Translocation of mRNA and tRNAs through the ribosome is catalyzed by a universally conserved elongation factor (EF-G in prokaryotes and EF-2 in eukaryotes). Previous studies have suggested that ribosome-bound EF-G undergoes significant structural rearrangements.
