Precise AuxPt?-x Alloy Nanoparticle Array of Tunable Composition for Catalytic Applications.

ABSTRACT: A 3-dimensional Block Copolymer Micellar nanoLithography (BCML) process was used to prepare AuxPt1-x alloy nanoparticles (NPs) monodisperse in size and composition, strongly anchored onto SiO2-particles (0.2?wt.% AuxPt1-x/SiO2). The particles possess a face-centered cubic (fcc) crystal structure and their size could be varied from 3-12?nm. We demonstrate the uniformity of the Au/Pt composition by analyzing individual NPs by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The strongly bound AuxPt1-x NPs catalyzed the oxidation of CO with high activity. Thermal ageing experiments in pure CO2 as well as in ambient atmosphere demonstrated stability of the size distribution for times as long as 22?h.

Tunable and precise miniature lithium heater for point-of-care applications.

Project description:Point-of-care diagnostic assays often involve multistep reactions, requiring a wide range of precise temperatures. Although precise heating is critical to performing these assays, it is challenging to provide it in an electricity-free format away from established infrastructure. Chemical heaters are electricity-free and use exothermic reactions. However, they are unsuitable for point-of-care multistep reactions because they sacrifice portability, have a narrow range of achievable temperatures, and long ramp-up times. Here we developed a miniature heater by modulating the lithium-water reaction kinetics using bubbles in a channel. Our heaters are up to 8,000 times smaller than current devices and can provide precise (within 5 °C) and tunable heating from 37 °C to 65 °C (?TRT = 12 °C to 40 °C) with ramp-up times of a minute. We demonstrate field portablity and stability and show their use in an electricity-free multistep workflow that needs a range of temperatures. Ultimately, we envision providing better access to cutting edge biochemical techniques, including diagnostics, by making portable and electricity-free heating available at any location.

Optimizing Gold Nanoparticle Cluster Configurations (n ? 7) for Array Applications.

Project description:Nanoparticle cluster arrays (NCAs) are novel electromagnetic materials whose properties depend on the size and shape of the constituent nanoparticle clusters. A rational design of NCAs with defined optical properties requires a thorough understanding of the geometry dependent optical response of the building blocks. Herein, we systematically investigate the near- and far-field responses of clusters of closely packed 60 nm gold nanoparticles (n ? 7) as a function of size and cluster geometry through a combination of experimental spectroscopy and generalized Mie Theory calculations. From all of the investigated cluster configurations, nanoparticle trimers with D(3h) geometry and heptamers in D(6h) geometry stand out due to their polarization insensitive responses and high electric (E-) field intensity enhancement, making them building blocks of choice in this size range. The near-field intensity maximum of the D(6h) heptamer is red-shifted with regard to the D(3h) trimer by 125 nm, which confirms the possibility of a rational tuning of the near-field response in NCAs through the choice of the constituent nanoparticle clusters. For the nanoparticle trimer we investigate the influence of the cluster geometry on the optical response in detail and map near- and far-field spectra associated with the transition of the cluster configuration from D(3h) into D(?h).

Single pulse heating of a nanoparticle array for biological applications.

Project description:With the ability to convert external excitation into heat, nanomaterials play an essential role in many biomedical applications. Two modes of nanoparticle (NP) array heating, nanoscale-confined heating (NCH) and macroscale-collective heating (MCH), have been found and extensively studied. Despite this, the resulting biological response at the protein level remains elusive. In this study, we developed a computational model to systematically investigate the single-pulsed heating of the NP array and corresponding protein denaturation/activation. We found that NCH may lead to targeted protein denaturation, however, nanoparticle heating does not lead to nanoscale selective TRPV1 channel activation. The excitation duration and NP concentration are primary factors that determine a window for targeted protein denaturation, and together with heating power, we defined quantified boundaries for targeted protein denaturation. Our results boost our understandings of the NCH and MCH under realistic physical constraints and provide robust guidance to customize biomedical platforms with desired NP heating.

AuPt Alloy Nanostructures with Tunable Composition and Enzyme-like Activities for Colorimetric Detection of Bisulfide.

Project description:Tuning the enzyme-like activity and studying the interaction between biologically relevant species and nano-enzymes may facilitate the applications of nanostructures in mimicking natural enzymes. In this work, AuPt alloy nanoparticles (NPs) with varying compositions were prepared through a facile method by co-reduction of Au3+ and Pt2+ in aqueous solutions. The composition could be tuned easily by adjusting the molar ratios of added Pt2+ to Au3+. It was found that both peroxidase-like and oxidase-like activity of AuPt alloy NPs were highly dependent on the alloy compositions, which thus suggesting an effective way to tailor their catalytic properties. By investigating the inhibitory effects of HS- on the enzyme-like activity of AuPt alloy NPs and natural enzyme, we have developed a method for colorimetric detection of HS- and evaluation of the inhibiting effects of inhibitors on natural and artificial enzymes. In addition, the responsive ability of this method was influenced largely by the composition: AuPt alloy NPs show much lower limit of detection for HS- than Pt NPs while Pt NPs show wider linear range than AuPt alloy NPs. This study suggests the facile way not only for synthesis of alloy nanostructures, but also for tuning their catalytic activities and for use in bioanalysis.

Pt-Sn alloy shells with tunable composition and structure on Au nanoparticles for boosting ethanol oxidation.

Project description:Combining the core-shell structure with the optimization of surface composition and structure in the shell is a fantastic strategy to enhance the electrocatalytic performances. Here, we synthesized trimetallic Au@PtxSny core-shell nanoparticles (NPs) with tunable composition and structure of Pt-Sn alloyed shells. Impressively, the Au@PtSn core-shell NPs with hexagonal PtSn alloyed shells exhibited the highest mass activity and specific activity toward ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) in alkaline electrolyte, which are 13.0 and 12.7 times higher than those of the commercial Pt/C. In addition, the Au@PtSn core-shell NPs displayed the best stability compared to commercial Pt/C, with only 44.8% loss vs. 86.8% loss in mass activity after 1,000 s due to the stronger anti-poisoning ability for reaction intermediates. The theory calculations reveal that the introduction of Au core and alloying Pt with Sn both endow Pt with an appropriate d-band center, and thus effectively boosting the EOR activity.

Dual Metastability in Electroless Plating: Complex Inertness Enabling the Deposition of Composition-Tunable Platinum Copper Alloy Nanostructures.

Project description:Autocatalytic deposition represents a facile, versatile, and scalable wet-chemical tool for nanofabrication. However, the intricate component interplay in plating baths containing multiple metal species impedes alloy deposition. We resolved this challenge in the bimetallic copper-platinum system by exploiting the kinetic stability of platinum complexes, which allows adjusting their ligand sphere and thus reactivity independently from the present copper ions in a preceding, thermally activated ligand exchange step. By using metastable PtIV precursors of varying degrees of complexation, copper-platinum alloys of adjustable atomic ratio were plated from solutions of identical composition and concentration, but differing local coordination environment. Due to its excellent conformity and nanoscale homogeneity, the reaction is compatible with ambitious 3D substrate morphologies, as demonstrated in the template-assisted fabrication of nanotubes with high aspect ratio. The ability to generate additional synthetic degrees of freedom by decoupling the metal complex speciation from the solution composition is of large interest for redox-chemical synthesis techniques, such as electrodeposition or nanoparticle colloid production.

Project description:A general organometallic route has been developed to synthesize Co(x)Ni(1-x) and Co(x)Fe(1-x) alloy nanoparticles with a fully tunable composition and a size of 4-10 nm with high yield. In contrast to previously reported synthesis methods using dicobalt octacarbonyl (Co(2)(CO)(8)), here the cobalt-cobalt bond in the carbonyl complex is first broken with anhydrous acetone. The acetonated compound, in the presence of iron carbonyl or nickel acetylacetonate, is necessary to obtain small composition tunable alloys. This new route and insights will provide guidelines for the wet-chemical synthesis of yet unmade bimetallic alloy nanoparticles. Composition-adjustable Ag-Au substitutional alloy microcages enabling tunable plasmon resonance for ultrasensitive SERS.

Project description:Engineering the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) properties is a critical issue for improving device performance in the fields of plasmonics, nanophotonics, optoelectronics, and electrochemistry. Here, we demonstrated a programmable manipulation of the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect using composition-adjustable Ag-Au substitutional alloy microcages (SAMCs) through a facile NaBH4-cooperative galvanic replacement reaction. The SPR frequency of the Ag-Au SAMCs can be continuously and exquisitely manipulated without resonance damping or broadening via accurate adjustment of the elemental composition distribution at the perfect homogeneity on the atomic-level. Significantly, both the tunable SPR frequency and excellent chemical stability synergistically endow the hollow Ag-Au SAMCs with excellent SERS sensitivity and reproducibility, which lays a foundation for the realization of trace detection of thiram at an ultralow concentration of 1 × 10-12 M. This strategy is a promising candidate for efficient promotion of the SERS activity for metal-based substrates.

Precise quantification of nanoparticle internalization.

Project description:Nanoparticles have opened new exciting avenues for both diagnostic and therapeutic applications in human disease, and targeted nanoparticles are increasingly used as specific drug delivery vehicles. The precise quantification of nanoparticle internalization is of importance to measure the impact of physical and chemical properties on the uptake of nanoparticles into target cells or into cells responsible for rapid clearance. Internalization of nanoparticles has been measured by various techniques, but comparability of data between different laboratories is impeded by lack of a generally accepted standardized assay. Furthermore, the distinction between associated and internalized particles has been a challenge for many years, although this distinction is critical for most research questions. Previously used methods to verify intracellular location are typically not quantitative and do not lend themselves to high-throughput analysis. Here, we developed a mathematical model which integrates the data from high-throughput flow cytometry measurements with data from quantitative confocal microscopy. The generic method described here will be a useful tool in biomedical nanotechnology studies. The method was then applied to measure the impact of surface coatings of vesosomes on their internalization by cells of the reticuloendothelial system (RES). RES cells are responsible for rapid clearance of nanoparticles, and the resulting fast blood clearance is one of the major challenges in biomedical applications of nanoparticles. Coating of vesosomes with long chain polyethylene glycol showed a trend for lower internalization by RES cells.
