Bottom-Up (Cu, Ag, Au)/Al2O3/Bi2Te3 Assembled Thermoelectric Heterostructures.

ABSTRACT: The interface affects the transmission behavior of electrons and phonons, which in turn determines the performance of thermoelectric materials. In this paper, metals (Cu, Ag, Au)/Al2O3/Bi2Te3 heterostructures have been fabricated from bottom to up to optimize the thermoelectric power factor. The introducing metals can be alloyed with Bi2Te3 or form interstitials or dopants to adjust the carrier concentration and mobility. In addition, the metal-semiconductor interface as well as the metal-insulator-semiconductor interface constructed by the introduced metal and Al2O3 would further participate in the regulation of the carrier transport process. By adjusting the metal and oxide layer, it is possible to realize the simultaneous optimization of electric conductivity and Seebeck coefficient. This work will enable the optimal and novel design of heterostructures for thermoelectric materials with further improved performance.

Epitaxially Integrated Hierarchical ZnO/Au/SrTiO3 and ZnO/Ag/Al2O3 Heterostructures: Three-Dimensional Plasmo-Photonic Nanoarchitecturing.

Project description:In this study, we fabricated three-dimensional (3D) hierarchical plasmo-photonic nanoarchitectures by epitaxially integrating semiconducting zinc oxide (ZnO) nanowires with vertically oriented plasmonic gold (Au) and silver (Ag) nanoplatforms and investigated their growth mechanisms in detail. We synthesized 3D hierarchical Au-ZnO nanostructures via a vapor-solid mechanism leading to the epitaxial growth of ZnO nanowires on vertically oriented single-crystalline Au nanowires on a strontium titanate (SrTiO3) substrate. The elongated half-octahedral Au nanowires with a rhombus cross-section were transformed into thermodynamically stable elongated cuboctahedral Au nanowires with a hexagonal cross-section during the reaction. After the transformation, ZnO thin films with six twinned domains were formed on the side planes of the elongated cuboctahedral Au nanowire trunks, and six ZnO nanowire branches were grown on the ZnO thin films. Further, 3D hierarchical Ag-ZnO nanostructures were obtained via the same vapor-solid mechanism leading to the epitaxial growth of ZnO nanowires on vertically oriented Ag nanoplates on an aluminum oxide (Al2O3) substrate. Therefore, the growth mechanism developed herein can be generally employed to fabricate 3D hierarchical plasmo-photonic nanoarchitectures.

Ligand-Mediated Band Engineering in Bottom-Up Assembled SnTe Nanocomposites for Thermoelectric Energy Conversion.

Project description:The bottom-up assembly of colloidal nanocrystals is a versatile methodology to produce composite nanomaterials with precisely tuned electronic properties. Beyond the synthetic control over crystal domain size, shape, crystal phase, and composition, solution-processed nanocrystals allow exquisite surface engineering. This provides additional means to modulate the nanomaterial characteristics and particularly its electronic transport properties. For instance, inorganic surface ligands can be used to tune the type and concentration of majority carriers or to modify the electronic band structure. Herein, we report the thermoelectric properties of SnTe nanocomposites obtained from the consolidation of surface-engineered SnTe nanocrystals into macroscopic pellets. A CdSe-based ligand is selected to (i) converge the light and heavy bands through partial Cd alloying and (ii) generate CdSe nanoinclusions as a secondary phase within the SnTe matrix, thereby reducing the thermal conductivity. These SnTe-CdSe nanocomposites possess thermoelectric figures of merit of up to 1.3 at 850 K, which is, to the best of our knowledge, the highest thermoelectric figure of merit reported for solution-processed SnTe.

Ultrathin MEMS thermoelectric generator with Bi2Te3/(Pt, Au) multilayers and Sb2Te3 legs.

Project description:Multilayer structure is one of the research focuses of thermoelectric (TE) material in recent years. In this work, n-type 800 nm Bi2Te3/(Pt, Au) multilayers are designed with p-type Sb2Te3 legs to fabricate ultrathin microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) TE devices. The power factor of the annealed Bi2Te3/Pt multilayer reaches 46.5 μW cm-1 K-2 at 303 K, which corresponds to more than a 350% enhancement when compared to pristine Bi2Te3. The annealed Bi2Te3/Au multilayers have a lower power factor than pristine Bi2Te3. The power of the device with Sb2Te3 and Bi2Te3/Pt multilayers measures 20.9 nW at 463 K and the calculated maximum output power reaches 10.5 nW, which is 39.5% higher than the device based on Sb2Te3 and Bi2Te3, and 96.7% higher than the Sb2Te3 and Bi2Te3/Au multilayers one. This work can provide an opportunity to improve TE properties by using multilayer structures and novel ultrathin MEMS TE devices in a wide variety of applications.

Theoretical study of the structures of bimetallic Ag-Au and Cu-Au clusters up to 108 atoms.

Project description:The stable structures of Ag-Au and Cu-Au clusters with 1 : 1, 1 : 3 and 3 : 1 compositions with up to 108 atoms are obtained using a modified adaptive immune optimization algorithm with Gupta potential. The dominant motifs of Ag-Au and Cu-Au clusters are decahedron and icosahedron, respectively. However, in Ag-rich Ag-Au clusters, more icosahedra are found, and in Cu-rich Cu-Au clusters, there exist several decahedral motifs. Four Leary tetrahedral motifs are predicted. CucoreAushell configurations are predicted in Cu-Au clusters. In Ag-Au clusters, most Ag atoms are on the surface, but partial ones are located in the inner shell, while Au atoms are interconnected in the middle shell.

Bottom-Up Synthesis of SnTe-Based Thermoelectric Composites.

Project description:There is a need for the development of lead-free thermoelectric materials for medium-/high-temperature applications. Here, we report a thiol-free tin telluride (SnTe) precursor that can be thermally decomposed to produce SnTe crystals with sizes ranging from tens to several hundreds of nanometers. We further engineer SnTe-Cu2SnTe3 nanocomposites with a homogeneous phase distribution by decomposing the liquid SnTe precursor containing a dispersion of Cu1.5Te colloidal nanoparticles. The presence of Cu within the SnTe and the segregated semimetallic Cu2SnTe3 phase effectively improves the electrical conductivity of SnTe while simultaneously reducing the lattice thermal conductivity without compromising the Seebeck coefficient. Overall, power factors up to 3.63 mW m-1 K-2 and thermoelectric figures of merit up to 1.04 are obtained at 823 K, which represent a 167% enhancement compared with pristine SnTe.

Au-Ag-Cu nano-alloys: tailoring of permittivity.

Project description:Precious metal alloys enables new possibilities to tailor materials for specific optical functions. Here we present a systematic study of the effects of a nanoscale alloying on the permittivity of Au-Ag-Cu metals at 38 different atomic mixing ratios. The permittivity was measured and analyzed numerically by applying the Drude model. X-ray diffraction (XRD) revealed the face centered cubic lattice of the alloys. Both, optical spectra and XRD results point towards an equivalent composition-dependent electron scattering behavior. Correlation between the fundamental structural parameters of alloys and the resulting optical properties is elucidated. Plasmonic properties of the Au-Ag-Cu alloy nanoparticles were investigated by numerical simulations. Guidelines for designing plasmonic response of nano- structures and their patterns are presented from the material science perspective.

Cross-plane Thermoelectric and Thermionic Transport across Au/h-BN/Graphene Heterostructures.

Project description:The thermoelectric voltage generated at an atomically abrupt interface has not been studied exclusively because of the lack of established measurement tools and techniques. Atomically thin 2D materials provide an excellent platform for studying the thermoelectric transport at these interfaces. Here, we report a novel technique and device structure to probe the thermoelectric transport across Au/h-BN/graphene heterostructures. An indium tin oxide (ITO) transparent electrical heater is patterned on top of this heterostructure, enabling Raman spectroscopy and thermometry to be obtained from the graphene top electrode in situ under device operating conditions. Here, an AC voltage V(ω) is applied to the ITO heater and the thermoelectric voltage across the Au/h-BN/graphene heterostructure is measured at 2ω using a lock-in amplifier. We report the Seebeck coefficient for our thermoelectric structure to be -215 μV/K. The Au/graphene/h-BN heterostructures enable us to explore thermoelectric and thermal transport on nanometer length scales in a regime of extremely short length scales. The thermoelectric voltage generated at the graphene/h-BN interface is due to thermionic emission rather than bulk diffusive transport. As such, this should be thought of as an interfacial Seebeck coefficient rather than a Seebeck coefficient of the constituent materials.

Catalytic Application and Mechanism Studies of Argentic Chloride Coupled Ag/Au Hollow Heterostructures: Considering the Interface Between Ag/Au Bimetals.

Project description:For an economical use of solar energy, photocatalysts that are sufficiently efficient, stable, and capable of harvesting light are required. Composite heterostructures composed of noble metals and semiconductors exhibited the excellent in catalytic application. Here, 1D Ag/Au/AgCl hollow heterostructures are synthesized by galvanic replacement reaction (GRR) from Ag nanowires (NWs). The catalytic properties of these as-obtained Ag/Au/AgCl hollow heterostructures with different ratios are investigated by reducing 4-nitrophenol (Nip) into 4-aminophenol (Amp) in the presence of NaBH4, and the influence of AgCl semiconductor to the catalytic performances of Ag/Au bimetals is also investigated. These hollow heterostructures show the higher catalytic properties than pure Ag NWs, and the AgCl not only act as supporting materials, but the excess AgCl is also the obstacle for contact of Ag/Au bimetals with reactive species. Moreover, the photocatalytic performances of these hollow heterostructures are carried out by degradation of acid orange 7 (AO7) under UV and visible light. These Ag/Au/AgCl hollow heterostructures present the higher photocatalytic activities than pure Ag NWs and commercial TiO2 (P25), and the Ag/Au bimetals enhance the photocatalytic activity of AgCl semiconductor via the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) and plasmon resonance energy transfer (PRET) mechanisms. The as-synthesized 1D Ag/Au/AgCl hollow heterostructures with multifunction could apply in practical environmental remedy by catalytic manners.

Effect of the Electronic State of Cu, Ag, and Au on Diesel Soot Abatement: Performance of Cu/ZnO, Ag/ZnO, and Au/ZnO Catalysts.

Project description:Noble metals such as Au, Ag, and Cu supported over semiconducting ZnO are well-known heterogeneous oxidation catalysts. All of them have been utilized for the oxidation of diesel soot with varied success. However, Au-supported ZnO is seen to be superior among them. Here, we present a comparative study of all these three catalysts for diesel soot oxidation to explain why Au/ZnO is the best among them, demonstrating the contribution of electronic states of metals in composite catalysts. The electronic states of Cu, Ag, and Au determined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy on 1 wt % Cu/ZnO, 1 wt % Ag/ZnO, and 1 wt % Au/ZnO catalysts were correlated with their diesel soot oxidation activities. Although all three catalysts present reasonable diesel soot oxidation activities at relatively low temperature, 1% Cu/ZnO and 1% Ag/ZnO oxidize only about 60% of the deposited diesel soot around 250 °C and 1% Au/ZnO oxidizes 100% of the deposited diesel soot, at a temperature as low as 230 °C. The activity of the catalysts is attributed to the formation of stable M0-Mδ+ bifunctional catalytic sites at the metal-ZnO interface, which enhances the contact efficiency of solid diesel soot on Mδ+ and generates the superoxide species on M0 moieties. The stability of the bifunctional M0-Mδ+ sites is controlled by the electronic interactions between the metal (M) and n-type semiconductor ZnO at their interface. Very high activity of 1% Au/ZnO is attributed to the presence of Au3+ at the catalyst surface, which generates a stronger Coulombic force with diesel soot electrons. We demonstrate a direct relation between the diesel soot oxidation activity of these three metals and their electronic states at the catalyst surface.

Interface Dynamics in Ag-Cu3P Nanoparticle Heterostructures.

Project description:Earth-abundant transition metal phosphides are promising materials for energy-related applications. Specifically, copper(I) phosphide is such a material and shows excellent photocatalytic activity. Currently, there are substantial research efforts to synthesize well-defined metal-semiconductor nanoparticle heterostructures to enhance the photocatalytic performance by an efficient separation of charge carriers. The involved crystal facets and heterointerfaces have a major impact on the efficiency of a heterostructured photocatalyst, which points out the importance of synthesizing potential photocatalysts in a controlled manner and characterizing their structural and morphological properties in detail. In this study, we investigated the interface dynamics occurring around the synthesis of Ag-Cu3P nanoparticle heterostructures by a chemical reaction between Ag-Cu nanoparticle heterostructures and phosphine in an environmental transmission electron microscope. The major product of the Cu-Cu3P phase transformation using Ag-Cu nanoparticle heterostructures with a defined interface as a template preserved the initially present Ag{111} facet of the heterointerface. After the complete transformation, corner truncation of the faceted Cu3P phase led to a physical transformation of the nanoparticle heterostructure. In some cases, the structural rearrangement toward an energetically more favorable heterointerface has been observed and analyzed in detail at the atomic level. The herein-reported results will help better understand dynamic processes in Ag-Cu3P nanoparticle heterostructures and enable facet-engineered surface and heterointerface design to tailor their physical properties.
