Dynamic graphene filters for selective gas-water-oil separation.

ABSTRACT: Selective filtration of gas, water, and liquid or gaseous oil is essential to prevent possible environmental pollution and machine/facility malfunction in oil-based industries. Novel materials and structures able to selectively and efficiently filter liquid and vapor in various types of solutions are therefore in continuous demand. Here, we investigate selective gas-water-oil filtration using three-dimensional graphene structures. The proposed approach is based on the adjustable wettability of three-dimensional graphene foams. Three such structures are developed in this study; the first allows gas, oil, and water to pass, the second blocks water only, and the third is exclusively permeable to gas. In addition, the ability of three-dimensional graphene structures with a self-assembled monolayer to selectively filter oil is demonstrated. This methodology has numerous potential practical applications as gas, water, and/or oil filtration is an essential component of many industries.

Selective solvent filters for non-aqueous phase liquid separation from water.

Project description:Injectable filters permeable to water but impermeable to non-polar solvents were developed to contain non-aqueous phase liquids (NAPL) in contaminated aquifers, hence protecting downstream receptors during NAPL remediation. Filters were produced by injecting aqueous solutions of 0.01% chitosan, hydroxyethylcellulose and quaternized hydroxyethylcellulose into sand columns, followed by rinsing with water. Polymer sorption onto silica was verified using a quartz-crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring. Fluorescence and gas chromatography mass spectroscopy showed low ppm range concentrations of non-polar solvents (e.g., hexane and toluene) in water eluted from the filters (in the absence of emulsifiers). The contact angles between polymer-coated surfaces and hexane or toluene were > 90°, indicating surface oleophobicity. Organic, polar solvents (e.g. tetrahydrofuran and tetrachloroethylene, TCE) were not separated from water. The contact angles between polymer-coated surfaces and TCE was also > 90°. However, the contact area with polymer coated surfaces was greater for TCE than non-polar solvents, suggesting higher affinity between TCE and the surfaces. Emulsifiers can be used to facilitate NAPL extraction from aquifers. Emulsion separation efficiency depended on the emulsifier used. Emulsions were not separated with classical surfactants (e.g. Tween 20 and oleic acid) or alkaline zein solutions. Partial emulsion separation was achieved with humic acids and zein particles.

Bioinspired Diatomite Membrane with Selective Superwettability for Oil/Water Separation.

Project description:Membranes with selective superwettability for oil/water separation have received significant attention during the past decades. Hierarchical structures and surface roughness are believed to improve the oil repellency and the stability of Cassie-Baxter state. Diatoms, unicellular photosynthetic algae, possess sophisticated skeletal shells (called frustules) which are made of hydrated silica. Motivated by the hierarchical micro- and nanoscale features of diatom, we fabricate a hierarchical diatomite membrane which consists of aligned micro-sized channels by the freeze casting process. The fine nano-porous structures of frustules are well preserved after the post sintering process. The bioinspired diatomite membrane performs both underwater superoleophobicity and superhydrophobicity under various oils. Additionally, we demonstrate the highly efficient oil/water separation capabililty of the membranes in various harsh environments. The water flux can be further adjusted by tuning the cooling rates. The eco-friendly and robust bioinspired membranes produced by the simple, cost-effective freeze casting method can be potentially applied for large scale and efficient oil/water separation.

Highly Selective Supported Graphene Oxide Membranes for Water-Ethanol Separation.

Project description:A polyethersulfone (PES)-supported graphene oxide (GO) membrane has been developed by a simple casting approach. This stable membrane is applied for ethanol/water separation at different temperatures. The 5.0 µm thick GO film coated on PES support membrane showed a long-term stability over a testing period of one month and excellent water/ethanol selectivity at elevated temperatures. The water/ethanol selectivity is dependent on ethanol weight percentage in water/ethanol feed mixtures and on operating temperature. The water/ethanol selectivity was enhanced with an increase of ethanol weight percentage in water/ethanol mixtures, from below 100 at RT to close to 874 at a 90 °C for 90% ethanol/10% water mixture. Molecular dynamics simulation of water-ethanol mixtures in graphene bilayers, that are considered to play a key role in transport, revealed that molecular transport is negligible for layer spacing below 1 nm. The differences in the diffusion of ethanol and water in the bilayer are not consistent with the large selectivity value experimentally observed. The entry of water and ethanol into the interlayer space may be the crucial step controlling the selectivity.

Highly reusable and superhydrophobic spongy graphene aerogels for efficient oil/water separation.

Project description:Graphene aerogels (GAs) are three-dimensional (3D) graphene sponges with unique wettability and have demonstrated the potential for reducing contamination from oil spills and chemical accidents. Herein, we report new polyurethane (PU) sponge-reinforced GAs with low surface energy, high sorption capacity and excellent recyclability for use as efficient oil sorbents. Spongy graphene aerogels (SGAs) with a hierarchical porous morphology were produced by simply freeze-casting reduced graphene oxide (rGO) to form compacted macroscale sponges. This novel micro-structure benefits from the advantages of embedded graphene and presents reversible large-strain deformation (90%), high compressive strength (63 kpa) and viscoelastic stability. These superior properties, in addition to super-hydrophobicity, endow the aerogels with excellent recyclability without deteriorating the oil absorption performance. Furthermore, SGA has selective and high-volume absorbability (>100%) and can efficiently separate oil from water under continuous pumping action. The excellent absorption performance and robust mechanical properties make this graphene material promising for the large-scale recovery of spilled oil.

Virus Inactivation in Water Using Laser-Induced Graphene Filters.

Project description:Interest in the pathogenesis, detection, and prevention of viral infections has increased broadly in many fields of research over the past year. The development of water treatment technology to combat viral infection by inactivation or disinfection might play a key role in infection prevention in places where drinking water sources are biologically contaminated. Laser-induced graphene (LIG) has antimicrobial and antifouling surface effects mainly because of its electrochemical properties and texture, and LIG-based water filters have been used for the inactivation of bacteria. However, the antiviral activity of LIG-based filters has not yet been explored. Here we show that LIG filters also have antiviral effects by applying electrical potential during filtration of the model prototypic poxvirus Vaccinia lister. This antiviral activity of the LIG filters was compared with its antibacterial activity, which showed that higher voltages were required for the inactivation of viruses compared to that of bacteria. The generation of reactive oxygen species, along with surface electrical effects, played a role in the mechanism of virus inactivation. This new property of LIG highlights its potential for use in water and wastewater treatment for the electrochemical disinfection of various pathogenic microorganisms, including bacteria and viruses.

Selective Wettability Membrane for Continuous Oil-Water Separation and In Situ Visible Light-Driven Photocatalytic Purification of Water.

Project description:Membrane-based technologies are attractive for remediating oily wastewater because they are relatively energy-efficient and are applicable to a wide range of industrial effluents. For complete treatment of oily wastewater, removing dissolved contaminants from the water phase is typically followed by adsorption onto an adsorbent, which complicates the process. Here, an in-air superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic membrane-based continuous separation of surfactant-stabilized oil-in-water emulsions and in situ decontamination of water by visible-light-driven photocatalytic degradation of dissolved organic contaminants is reported. The membrane is fabricated by utilizing a thermally sensitized stainless steel mesh coated with visible light absorbing iron-doped titania nanoparticles. Post annealing of the membrane can enhance the adhesion of nanoparticles to the membrane surface by formation of a bridge between them. An apparatus that enables continuous separation of surfactant-stabilized oil-in-water emulsion and in situ photocatalytic degradation of dissolved organic matter in the water-rich permeate upon irradiation of visible light on the membrane surface with greater than 99% photocatalytic degradation is developed. The membrane demonstrates the recovery of its intrinsic water-rich permeate flux upon continuous irradiation of light after being contaminated with oil. Finally, continuous oil-water separation and in situ water decontamination is demonstrated by photocatalytically degrading model toxins in water-rich permeate.

A robust salt-tolerant superoleophobic alginate/graphene oxide aerogel for efficient oil/water separation in marine environments.

Project description:Marine pollution caused by frequent oil spill accidents has brought about tremendous damages to marine ecological environment. Therefore, the facile large-scale preparation of three-dimensional (3D) porous functional materials with special wettability is in urgent demand. In this study, we report a low-cost and salt-tolerant superoleophobic aerogel for efficient oil/seawater separation. The aerogel is prepared through incorporating graphene oxide (GO) into alginate (ALG) matrix by using a facile combined freeze-drying and ionic cross-linking method. The 3D structure interconnected by ALG and GO ensures the high mechanical strength and good flexibility of the developed aerogel. The rough microstructure combined with the hydrophilicity of the aerogel ensures its excellent underwater superoleophobic and antifouling properties. High-content polysaccharides contained in the aerogel guarantees its excellent salt-tolerant property. More impressively, the developed aerogel can retain its underwater superoleophobicity even after 30 days of immersion in seawater, indicating its good stability in marine environments. Furthermore, the aerogel could separate various oil/water mixtures with high separation efficiency (>99%) and good reusability (at least 40 cycles). The facile fabrication process combined with the excellent separation performance makes it promising for practical applications in marine environments.

Selective molecular separation of lignin model compounds by reduced graphene oxide membranes from solvent-water mixture.

Project description:Selective separation of lignin depolymerization products is key to fractionating and isolating high-value aromatic compounds from the depolymerization process. The primary aim of this study was to synthesis graphene oxide (GO) membranes for selective separations of lignin oligomeric units from polar organic solvent-water media. GO membranes were synthesized on a polymeric substrate by a shear assisted casting of aqueous GO dispersion using a wire-wound rod. Deposited GO was then reduced to different extents by controlled thermal incubation, and the impact on membrane performance was investigated. The extent of reduction of GO was established by extensive characterization with FTIR, XPS, Raman Spectroscopy, XRD, and contact angle measurements. Impressive performance with the rejection of over 70% for the model compound trimer BMP (2,6-bis[(2-hydroxy-5-methyl phenyl) methyl]-4-methylphenol) was achieved compared to only 20% rejection for the dimer GGE (guaiacylglycerol-β-guaiacylether) with isopropanol-water (90-10% by volume) as a solvent. This corresponds to an encouraging selective separation with selective permeation of dimer (GGE) 3.5 times higher compared to trimer (BMP). rGO membranes exhibited a stable performance over 84 h of operation at a shear rate of 1.1 Pa in a cross-flow mode of operation. Selective separation of GO can be effectively modulated by controlling the O/C ratio by the extent of reduction of GO; indeed, the retention of trimeric compounds increased with increasing GO reduction. The remarkable performance of GO membranes could enable energy-efficient fractionation of lignin oligomeric compounds from polar organic solvents.

Heat-Treated Micronized Polyethylene Powder for Efficient Oil/Water Separating Filters.

Project description:The targeted separation of oil/water mixtures is a rapidly growing field of research, mainly due to contaminated water becoming an increasingly important environmental issue. Superhydrophobic materials are highly suited to this application; however, growing efforts are being devoted to developing applicable technologies within a range of research communities. The optimal technical solution is one that combines a high separation efficiency with a straightforward fabrication procedure at a low cost. In this report, micronized polyethylene powder has been utilized as a low-cost hydrophobic material to manufacture easy-to-fabricate filters. The effect of heating and solvent addition on the water repellence behaviour has been investigated, according to which the optimum fabrication conditions were determined. The filters show high water repellence (WCA = 154°) and efficient oil/water separation (~99%). The filters are designed to provide a readily achievable approach for the separation of oils (hydrophobic solvents) from water in a range of potential applications.

Carbon-Bonded Alumina Filters Coated by Graphene Oxide for Water Treatment.

Project description:The aim of this paper is to prepare nano-functionalized ceramic foam filters from carbon-bonded alumina. The carbon-bonded filters were produced via the Schwartzwalder process using a two-step approach. The prepared ceramic foam filters were further coated using graphene oxide. Graphene oxide was prepared by the modified Tour method. The C/O of the graphene oxide ratio was evaluated by XPS, EDS and elemental analysis (EA). The amount and type of individual oxygen functionalities were characterized by XPS and Raman spectroscopy. The microstructure was studied by TEM, and XRD was used to evaluate the interlayer distance. In the next step, filters were coated by graphene oxide using dip-coating. After drying, the prepared composite filters were used for the purification of the water containing lead, zinc and cadmium ions. The efficiency of the sorption was very high, suggesting the potential use of these materials for the treatment of wastewater from heavy metals.
