Crystal structure of N-[(E)-(1,3-benzodioxol-5-yl)-methyl-idene]-4-chloro-aniline.

ABSTRACT: In the title compound, C14H10ClNO2, obtained by the condensation of 4-chloro-aniline and piperonal, the five-membered ring is almost planar (r.m.s. deviation = 0.023?Å) and the dihedral angle between the aromatic rings is 43.22?(14)°. In the crystal, a short O?Cl contact of 3.173?(2)?Å is observed. The mol-ecules are arranged into corrugated (010) layers.

Project description:The two symmetry-independent mol-ecules in the asymmetric unit of the title compound, C(15)H(13)NO(2), differ in conformation, with the virtually planar 4-methyl-aniline (r.m.s. deviations of 0.0511 and 0.0082?Å) and piperonal groups (r.m.s. deviations of 0.0241 and 0.0486?Å) forming dihedral angles of 19.40?(5) and 42.90?(6)°. In the crystal, mol-ecules are linked by C-H?O and C-H?? inter-actions. The H atoms of the two methyl groups are disordered over two sets of sites of equal occupancy.

In the crystal, the mol-ecules associate via C-H?O inter-actions, involving both carbonyl-O atoms, giving rise to an undulating two-dimensional array in the ac plane.

The (1,3-benzodioxol-5-yl)methyl-idene fused-ring system is approximately planar (r.m.s. deviation = 0.020?Å) and is essentially coplanar with the central hydrazine group [dihedral angle = 5.08?(9)°]. Weak ?-? inter-molecular inter-actions are observed [centroid-centroid distance = 3.8553?(8)?Å], providing some packing stability.

Project description:The title compound, C20H17ClN2O2S, was obtained by a condensation reaction between 4-chloro-benzo-phenone and tosyl hydrazide. The plane of the methyl-substituted benzene ring forms dihedral angles of 20.12 (12) and 78.43 (13)° with those of the chlorine-substituted benzene ring and the benzene ring, respectively, with the last two rings forming a dihedral angle of 67.81 (13)°. The chlorine substituent was also found to be 0.868 (2):0.132 (2) disordered over these two rings. In the crystal, mol-ecules are linked through pairs of N-H⋯O hydrogen bonds, giving centrosymmetric cyclic dimers [graph set R 2 (2)(8)], which are linked by weak C-H⋯O and C-H⋯Cl inter-actions into a chain structure which extends along the a-axis direction.
