Aerobic addition of secondary phosphine oxides to vinyl sulfides: a shortcut to 1-hydroxy-2-(organosulfanyl)ethyl(diorganyl)phosphine oxides.

ABSTRACT: Secondary phosphine oxides react with vinyl sulfides (both alkyl- and aryl-substituted sulfides) under aerobic and solvent-free conditions (80 °C, air, 7-30 h) to afford 1-hydroxy-2-(organosulfanyl)ethyl(diorganyl)phosphine oxides in 70-93% yields.

Enantioseparation of <i>P</i>-Stereogenic Secondary Phosphine Oxides and Their Stereospecific Transformation to Various Tertiary Phosphine Oxides and a Thiophosphinate.

Project description:Secondary phosphine oxides incorporating various aryl and alkyl groups were synthesized in racemic form, and these products formed the library reported in this study. TADDOL derivatives were used to obtain the optical resolution of these P-stereogenic secondary phosphine oxides. The developed resolution method showed a good scope under the optimized reaction conditions, as 9 out of 14 derivatives could be prepared with an enantiomeric excess (ee) ≥ 79% and 5 of these derivatives were practically enantiopure >P(O)H compounds (ee ≥ 98%). The scalability of this resolution method was also demonstrated. Noncovalent interactions responsible for the formation of diasteromeric complexes were elucidated by single-crystal XRD measurements. (S)-(2-Methylphenyl)phenylphosphine oxide was transformed to a variety of P-stereogenic tertiary phosphine oxides and a thiophosphinate in stereospecific Michaelis-Becker, Hirao, or Pudovik reactions.

A Mechanistic Study on the Tautomerism of H-Phosphonates, H-Phosphinates and Secondary Phosphine Oxides.

Project description:H-phosphonates, H-phosphinates and secondary phosphine oxides may be preligands, and are important building blocks in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals, pesticides, and P-ligands. The prototropic tautomerism influenced by substituent effects plays an important role in the reactivity of these species. The main goal of our research was to study the tautomerism of the >P(O)H reagents by means of computational investigations applying several DFT methods at different levels. We focused on the effect of implicit solvents, and on explaining the observed trends with physical chemical molecular descriptors. In addition, multiple reaction pathways incorporating three P-molecules were elucidated for the mechanism of the interconversion.

Arsenic bioremediation by biogenic iron oxides and sulfides.

Project description:Microcosms containing sediment from an aquifer in Cambodia with naturally elevated levels of arsenic in the associated groundwater were used to evaluate the effectiveness of microbially mediated production of iron minerals for in situ As remediation. The microcosms were first incubated without amendments for 28 days, and the release of As and other geogenic chemicals from the sediments into the aqueous phase was monitored. Nitrate or a mixture of sulfate and lactate was then added to stimulate biological Fe(II) oxidation or sulfate reduction, respectively. Without treatment, soluble As concentrations reached 3.9 ± 0.9 ?M at the end of the 143-day experiment. However, in the nitrate- and sulfate-plus-lactate-amended microcosms, soluble As levels decreased to 0.01 and 0.41 ± 0.13 ?M, respectively, by the end of the experiment. Analyses using a range of biogeochemical and mineralogical tools indicated that sorption onto freshly formed hydrous ferric oxide (HFO) and iron sulfide mineral phases are the likely mechanisms for As removal in the respective treatments. Incorporation of the experimental results into a one-dimensional transport-reaction model suggests that, under conditions representative of the Cambodian aquifer, the in situ precipitation of HFO would be effective in bringing groundwater into compliance with the World Health Organization (WHO) provisional guideline value for As (10 ppb or 0.13 ?M), although soluble Mn release accompanying microbial Fe(II) oxidation presents a potential health concern. In contrast, production of biogenic iron sulfide minerals would not remediate the groundwater As concentration below the recommended WHO limit.

Project description:β-Hydrazonophosphine oxides are precursors of useful organophosphorus compounds, including phosphorylated N-heterocycles, α-aminophosphonates, and vinylphosphonates. In this work, a general transition metal-free synthesis of β-hydrazonophosphine oxides was developed. The method relies on the Michael addition of phosphine oxides R2P(O)H to reactive azoalkenes (1,2-diaza-1,3-butadienes), which are generated in situ from α-halohydrazones and Hunig's base. The reaction stereoselectively leads to Z-isomers of β-hydrazonophosphine oxides that are stabilized by intramolecular hydrogen bonding. The conversion of the products thus obtained into potential chelating ligands was showcased.

Palladium-catalyzed ?-arylation of benzylic phosphine oxides.

Project description:A novel approach to prepare diarylmethyl phosphine oxides from benzyl phosphine oxides via deprotonative cross-coupling processes (DCCP) is reported. The optimization of the reaction was guided by High-Throughput Experimentation (HTE) techniques. The Pd(OAc)2/Xantphos-based catalyst enabled the reaction between benzyl diphenyl or dicyclohexyl phosphine oxide derivatives and aryl bromides in good to excellent yields (51-91%).

Enantioselective Coupling of Dienes and Phosphine Oxides.

Project description:We report a Pd-catalyzed intermolecular hydrophosphinylation of 1,3-dienes to afford chiral allylic phosphine oxides. Commodity dienes and air stable phosphine oxides couple to generate organophosphorus building blocks with high enantio- and regiocontrol. This method constitutes the first asymmetric hydrophosphinylation of dienes.

Project description:Catalytic synthesis of nonracemic P-chiral phosphine derivatives remains a significant challenge. Here we report Cu-catalyzed enantioselective arylation of secondary phosphine oxides with diaryliodonium salts for the synthesis of tertiary phosphine oxides with high enantiomeric excess. The new process is demonstrated on a wide range of substrates and leads to products that are well-established P-chiral catalysts and ligands.

Each layer contains centrosymmetric dimers formed by a pair of strong O-H⋯N hydrogen bonds with an R(2) (2)(10) motif, while strong O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds forming C(10) chains connect mol-ecules into a two-dimensional network. Additional stabilization is supplied by weak C-H⋯O hydrogen bonds and weak π-π stacking inter-actions with centroid-centroid distances in the range 3.4220 (7)-3.9616 (7) Å.

Chemoselective Reduction of Phosphine Oxides by 1,3-Diphenyl-Disiloxane.

Project description:Reduction of phosphine oxides to the corresponding phosphines represents the most straightforward method to prepare these valuable reagents. However, existing methods to reduce phosphine oxides suffer from inadequate chemoselectivity due to the strength of the P=O bond and/or poor atom economy. Herein, we report the discovery of the most powerful chemoselective reductant for this transformation to date, 1,3-diphenyl-disiloxane (DPDS). Additive-free DPDS selectively reduces both secondary and tertiary phosphine oxides with retention of configuration even in the presence of aldehyde, nitro, ester, ?,?-unsaturated carbonyls, azocarboxylates, and cyano functional groups. Arrhenius analysis indicates that the activation barrier for reduction by DPDS is significantly lower than any previously calculated silane reduction system. Inclusion of a catalytic Brønsted acid further reduced the activation barrier and led to the first silane-mediated reduction of acyclic phosphine oxides at room temperature.
