Crystal structure of Sr2CdPt2 containing linear platinum chains.

ABSTRACT: The ternary inter-metallic title phase, distrontium cadmium diplatinum, was prepared from stoichiometric amounts of the elements at 1123 K for one day. The crystal structure adopts the ortho-rhom-bic Ca2GaCu2 structure type in space group Immm. Its main features are characterized by linear (Pt-Pt⋯Pt-Pt) n chains that are aligned along [010] and condensed through cadmium atoms forming Cd-centred Pt2Cd2/2 rectangles to build up sheets parallel to (001). These sheets are connected to each other via alternating (001) sheets of strontium atoms along [001]. The strontium sheets consists of corrugated Sr4 units that are condensed to each other through edge-sharing parallel to [100].

Project description:In the title compound, μ-di-phenyl-phosphido-μ-hydrido-bis-[bromido-(tri-phenyl-phosphane-κP)platinum(II)] diethyl ether monosolvate, [Pt2Br2(C12H10P)H(C18H15P)2]·C4H10O or [Pt2(μ-H)(μ-PPh2)Br2(PPh3)2]·(C2H5)2O, the PtII atoms are coordinated in a distorted square-planar arrangement, with one hydrido and one phosphido ligand bridging in a trans position. In the lattice, C-H⋯·O and C-H⋯π interactions are present. This complex has a total number of 32 electrons, 16 electrons for each PtII atom. One of the Br atoms is disordered over two positions in a 0.92:0.08 ratio.

Crystal structure of cis-diamminebis(nitrito-κN)platinum(II).

Project description:Single crystals of cis-[Pt(NO2)2(NH3)2], were obtained by means of hyper-saturation directly out of a plating electrolyte. The square-planar coordination environment of the divalent Pt(II) atom is formed by four N atoms belonging to two ammine and two monodentate nitrite ligands. The ligands adopt a cis configuration. The crystal structure contains stacks of close-packed mol-ecules which run parallel to [001]. There are nine crystallographically independent inter-molecular N-H⋯O hydrogen bonds, resulting in a hydrogen-bonded hxl-type framework in which each mol-ecule serves as an eight-connected node. Four of the nine distinct hydrogen bonds connect complexes which belong to the same close-packed column parallel to [001]. In contrast to the previously reported crystal structure of the trans isomer, the title structure does not display intra-molecular hydrogen bonding.

Crystal structures of two platinum(II) complexes containing ethyl eugenoxyacetate and 2-amino-pyridine.

Project description:In the title complexes, trans-(2-amino-pyridine-?N)di-chlorido-{4-eth-oxy-carbonyl-meth-oxy-3-meth-oxy-1-[(2,3-?)-prop-2-en-1-yl]benzene}-platinum(II), [PtCl2(C5H6N2)(C14H18O4)], (I), and (2-amino-pyridine-?N)chlorido{5-eth-oxy-car-bon-yl-meth-oxy-4-meth-oxy-1-[(2,3-?)-prop-2-en-1-yl]phenyl-?C1}-platinum(II), [Pt(C14H17O4)Cl(C5H6N2)], (II), the central PtII metal atom displays a distorted square-planar coordination, with the PtII atom coordinated by the pyridine N atom, the C=C double bond of the eugenol ligand and two Cl atoms for (I) or one Cl atom and a C atom of the phenyl ring for (II). The allyl fragment in (I) is disordered, with population parameters 0.614?(14) and 0.386?(14) for the two positions of the central C atom. The least-squares planes through the two aromatic ring systems make a dihedral angle of 51.10?(13)° for (I) and 78.5?(2)° for (II). Intra-molecular N-H?O and N-H?? inter-actions occur in (I). In (I), inversion dimers formed by C-H?Cl inter-actions are further linked into chains parallel to the b axis by C-H?O hydrogen bonds. Both aromatic rings are involved in ?-? inter-actions, with centroid-to-centroid distances of 3.508?(3) and 3.791?(3)?Å. In (II), inversion dimers form chains parallel to the b axis by C-H?O inter-actions.

Crystal structure of 2,3-di-methyl-maleic anhydride: continuous chains of electrostatic attraction.

Project description:In the crystal structure of 2,3-di-methyl-maleic anhydride, C6H6O3, the closest non-bonding inter-molecular distances, between the carbonyl C and O atoms of neighboring mol-ecules, were measured as 2.9054 (11) and 3.0509 (11) Å, which are well below the sum of the van der Waals radii for these atoms. These close contacts, as well as packing motifs similar to that of the title compound, were also found in the crystal structure of maleic anhydride itself and other 2,3-disubstituted maleic anhydrides. Computational modeling suggests that this close contact is caused by strong electrostatic inter-actions between the carbonyl C and O atoms.

Linear ubiquitin chains: enzymes, mechanisms and biology.

Project description:Ubiquitination is a versatile post-translational modification that regulates a multitude of cellular processes. Its versatility is based on the ability of ubiquitin to form multiple types of polyubiquitin chains, which are recognized by specific ubiquitin receptors to induce the required cellular response. Linear ubiquitin chains are linked through Met 1 and have been established as important players of inflammatory signalling and apoptotic cell death. These chains are generated by a ubiquitin E3 ligase complex called the linear ubiquitin chain assembly complex (LUBAC) that is thus far the only E3 ligase capable of forming linear ubiquitin chains. The complex consists of three subunits, HOIP, HOIL-1L and SHARPIN, each of which have specific roles in the observed biological functions of LUBAC. Furthermore, LUBAC has been found to be associated with OTULIN and CYLD, deubiquitinases that disassemble linear chains and counterbalance the E3 ligase activity of LUBAC. Gene mutations in HOIP, HOIL-1L and OTULIN are found in human patients who suffer from autoimmune diseases, and HOIL-1L mutations are also found in myopathy patients. In this paper, we discuss the mechanisms of linear ubiquitin chain generation and disassembly by their respective enzymes and review our current understanding of their biological functions and association with human diseases.

Crystal structure of Sc1.91In1.39Mo15Se19, containing Mo6 and Mo9 clusters.

Project description:The structure of scandium indium penta-deca-molybdenum nona-deca-selenide, Sc1.91In1.39Mo15Se19, is isotypic with In2.9Mo15Se19 [Grüttner et al. (1979 ▸). Acta Cryst. B35, 285-292]. It is characterized by two cluster units Mo6Se (i) 8Se (a) 6 and Mo9Se (i) 11Se (a) 6 (where i represents inner and a apical atoms) that are present in a 1:1 ratio. The cluster units are centered at Wyckoff positions 2b and 2c and have point-group symmetry -3 and -6, respectively. The clusters are inter-connected through additional Mo-Se bonds. Sc-Se and In-Se bonds complete the structural set-up. In the title compound, the Sc(3+) cations replace the trivalent indium atoms present in In2.9Mo15Se19, and a deficiency is observed at the monovalent indium site. One Mo, one Se and the Sc atom are situated on mirror planes, whereas two other Se atoms and the In atom are situated on threefold rotation axes.

Emerging magnetic order in platinum atomic contacts and chains.

Project description:The development of atomic-scale structures revealing novel transport phenomena is a major goal of nanotechnology. Examples include chains of atoms that form while stretching a transition metal contact or the predicted formation of magnetic order in these chains, the existence of which is still debated. Here we report an experimental study of the magneto-conductance (MC) and anisotropic MC with atomic-size contacts and mono-atomic chains of the nonmagnetic metal platinum. We find a pronounced and diverse MC behaviour, the amplitude and functional dependence change when stretching the contact by subatomic distances. These findings can be interpreted as a signature of local magnetic order in the chain, which may be of particular importance for the application of atomic-sized contacts in spintronic devices of the smallest possible size.

Conducting linear chains of sulphur inside carbon nanotubes.

Project description:Despite extensive research for more than 200 years, the experimental isolation of monatomic sulphur chains, which are believed to exhibit a conducting character, has eluded scientists. Here we report the synthesis of a previously unobserved composite material of elemental sulphur, consisting of monatomic chains stabilized in the constraining volume of a carbon nanotube. This one-dimensional phase is confirmed by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and synchrotron X-ray diffraction. Interestingly, these one-dimensional sulphur chains exhibit long domain sizes of up to 160 nm and high thermal stability (~800 K). Synchrotron X-ray diffraction shows a sharp structural transition of the one-dimensional sulphur occurring at ~450-650 K. Our observations, and corresponding electronic structure and quantum transport calculations, indicate the conducting character of the one-dimensional sulphur chains under ambient pressure. This is in stark contrast to bulk sulphur that needs ultrahigh pressures exceeding ~90 GPa to become metallic.

A ubiquitin ligase complex assembles linear polyubiquitin chains.

Project description:The ubiquitin system plays important roles in the regulation of numerous cellular processes by conjugating ubiquitin to target proteins. In most cases, conjugation of polyubiquitin to target proteins regulates their function. In the polyubiquitin chains reported to date, ubiquitin monomers are linked via isopeptide bonds between an internal Lys and a C-terminal Gly. Here, we report that a protein complex consisting of two RING finger proteins, HOIL-1L and HOIP, exhibits ubiquitin polymerization activity by recognizing ubiquitin moieties of proteins. The polyubiquitin chain generated by the complex is not formed by Lys linkages, but by linkages between the C- and N-termini of ubiquitin, indicating that the ligase complex possesses a unique feature to assemble a novel head-to-tail linear polyubiquitin chain. Moreover, the complex regulates the stability of Ub-GFP (a GFP fusion protein with an N-terminal ubiquitin). The linear polyubiquitin chain generated post-translationally may function as a new modulator of proteins.

Cofactor-containing antibodies: crystal structure of the original yellow antibody.

Project description:Antibodies are generally thought to be a class of proteins that function without the use of cofactors. However, it is not widely appreciated that antibodies are believed to be the major carrier protein in human circulation for the important riboflavin cofactor that is involved in a host of biological phenomena. A further link between riboflavin and antibodies was discovered 30 years ago when a bright-yellow antibody, IgG(GAR), was purified from a patient with multiple myeloma who had turned yellow during the course of her disease. It was subsequently shown that the yellow color of this antibody was due to riboflavin binding. However, it was not known how and where riboflavin was bound to this antibody. We now report the crystal structure of this historically important IgG(GAR) Fab at 3.0-A resolution. The riboflavin is located in the antigen-combining site with its isoalloxazine ring stacked between the parallel aromatic moieties of TyrH33, PheH58, and TyrH100A. Together with additional hydrogen bonds, these interactions reveal the structural basis for high-affinity riboflavin binding. The ligand specificity of IgG(GAR) is compared with another riboflavin-binding antibody, IgG(DOT), which was purified from a second patient with multiple myeloma. The crystal structure of IgG(GAR) provides a starting point for attempts to understand the physiological relevance and chemical functions of cofactor-containing antibodies.
