Project description:By attaching pyridine groups to a diaza[6]helicene, a helical, bis-ditopic, bis-N N-coordinating ligand can be accessed. Dinuclear rhenium complexes featuring this bridging ligand, of the form [{Re(CO)3 Cl}2 (N N-N N)], have been prepared and resolved to give enantiopure complexes. These complexes are phosphorescent in solution at room temperature under one- and two-photon excitation. Their experimental chiroptical properties (optical rotation, electronic circular dichroism and circularly polarized emission) have been measured. They show, for instance, emission dissymmetry factors of c.a. ±3x10-3 . Quantum-chemical calculations indicate the importance of stereochemistry on the optical activity, pointing towards further design improvements in such types of complexes.

Project description:The title compound, [Re(2)(OH)(C(10)H(8)N(2))(2)(CO)(6)][ReO(4)], is a mixed-valence rhenium compound containing discrete anions and cations. The Re(I) atoms are in a slightly distorted octa-hedral environment, whereas the Re(VII) atoms show the typical tetra-hedral coordination mode. The dihedral angle between the two bipyridine groups is 34.3?(7)°.

Project description:Rhenium(V) oxo complexes of general formula [ReO(OMe)(N^N)Cl2], where N^N = 4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline, 1, or 3,4,7,8-tetramethyl-1,10-phenanthroline, 2, effectively kill cancer cells by triggering necroptosis, a non-apoptotic form of cell death. Both complexes evoke necrosome (RIP1-RIP3)-dependent intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and propidium iodide uptake. The complexes also induce mitochondrial membrane potential depletion, a possible downstream effect of ROS production. Apparently, 1 and 2 are the first rhenium complexes to evoke cellular events consistent with programmed necrosis in cancer cells. Furthermore, 1 and 2 display low acute toxicity in C57BL/6 mice and reasonable stability in fresh human blood.

Project description:The excellent π-accepting azodicarboxylic esters adcOR (R = Et, iPr, tBu, Bn (CH2-C6H5) and Ph) and the piperidinyl amide derivative adcpip were used as bridging chelate ligands in dinuclear Re(CO)3 complexes [{Re(CO)3Cl}2(µ-adcOR)] and [{Re(CO)3Cl}2(µ-adcpip)]. From the adcpip ligand the mononuclear derivatives [Re(CO)3Cl(adcpip)] and [Re(CO)3(PPh3)(µ-adcpip)]Cl were also obtained. Optimised geometries from density functional theory (DFT) calculations show syn and anti isomers for the dinuclear fac-Re(CO)3 complexes at slightly different energies but they were not distinguishable from experimental IR or UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy. The electrochemistry of the adc complexes showed reduction potentials slightly below 0.0 V vs. the ferrocene/ferrocenium couple. Attempts to generate the radicals [{Re(CO)3Cl}2(µ-adcOR)]•- failed as they are inherently unstable, losing very probably first the Cl- coligand and then rapidly cleaving one [Re(CO)3] fragment. Consequently, we found signals in EPR very probably due to mononuclear radical complexes [Re(CO)3(solv)(adc)]•. The underlying Cl-→solvent exchange was modelled for the mononuclear [Re(CO)3Cl(adcpip)] using DFT calculations and showed a markedly enhanced Re-Cl labilisation for the reduced compared with the neutral complex. Both the easy reduction with potentials ranging roughly from -0.2 to -0.1 V for the adc ligands and the low-energy NIR absorptions in the 700 to 850 nm range place the adc ligands with their lowest-lying π* orbital being localised on the azo function, amongst comparable bridging chelate N^N coordinating ligands with low-lying π* orbitals of central azo, tetrazine or pyrazine functions. Comparative (TD)DFT-calculations on the Re(CO)3Cl complexes of the adcpip ligand using the quite established basis set and functionals M06-2X/def2TZVP/LANL2DZ/CPCM(THF) and the more advanced TPSSh/def2-TZVP(+def2-ECP for Re)/CPCMC(THF) for single-point calculations with BP86/def2-TZVP(+def2-ECP for Re)/CPCMC(THF) optimised geometries showed a markedly better agreement of the latter with the experimental XRD, IR and UV-Vis absorption data.

An unusual metal-induced methoxylation at the carbon atom of the triazine ring of the bridging TPT ligand was observed. The nucleophilic attack of MeO(-) on C(3) results in a tetrahedral geometry around the carbon atom. Concomitantly, the uncoordinated pyridyl ring is protonated and rotated into a perpendicular orientation relative to the central C(3)N(3) ring. Reaction of TPT with [NEt(4)](2)[ReBr(3)(CO)(3)] in benzene-methanol resulted in an unexpected dinuclear complex 7, with formulation [mu-C(3)N(3)(OMe)(py)(3)][Re(CO)(3)][ReBr(CO)(3)]. The methoxylated TPT ligand functions simultaneously as a tridentate and bidentate ligand with two fac-Re(CO)(3)(+) cores. Project description:Two new neutral fac-[Re(CO)₃(phen)L] compounds (1,2), with phen = 1,10-phenanthroline and L = O₂C(CH₂)₅CH₃ or O₂C(CH₂)₄C≡CH, were synthetized in one-pot procedures from fac-[Re(CO)₃(phen)Cl] and the corresponding carboxylic acids, and were fully characterized by IR and UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy, ¹H- and 13C-NMR, mass spectrometry and X-ray crystallography. The compounds, which display orange luminescence, were used as probes for living cancer HeLa cell staining. Confocal microscopy revealed accumulation of both dyes in mitochondria. To investigate the mechanism of mitochondrial staining, a new non-emissive compound, fac-[Re(CO)₃(phen)L], with L = O₂C(CH₂)₃((C₅H₅)Fe(C₅H₄), i.e., containing a ferrocenyl moiety, was synthetized and characterized (3). 3 shows the same mitochondrial accumulation pattern as 1 and 2. Emission of 3 can only be possible when ferrocene-containing ligand dissociates from the metal center to produce a species containing the luminescent fac-[Re(CO)₃(phen)]⁺ core. The release of ligands from the Re center was verified in vitro through the conjugation with model proteins. These findings suggest that the mitochondria accumulation of compounds 1-3 is due to the formation of luminescent fac-[Re(CO)₃(phen)]⁺ products, which react with cellular matrix molecules giving secondary products and are uptaken into the negatively charged mitochondrial membranes. Thus, reported compounds feature a rare dissociation-driven mechanism of action with great potential for biological applications.

Project description:Rhenium(I) pyridocarbazole complexes with photoinduced antiproliferative activity are reported. The substitutionally inert complexes induce cell death by singlet oxygen generation upon irradiation with red light (λ ≥ 620 nm), while only weak background cytotoxicity is observed in the dark. Due to their ability to inhibit protein kinases (nanomolar IC50 values against Pim1 at 10 μM ATP), this class of rhenium complexes point into the direction of dual function antiproliferative therapy with a single drug in which photodynamic therapy is combined with the inhibition of cancer related protein kinases.

Project description:A series of six coordination polymers based on octahedral cluster anions [Re6Q8(CN)6]4− (Q = S or Se) and Ag+ cations coordinated by bipyridine analogs were synthesized under solvothermal conditions. Their structures have been characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction. Compounds 1 and 2 described by the general formula [{Ag(phen)}4Re6Q8(CN)6] (Q = Se (1), S (2); phen = 1,10-phenanthroline) exhibit layered structures assembled into a supramolecular network by CH…π contacts. At the same time, compounds [{Ag(bipym)}2Ag2Re6Se8(CN)6] (bipym = 2,2′-bipyrimidine) (3), [{Ag2(bipy)}Ag2Re6Se8(CN)6]·CH3CN (bipy = 4,4′-bipyridine) (4) and [{Ag(dpbp)}4Re6Q8(CN)6]·2H2O·2CH3CN (Q = Se (5), S (6); dpbp = 4,4′-Di(4-pyridyl)biphenyl)) evince framework structures. In 1, 2, 5 and 6 weak Ag⋯Ag interactions are observed. All the compounds show luminescence in the red region. The luminescence quantum yields and lifetimes were found to be notably higher than those for most of the coordination polymers based on the octahedral rhenium cluster complexes.

Project description:The reduction of carbon dioxide to chemical fuels such as carbon monoxide is an important challenge in the field of renewable energy conversion. Given the thermodynamic stability of carbon dioxide, it is difficult to efficiently activate this substrate in a selective fashion and the development of new electrocatalysts for CO2 reduction is of prime importance. To this end, we have prepared and studied a new fac-ReI(CO)3 complex supported by a bipyridine ligand containing ancillary BODIPY moieties ([Re(BB2)(CO)3Cl]). Voltammetry experiments revealed that this system displays a rich redox chemistry under N2, as [Re(BB2)(CO)3Cl] can be reduced by up to four electrons at modest potentials. These redox events have been characterized as the ReI/0 couple, and three ligand based reductions - two of which are localized on the BODIPY units. The ability of the BB2 ligand to serve as a non-innocent redox reservoir is manifest in an enhanced electrocatalysis with CO2 as compared to an unsubstituted Re-bipyridine complex lacking BODIPY units ([Re(bpy)(CO)3Cl]). The second order rate constant for reduction of CO2 by [Re(BB2)(CO)3Cl] was measured to be k = 3400 M-1s-1 at an applied potential of -2.0 V versus SCE, which is roughly three times greater than the corresponding unsubstituted Re-bipyridine homologue. Photophysical and photochemical studies were also carried out to determine if [Re(BB2)(CO)3Cl] was a competent platform for CO2 reduction using visible light. These experiments showed that this complex supports unusual excited state dynamics that precludes efficient CO2 reduction and are distinct from those that are typically observed for fac-ReI(CO)3 complexes.
