Au-Ag-Cu nano-alloys: tailoring of permittivity.

ABSTRACT: Precious metal alloys enables new possibilities to tailor materials for specific optical functions. Here we present a systematic study of the effects of a nanoscale alloying on the permittivity of Au-Ag-Cu metals at 38 different atomic mixing ratios. The permittivity was measured and analyzed numerically by applying the Drude model. X-ray diffraction (XRD) revealed the face centered cubic lattice of the alloys. Both, optical spectra and XRD results point towards an equivalent composition-dependent electron scattering behavior. Correlation between the fundamental structural parameters of alloys and the resulting optical properties is elucidated. Plasmonic properties of the Au-Ag-Cu alloy nanoparticles were investigated by numerical simulations. Guidelines for designing plasmonic response of nano- structures and their patterns are presented from the material science perspective.

High optical enhancement in Au/Ag alloys and porous Au using Surface-Enhanced Raman spectroscopy technique.

Project description:We report high optical enhancement in Ag/Au alloys and porous gold nanostructures using Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) technique. Scanning electron microscopy investigation shows the formation of Ag/Au alloys particles during irradiation of Ag-Au bilayer deposited on FTO (SnO2:F) substrate by laser fluency equal to 0.5 J/cm2 or 1.0 J/cm2 with 12 ns laser pulse duration. The dealloying process of these Au-Ag alloy particles leads to the formation of Au nanoporous particles. The obtained nanostructures were studied with SERS and revealed a promising enhancement factor in porous Au nanostructure and tunability of localized surface plasmon resonance. The highly dense strong hot spots and large specific area in porous structure of gold nanostructures is the origin of the highly enhancement factor observed experimentally and theoretically. A very good agreement between simulation and experimental results was found confirming the potential of Au/Ag alloys and particularly porous gold nanostructure in SERS application.

Effect of the Electronic State of Cu, Ag, and Au on Diesel Soot Abatement: Performance of Cu/ZnO, Ag/ZnO, and Au/ZnO Catalysts.

Project description:Noble metals such as Au, Ag, and Cu supported over semiconducting ZnO are well-known heterogeneous oxidation catalysts. All of them have been utilized for the oxidation of diesel soot with varied success. However, Au-supported ZnO is seen to be superior among them. Here, we present a comparative study of all these three catalysts for diesel soot oxidation to explain why Au/ZnO is the best among them, demonstrating the contribution of electronic states of metals in composite catalysts. The electronic states of Cu, Ag, and Au determined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy on 1 wt % Cu/ZnO, 1 wt % Ag/ZnO, and 1 wt % Au/ZnO catalysts were correlated with their diesel soot oxidation activities. Although all three catalysts present reasonable diesel soot oxidation activities at relatively low temperature, 1% Cu/ZnO and 1% Ag/ZnO oxidize only about 60% of the deposited diesel soot around 250 °C and 1% Au/ZnO oxidizes 100% of the deposited diesel soot, at a temperature as low as 230 °C. The activity of the catalysts is attributed to the formation of stable M0-Mδ+ bifunctional catalytic sites at the metal-ZnO interface, which enhances the contact efficiency of solid diesel soot on Mδ+ and generates the superoxide species on M0 moieties. The stability of the bifunctional M0-Mδ+ sites is controlled by the electronic interactions between the metal (M) and n-type semiconductor ZnO at their interface. Very high activity of 1% Au/ZnO is attributed to the presence of Au3+ at the catalyst surface, which generates a stronger Coulombic force with diesel soot electrons. We demonstrate a direct relation between the diesel soot oxidation activity of these three metals and their electronic states at the catalyst surface.

Bottom-Up (Cu, Ag, Au)/Al2O3/Bi2Te3 Assembled Thermoelectric Heterostructures.

Project description:The interface affects the transmission behavior of electrons and phonons, which in turn determines the performance of thermoelectric materials. In this paper, metals (Cu, Ag, Au)/Al2O3/Bi2Te3 heterostructures have been fabricated from bottom to up to optimize the thermoelectric power factor. The introducing metals can be alloyed with Bi2Te3 or form interstitials or dopants to adjust the carrier concentration and mobility. In addition, the metal-semiconductor interface as well as the metal-insulator-semiconductor interface constructed by the introduced metal and Al2O3 would further participate in the regulation of the carrier transport process. By adjusting the metal and oxide layer, it is possible to realize the simultaneous optimization of electric conductivity and Seebeck coefficient. This work will enable the optimal and novel design of heterostructures for thermoelectric materials with further improved performance.

Facile photosynthesis of novel porphyrin-derived nanocomposites containing Ag, Ag/Au, and Ag/Cu for photobactericidal study.

Project description:In this research, the one-step synthesis of novel porphyrin-based nanocomposites was performed easily using a photochemical under visible light illumination strategy. As a result, the focus of this research is on synthesizing and using decorated ZnTPP (zinc(II)tetrakis(4-phenyl)porphyrin) nanoparticles with Ag, Ag/AgCl/Cu, and Au/Ag/AgCl nanostructures as antibacterial agents. Initially, ZnTPP NPs were synthesized as a result of the self-assembly of ZnTPP. In the next step, in a visible-light irradiation photochemically process, the self-assembled ZnTPP nanoparticles were used to make ZnTPP/Ag NCs, ZnTPP/Ag/AgCl/Cu NCs, and ZnTPP/Au/Ag/AgCl NCs. A study on the antibacterial activity of nanocomposites was carried out for Escherichia coli, and Staphylococcus aureus as pathogen microorganisms by the plate count method, well diffusion tests, minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) values determination. Thereafter, the reactive oxygen species (ROS) were determined by the flow cytometry method. All the antibacterial tests and the flow cytometry ROS measurements were carried out under LED light and in dark. The (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay was applied to investigate the cytotoxicity of the ZnTPP/Ag/AgCl/Cu NCs, against Human foreskin fibroblast (HFF-1) normal cells. Due to the specific properties such as admissible photosensitizing properties of porphyrin, mild reaction conditions, high antibacterial properties in the presence of LED light, crystal structure, and green synthesis, these nanocomposites were recognized as kinds of antibacterial materials that are activated in visible light, got the potential for use in a broad range of medical applications, photodynamic therapy, and water treatment.

Cu@Au(Ag)/Pt nanocomposite as peroxidase mimic and application of Cu@Au/Pt in colorimetric detection of glucose and l-cysteine.

Project description:Nanomaterial-based artificial peroxidase has attracted extensive interests due to their distinct advantages over natural counterpart. Cu@Au/Pt and Cu@Ag/Pt nanocomposite with rambutan-like structure were prepared and discovered to function like peroxidase, which was illustrated by catalyzing the oxidation reaction of 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) accompanied with a blue color change. Steady-state investigation indicates that the catalytic kinetics of Cu@Au/Pt and Cu@Ag/Pt all followed typical Michaelis-Menten behaviors and Cu@Au/Pt showed a strong affinity for H2O2, while Cu@Ag/Pt showed strong affinity for TMB. The color change and absorbance intensity strongly depend on the concentration of H2O2, thus the direct determination of H2O2 and indirect detection of glucose were demonstrated using Cu@Au/Pt with a detection limit of 1.5 μM and 6 μM, respectively. What is more important, the method was applied for detection of glucose in 50% fetal bovine serum with a detection limit of 80 μM, which is much lower than the lowest glucose content in blood for diabetes (7 mM). Moreover, the Cu@Au/Pt nanocomposite were also successfully applied for sensing l-cysteine because of the inhibition effect. Considering the good peroxidase-like activity and novel structure, Cu@Au(Ag)/Pt is expected to have a wide range of applications in bioassays and biocatalysis.

A comparative experimental study on the cross-plane thermal conductivities of nano-constructed Sb2Te3/(Cu, Ag, Au, Pt) thermoelectric multilayer thin films.

Project description:Thermoelectric multilayer thin films used in nanoscale energy conversion have been receiving increasing attention in both academic research and industrial applications. Thermal transport across multilayer interface plays a key role in improving thermoelectric conversion efficiency. In this study, the cross-plane thermal conductivities of nano-constructed Sb2Te3/(Cu, Ag, Au, Pt) thermoelectric multilayer thin films have been measured using time-domain thermoreflectance method. The interface morphology features of multilayer thin film samples were characterized by using scanning and transmission electron microscopes. The effects of interface microstructure on the cross-plane thermal conductivities of the multilayer thin films have been extensively examined and the thermal transfer mechanism has been explored. The results indicated that electron-phonon coupling occurred at the semiconductor/metal interface that strongly affected the cross-plane thermal conductivity. By appropriately optimizing the period thickness of the metal layer, the cross-plane thermal conductivity can be effectively reduced, thereby improving the thermoelectric conversion efficiency. This work presents both experimental and theoretical understanding of the thermal transport properties of Sb2Te3/metal multilayer thin film junctions with important implications for exploring a novel approach to improving the thermoelectric conversion efficiency.

Theoretical study of the structures of bimetallic Ag-Au and Cu-Au clusters up to 108 atoms.

Project description:The stable structures of Ag-Au and Cu-Au clusters with 1 : 1, 1 : 3 and 3 : 1 compositions with up to 108 atoms are obtained using a modified adaptive immune optimization algorithm with Gupta potential. The dominant motifs of Ag-Au and Cu-Au clusters are decahedron and icosahedron, respectively. However, in Ag-rich Ag-Au clusters, more icosahedra are found, and in Cu-rich Cu-Au clusters, there exist several decahedral motifs. Four Leary tetrahedral motifs are predicted. CucoreAushell configurations are predicted in Cu-Au clusters. In Ag-Au clusters, most Ag atoms are on the surface, but partial ones are located in the inner shell, while Au atoms are interconnected in the middle shell.

Physical process-aided fabrication of periodic Au-M (M = Ag, Cu, Ag-Cu) alloyed nanoparticle arrays with tunable localized surface plasmon resonance and diffraction peaks.

Project description:Periodic alloyed (Au-Ag, Au-Cu, Au-Ag-Cu) nanoparticle (NP) arrays with uniform size, controllable composition and center-to-center spacing were fabricated by a novel and facile strategy based on physical vapor deposition on a monolayer colloidal crystal template and further heat treatment. The composition and center-to-center spacing were manipulated by adjusting the sputtering target in the deposition process and the size of colloidal spheres of the template, respectively. The shadow effect and a dewetting model were employed to analyze the whole process of evolution from a metallic thin film to spherical nanoparticles with uniform size. The localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) and diffraction peaks of these alloyed arrays were systematically measured. The dielectric constant has an important influence on LSPR peaks and diffraction peaks. Both the LSPR and diffraction peaks of Au-Ag alloyed NPs arrays exhibit a blue shift due to their lower dielectric constant than that of pure Au NPs. However, compared with Au, Cu possesses a higher dielectric constant, leading to a red shift of the LSPR and diffraction peaks of Au-Cu alloyed NPs arrays. With the increase of NP size, the diffraction peaks of both binary alloyed NPs exhibit a slight red shift. Moreover, the LSPR absorption peaks were more sensitive to the composition of the NPs than the diffraction peaks. This work would open up a novel strategy in the production of alloyed NP arrays with tunable LSPR peaks and diffraction peaks, which would be very helpful to improve their practical applications in various fields.

Dirac and Weyl Semimetal in XYBi (X = Ba, Eu; Y = Cu, Ag and Au).

Project description:Weyl and Dirac semimetals recently stimulate intense research activities due to their novel properties. Combining first-principles calculations and effective model analysis, we predict that nonmagnetic compounds BaYBi (Y = Au, Ag and Cu) are Dirac semimetals. As for the magnetic compound EuYBi, although the time reversal symmetry is broken, their long-range magnetic ordering cannot split the Dirac point into pairs of Weyl points. However, we propose that partially substitute Eu ions by Ba ions will realize the Weyl semimetal.

Nearly constant electrical resistance over large temperature range in Cu3NMx (M = Cu, Ag, Au) compounds.

Project description:Electrical resistance is a material property that usually varies enormously with temperature. Constant electrical resistivity over large temperature range has been rarely measured in a single solid. Here we report the growth of Cu3NMx (M = Cu, Ag, Au) compound films by magnetron sputtering, aiming at obtaining single solids of nearly constant electrical resistance in some temperature ranges. The increasing interstitial doping of cubic Cu3N lattice by extra metal atoms induces the semiconductor-to-metal transition in all the three systems. Nearly constant electrical resistance over 200 K, from room temperature downward, was measured in some semimetallic Cu3NMx samples, resulting from opposite temperature dependence of carrier density and carrier mobility, as revealed by Hall measurement. Cu3NAgx samples have the best performance with regard to the range of both temperature and doping level wherein a nearly constant electrical resistance can be realized. This work can inspire the search of other materials of such a quality.
