A Toolbox for Controlling the Energetics and Localization of Electronic States in Self-Assembled Organic Monolayers.

ABSTRACT: Controlling the nature of the electronic states within organic layers holds the promise of truly molecular electronics. To achieve that we, here, develop a modular concept for a versatile tuning of electronic properties in organic monolayers and their interfaces. The suggested strategy relies on directly exploiting collective electrostatic effects, which emerge naturally in an ensemble of polar molecules. By means of quantum-mechanical modeling we show that in this way monolayer-based quantum-cascades and quantum-well structures can be realized, which allow a precise control of the local electronic structure and the localization of electronic states. Extending that concept, we furthermore discuss strategies for activating spin sensitivity in specific regions of an organic monolayer.

The electronic structure of mixed self-assembled monolayers.

Project description:The electronic structure of mixed self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on Au(111) surfaces is modeled using slab-type density-functional theory calculations. The studied molecules have a dipolar character induced by polar and electron donating or accepting tail-group substituents. The resulting electronic structure of mixed layers is found to differ qualitatively from a simple superposition of those of the respective pure layers. Specifically, the positions of the frontier electronic states are shifted relative to the metal Fermi level, with the sign and magnitude of that shift depending on the dipole moment of the molecules and the mixing ratio in the film. This appears counterintuitive considering previous investigations, in which it has been shown that, for densely packed layers, tail-group substituents have no impact on the interfacial energy-level alignment. The seeming contradiction can be lifted by considering the local electrostatic interactions within the films in both mixed and homogeneous monolayers. Beyond that, we show that mixed SAMs provide an efficient tool for continuously tuning substrate work functions over a range that far exceeds that accessible by merely changing the coverage of homogeneous layers, with the net effect depending linearly on the mixing ratio in agreement with recent experimental findings.

Reversible Self-Assembled Monolayers with Tunable Surface Dynamics for Controlling Cell Adhesion Behavior.

Project description:Cells adhering onto surfaces sense and respond to chemical and physical surface features. The control over cell adhesion behavior influences cell migration, proliferation, and differentiation, which are important considerations in biomaterial design for cell culture, tissue engineering, and regenerative medicine. Here, we report on a supramolecular-based approach to prepare reversible self-assembled monolayers (rSAMs) with tunable lateral mobility and dynamic control over surface composition to regulate cell adhesion behavior. These layers were prepared by incubating oxoacid-terminated thiol SAMs on gold in a pH 8 HEPES buffer solution containing different mole fractions of ω-(ethylene glycol)2-4- and ω-(GRGDS)-, α-benzamidino bolaamphiphiles. Cell shape and morphology were influenced by the strength of the interactions between the amidine-functionalized amphiphiles and the oxoacid of the underlying SAMs. Dynamic control over surface composition, achieved by the addition of inert filler amphiphiles to the RGD-functionalized rSAMs, reversed the cell adhesion process. In summary, rSAMs featuring mobile bioactive ligands offer unique capabilities to influence and control cell adhesion behavior, suggesting a broad use in biomaterial design, tissue engineering, and regenerative medicine.

Advanced Nonvolatile Organic Optical Memory Using Self-Assembled Monolayers of Porphyrin-Fullerene Dyads.

Project description:Photo-switchable organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) represent an important platform for designing memory devices for a diverse array of products including security (brand-protection, copy-protection, keyless entry, etc.), credit cards, tickets, and multiple wearable organic electronics applications. Herein, we present a new concept by introducing self-assembled monolayers of donor-acceptor porphyrin-fullerene dyads as light-responsive triggers modulating the electrical characteristics of OFETs and thus pave the way to the development of advanced nonvolatile optical memory. The devices demonstrated wide memory windows, high programming speeds, and long retention times. Furthermore, we show a remarkable effect of the orientation of the fullerene-polymer dyads at the dielectric/semiconductor interface on the device behavior. In particular, the dyads anchored to the dielectric by the porphyrin part induced a reversible photoelectrical switching of OFETs, which is characteristic of flash memory elements. On the contrary, the devices utilizing the dyad anchored by the fullerene moiety demonstrated irreversible switching, thus operating as read-only memory (ROM). A mechanism explaining this behavior is proposed using theoretical DFT calculations. The results suggest the possibility of revisiting hundreds of known donor-acceptor dyads designed previously for artificial photosynthesis or other purposes as versatile optical triggers in advanced OFET-based multibit memory devices for emerging electronic applications.

Impact of the TCO Microstructure on the Electronic Properties of Carbazole-Based Self-Assembled Monolayers.

Project description:Carbazole-based self-assembled monolayers (PACz-SAMs), anchored via their phosphonic acid group on a transparent conductive oxide (TCO), have demonstrated excellent performance as hole-selective layers in perovskite/silicon tandem solar cells. Yet, whereas different PACz-SAMs have been explored, the role of the TCO, and specifically its microstructure, on the hole transport properties of the TCO/PACz-SAMs stack has been largely overlooked. Here, we demonstrate that the TCO microstructure directly impacts the work function (WF) shift after SAM anchoring and is responsible for WF variations at the micro/nanoscale. Specifically, we studied Sn-doped In2O3 (ITO) substrates with amorphous and polycrystalline (featuring either nanoscale- or microscale-sized grains) microstructures before and after 2PACz-SAMs and NiOx/2PACz-SAMs anchoring. With this, we established a direct correlation between the ITO crystal grain orientation and 2PACz-SAMs local potential distribution, i.e., the WF. Importantly, these variations vanish for amorphous oxides (either in the form of amorphous ITO or when adding an amorphous NiOx buffer layer), where a homogeneous surface potential distribution is found. These findings highlight the importance of TCO microstructure tuning, to enable both high mobility and broadband transparent electrodes while ensuring uniform WF distribution upon application of hole transport SAMs, both critical for enhanced device performance.

Effect of Anode Interfacial Modification by Self-Assembled Monolayers on the Organic Solar Cell Performance.

Project description:A series of self-assembled monolayer (SAM)-based benzoic acid derivatives such as 4-[5'-phenyl-2,2'-bitien-5-yl] benzoic acid (ZE-Ph), 4-[5'-(4-fluorophenyl)-2,2'-bitien-5-yl]benzoic acid (ZE-1F), and 4-[5'-(3,5-difluorophenyl)-2,2'-bitien-5-yl]benzoic acid (ZE-2F) were synthesized to use an interlayer between an ITO electrode and a MoO3 thin film layer in an organic solar cell (OSC) having poly-3 hexylthiophene (P3HT): [6,6]-phenyl C61 butyric acid methyl ester (PC61BM) blend. The work function and surface wetting properties of the ITO were tuned by SAM molecules. The power conversion efficiency of fabricated OSC devices was improved compared to that of the control device from 1.93 to 2.20% and 2.22% with ZE-Ph and ZE-1F-modified ITO electrodes, respectively. The short-circuit current density (Jsc) was increased from 6.16 to 7.10 mA/cm2 and 6.94 mA/cm2 with control, ZE-Ph, and ZE-1F-modified solar cells, respectively. The increase in short-circuit current density (Jsc) shows that the hole-transporting properties between ITO and MoO3 were improved by the use of ZE-Ph and ZE-1F compared with that of the ITO/MoO3 electrode configuration. The open-circuit voltage (Voc) of the SAM-modified ITO-based devices was also improved compared with the Voc of unmodified ITO-based devices. These results show that using a monolayer as an interlayer in OSCs is an important strategy to improve the performance of OSCs. All the device parameters were characterized by Kelvin probe force microscopy, cyclic voltammetry, contact angle, and I-V measurements.

Understanding Chemical versus Electrostatic Shifts in X-ray Photoelectron Spectra of Organic Self-Assembled Monolayers.

Project description:The focus of the present article is on understanding the insight that X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements can provide when studying self-assembled monolayers. Comparing density functional theory calculations to experimental data on deliberately chosen model systems, we show that both the chemical environment and electrostatic effects arising from a superposition of molecular dipoles influence the measured core-level binding energies to a significant degree. The crucial role of the often overlooked electrostatic effects in polar self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) is unambiguously demonstrated by changing the dipole density through varying the SAM coverage. As a consequence of this effect, care has to be taken when extracting chemical information from the XP spectra of ordered organic adsorbate layers. Our results, furthermore, imply that XPS is a powerful tool for probing local variations in the electrostatic energy in nanoscopic systems, especially in SAMs.

Thiol Carbazole Self-Assembled Monolayers as Tunable Carrier Injecting Interlayers for Organic Transistors and Complementary Circuits.

Project description:The significant contact resistance at the metal-semiconductor interface is a well-documented issue for organic thin-film transistors (OTFTs) that hinders device and circuit performance. Here, this issue is tackled by developing three new thiol carbazole-based self-assembled monolayer (SAM) molecules, namely tBu-2SCz, 2SCz, and Br-2SCz, and utilizing them as carrier-selective injection interlayers. The SAMs alter the work function of gold electrodes by more than 1 eV, making them suitable for use in hole and electron-transporting OTFTs. Scanning tunneling microscopy analysis indicates that 2SCz and Br-2SCz form highly ordered molecular rows, resulting in work function values of 4.86 and 5.48 eV, respectively. The latter value is higher than gold electrodes modified by the commonly used pentafluorobenzenethiol (≈5.33 eV), making Br-2SCz promising for hole injection. Conversely, tBu-2SCz appears disordered with a lower work function of 4.52 eV, making it more suitable for electron injection. These intriguing properties are leveraged to demonstrate hole- and electron-transporting OTFTs with improved operating characteristics. All-organic complementary inverters are finally demonstrated by integrating p- and n-channel OTFTs, showcasing the potential of this simple yet powerful contact work function engineering approach. The present study highlights the versatility of thiol carbazole SAMs as carrier injecting interlayers for OTFTs and integrated circuits.

Controlling the adsorption of osteopontin for mediating cell behaviour by using self-assembled monolayers with varying surface chemistry.

Project description:Osteopontin (OPN) is an important protein for mediating cell behaviour on biomaterials. However, the interactions between the chemical groups on the biomaterial surface and OPN still need to be further clarified, which has restricted the application of OPN in biomaterial functionalization. In the present study, we developed different self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) with specific chemical groups, including SAMs-OH, SAMs-OEG, SAMs-COOH, SAMs-NH2, and SAMs-PO3H2, to study the behavior of OPN on these SAMs. The results showed that SAMs-NH2 could strongly adsorb OPN, and the amount of protein was highest on this material. Meanwhile, the lowest amount of OPN was present on SAMs-OEG. Interestingly, the unit-mass trend of bound OPN monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) on the SAMs was opposite to the OPN adsorption trend: lowest on SAMs-NH2 but highest on SAMs-OEG. In vitro cell assay results showed that mouse bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (mBMSCs) on SAMs-COOH, SAMs-NH2, and SAMs-PO3H2 with pre-adsorbed OPN showed promoted behaviour, in terms of spreading, viability, and the expression levels of αv and β3 genes, compared with the other two SAMs, demonstrating the higher bioactivity of the adsorbed OPN. We believe that our findings will have great potential for developing OPN-activated biomaterials.

Mesoionic carbene-based self-assembled monolayers on gold.

Project description:N-Heterocyclic carbenes (NHC) have been widely studied as ligands for surface chemistry, and have shown advantages compared to existing ligands (e.g. thiols). Herein, we introduce mesoionic carbenes (MICs) as a new type of surface ligand. MICs exhibit higher σ-donor ability compared to typical NHCs, yet they have received little attention in the area of surface chemistry. The synthesis of MICs derived from imidazo[1,2-a]pyridine was established and fully characterized by spectroscopic methods. The self-assembly of these MICs on gold was analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Additionally, XPS was used to compare bonding ability in MICs compared to the typical NHCs. These results show that MIC overlayers on gold are robust, resistant to replacement by NHCs, and may be superior to NHCs for applications that require even greater levels of robustness.
