with intraclass correlations (ICCs) in 100 of 600 participants a week after the first response. Both Japanese adaptations of the PDI demonstrated good concurrent validity and reliability (Cronbach's α was 0.89 for PDI-J in chronic low back pain or chronic daily headache, and 0.94 and 0.93 for PDI-5-J in chronic low back pain and chronic daily headache, respectively). The PDI-J and PDI-5-J showed were highly correlated (r = 0.98). ICCs were 0.67 and 0.59 for the PDI-J and 0.59 and 0.63 for the PDI-5-J in chronic low back pain and chronic daily headache, respectively. In conclusion, these two PDI versions can be potentially used for evaluating pain-related interference with daily activities among the Japanese general population.

Project description:BackgroundOswestry Disability Index (ODI) is broadly used in clinical and research settings for assessing the disability level in patients with lumbar radiculopathy but it has not been translated into Urdu language according to the pre-established translation guidelines as well as the validity and reliability of ODI Urdu version has not been tested yet. The aim of this study was to translate ODI in native Urdu language (ODI-U) according to recommended guidelines and to measure its psychometric properties in Urdu speaking patients suffering from lumber radiculopathy.MethodsOut of 108 participants, 54 were healthy (who filled ODI-U) and 54 were patients of lumber radiculopathy. The patients were administered through ODI-U, visual analogue scales for disability (VAS disability), pain intensity (VAS pain) and SF-36 at baseline and after 3 days. Reliability was investigated through test-retest method, internal consistency, standard error of measurement (SEM) and smallest detectable change (SDC). ODI-U was assessed for exploratory factor analysis, construct (convergent and discriminative) validity and content validity. Alpha level < 0.05 was considered statistically significant and psychometric standards were evaluated contrary to priori hypothesis.ResultsODI-U revealed excellent test-retest reliability for total score (ICC2,1 = 0.95) and for all item (ICC2,1 = 0.72-0.98). Cronbach's alpha of 0.89 showed excellent internal consistency and moderate correlation between ODI-U total score and each item through spearman's correlation coefficient (r = 0.51-0.76). One factor structure was created, explaining 52.5% variance. There was no floor and ceiling effect of total ODI-U score. Content validity was assessed through conducting interviews with patients and incorporating expert's opinions. The discriminative validity was measured by independent sample t-test, where significant difference between healthy and patients (P < 0.001) was observed. The convergent validity was evaluated through Pearson's correlation showing moderate positive correlation of ODI-U with VAS pain (r = 0.49) and VAS disability (r = 0.51) but moderate negative correlation with all SF-36 domains (r = - 0.43to - 0.63).ConclusionODI-U showed adequate psychometric properties. ODI-U was found to be a reliable and a valid tool to measure the level of disability in Urdu-speaking patients with lumber radiculopathy.

Project description:PURPOSE:The aim of this study was to perform the translation and cross-cultural adaptation of the Achilles tendon Total Rupture Score (ATRS) into Polish version, and to evaluate its reliability and validity. METHODS:The ATRS was translated into Polish language according to the Beaton recommendations. A total number of 71 patients previously treated surgically (from 2011 to 2015), due to the Achilles tendon rupture, were enrolled in this study. ATRS-Polish was performed twice within a period of 5-10 days. To evaluate test-retest reliability, intra-rater coefficient (ICC) was calculated. Construct validity was determined by the Spearman's rank coefficient correlation between the ATRS-Polish and a Polish version of EQ-5D-5L questionnaire. RESULTS:Test-retest reliability was found to be excellent (ICC 0.9). The mean and standard deviation of the first and second assessment amounted 87.4?±?14.0 and 88.4?±?13.2, respectively. Construct validity analysis showed a strong correlation between the ATRS and the EQ-5D-5L score (r?=?- 0.69.) and moderate correlation between ATRS and actual comfort (r?=?0.47). CONCLUSIONS AND PERSPECTIVES:Polish version of the Achilles tendon Total Rupture Score was found to be reliable and valid. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE:Level II.

Project description:This study adapts the Self-Compassion Scale into Polish and tests the validity, reliability and factor structure of its measures. In the first phase of the research (Study I), 645 respondents were assessed using the NEO-FFI Scale, the Self-Esteem Scale and a back-translated version of the Self-Compassion Scale. The aim of Study I is to analyse the factor structure of the Polish adaptation of the Self-Compassion Scale. The results of analyses using structural equation modelling and exploratory structural equation modelling confirm the six-component structure of the Self-Compassion Scale and the possibility of distinguishing a single primary factor. The results of these analyses indicate that self-compassion is conceptually distinctive from personality traits and self-judgement. In the second phase of the study (Study II), 688 respondents were assessed and the findings show that self-compassion is a predictor of depressive symptoms, trait anxiety, and satisfaction with life, and is also linked to emotional intelligence. In conclusion, the findings of this study show that the Polish version of the Self-Compassion Scale is a reliable and valid measure of self-compassion.

Project description:IntroductionSARC-F is a quick questionnaire recommended as a screening tool for sarcopenia. The aim of the study was to translate, adapt, and validate the Polish version of the SARC-F for community-dwelling older adults in Poland.Materials and methodsWe included 160 Polish volunteers aged ≥ 60 years (44% of men). The Polish version of SARC-F was adapted following standardized forward-backward translation procedure. SARC-F was validated against the six sets of diagnostic criteria as the reference standards [developed independently by European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People1 (EWGSOP1), European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People2 (EWGSOP2), Foundation for the National Institutes of Health (FNIH) Sarcopenia Project, Asia Working Group for Sarcopenia (AWGS), the International Working Group for Sarcopenia (IWGS), and Society on Sarcopenia, Cachexia and Wasting Disorders (SCWD)].ResultsSARC-F score ≥ 4 points was observed in 18.8% of the study population. Cronbach's alpha was 0.70. The sensitivity of SARC-F varied from 33.3% to 50.0% depending on the diagnostics criteria used, while the specificity was about 85%. Positive predictive value (PPV) was low (about 30%) for five out of six sets of the diagnostic criteria used (EWGSOP2, IWGS, AWGS, FNIH, and SCWD), while the negative predictive value (NPV) was generally high (>88%). The area under the ROC curves (AUC) was 0.652-0.728. SARC-F had the largest AUC against FNIH criteria (0.728), indicating a moderate diagnostic accuracy. Similar results were found for EWGSOP2 and IWGS criteria. The AUC values were below 0.7 for AWGS, SCWD, and EWGSOP1 criteria.ConclusionBased on the results, the Polish version of SARC-F shows excellent reliability and good internal consistency. High specificity and high NPV make SARC-F a useful tool to rule-out sarcopenia with high accuracy in community-dwelling older adults, independently of the diagnostic criteria used.
