The electronic structures of pyridine N-heterocyclic dicarbene (<sup>iPr</sup>CNC) iron complexes have been studied by a combination of spectroscopic and computational methods. The goal of these studies was to determine if this chelate engages in radical chemistry in reduced base metal compounds.
