Experimental data of inorganic gel based smart window using silica sol-gel process.

ABSTRACT: In this article experimental data are presented for inorganic gel based smart window fabricated using silica sol-gel process. Parallel beam transmittances were measured as functions of voltages for samples fabricated with different concentrations of nitric acid. Spectroscopic transmittance data at different driving voltages for samples fabricated with different LC concentrations are shown. Transmittance spectra of the Si-Ti based gel-based-liquid-crystal (GDLC) device measured as different driving voltages were compared with those of PDLC. GDLC showed much lower operating voltages, 10-15 V, for on-state. Formation of the LC droplet in gelation process is illustrated. The methyl organic group surrounds LC droplets. Demonstration of GDLC based smart window showed the successful operation with low driving voltages. GDLC window shows clear color, even at off-state, compared with PDLC.

Physicochemical Characterization and Drug Release Properties of Methyl-Substituted Silica Xerogels Made Using Sol-Gel Process.

Project description:In this work, a multi-analytical approach involving nitrogen porosimetry, small angle neutron and X-ray scattering, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopies, X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis and electron microscopy was applied to organically modified silica-based xerogels obtained through the sol-gel process. Starting from a tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) precursor, methyltriethoxysilane (MTES) was added to the reaction mixture at two different pH values (2.0 and 4.5) producing hybrid xerogels with different TEOS/MTES molar ratios. Significant differences in the structure were revealed in terms of the chemical composition of the silica network, hydrophilic/hydrophobic profile, particle dimension, pore shape/size and surface characteristics. The combined use of structural characterization methods allowed us to reveal a relation between the cavity dimensions, the synthesis pH value and the grade of methyl substitution. The effect of the structural properties on the controlled Captopril release efficiency has also been tested. This knowledge facilitates tailoring the pore network for specific usage in biological/medical applications. Knowledge on structural aspects, as reported in this work, represents a key starting point for the production of high-performance silica-based hybrid materials showing enhanced efficacy compared to bare silica prepared using only TEOS.

Inorganic Sol-Gel Polymerization for Hydrogel Bioprinting.

Project description:An inorganic sol-gel polymerization process was used as a cross-linking reaction during three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting of cell-containing hydrogel scaffolds. Hybrid hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose (HPMC), with a controlled ratio of silylation, was prepared and isolated as a 3D-network precursor. When dissolved in a biological buffer containing human mesenchymal stem cells, it yields a bioink that can be printed during polymerization by extrusion. It is worth noting that the sol-gel process proceeded at pH 7.4 using biocompatible mode of catalysis (NaF and glycine). The printing window was determined by rheology and viscosity measurements. The physicochemical properties of hydrogels were studied. Covalent functionalization of the network can be easily performed by adding a triethoxysilyl-containing molecule; a fluorescent hybrid molecule was used as a proof of concept.

Fast nucleation for silica nanoparticle synthesis using a sol-gel method.

Project description:We have developed a method that for the first time allowed us to synthesize silica particles in 20 minutes using a sol-gel preparation. Therefore, it is critically important to understand the synthesis mechanism and kinetic behavior in order to achieve a higher degree of fine tuning ability during the synthesis. In this study, we have employed our ability to modulate the physical nature of the reaction medium from sol-gel to emulsion, which has allowed us to halt the reaction at a particular time; this has allowed us to precisely understand the mechanism and chemistry of the silica polymerization. The synthesis medium is kept quite simple with tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) as a precursor in an equi-volumetric ethanol-water system and with sodium hydroxide as a catalyst. Synthesis is performed under ambient conditions at 20 °C for 20 minutes followed by phasing out of any unreacted TEOS and polysilicic acid chains via their emulsification with supersaturated water. We have also demonstrated that the developed particles with various sizes can be used as seeds for further particle growth and other applications. Luminol, a chemiluminescent molecule, has been entrapped successfully between the layers of silica and was demonstrated for the chemiluminescence of these particles.

Sol-Gel-Controlled Size and Morphology of Mesoporous Silica Microspheres Using Hard Templates.

Project description:Mesoporous silica microspheres (MPSMs) represent a promising material as a stationary phase for HPLC separations. The use of hard templates provides a preparation strategy for producing such monodisperse silica microspheres. Here, 15 MPSMs were systematically synthesized by varying the sol-gel reaction parameters of water-to-precursor ratio and ammonia concentration in the presence of a porous p(GMA-co-EDMA) polymeric hard template. Changing the sol-gel process factors resulted in a wide range of MPSMs with varying particle sizes from smaller than one to several micrometers. The application of response surface methodology allowed to derive quantitative predictive models based on the process factor effects on particle size, pore size, pore volume, and specific surface area of the MPSMs. A narrow size distribution of the silica particles was maintained over the entire experimental space. Two larger-scale batches of MPSMs were prepared, and the particles were functionalized with trimethoxy(octadecyl) silane for the application as stationary phase in reversed-phases liquid chromatography. The separation of proteins and amino acids was successfully accomplished, and the effect of the pore properties of the silica particles on separation was demonstrated.

On the unusual amber coloration of nanoporous sol-gel processed Al-doped silica glass: An experimental study.

Project description:Silica is the most abundant component on the earth's surface. It plays an important role in many natural processes. Silica is also a critical material for a wide range of technical applications such as in optics and electronics. In this work, we discuss our recent experimental observation of the unusual amber coloration of aluminum doped sol-gel glass that has not been reported in the past. We characterized Al-doped sol-gel glasses, prepared at different sintering temperature, using a plethora of techniques to investigate the origin of this unusual coloration and to understand their structural and chemical properties. We used these experimental results to test a number of possible coloring mechanisms. The results suggested this coloring is likely caused by temperature-dependent aluminum-associated defect centers associated with different amorphous-to-crystalline ratios of the annealed sol-gel silica glass structures.

Silica nanolayer coated capillary by hydrothermal sol-gel process for amines separation and detection of tyramine in food products.

Project description:A hydrothermal sol-gel method for reproducible formation of silica nanolayer on the wall of silica capillaries was developed for electrochromatography. The formulation was optimized by observation of uniform gel formation on an optical microscope. The variables of the formulation include types of solvent, water-TEOS ratio, CTAB and urea contents, and mixing method. The procedure produced a coating of silica ca. 100 nm thick layer on the wall of the capillary. Surface morphology of the coating was characterized by SEM, contact angle and chemical composition by FT-IR spectroscopy and X-ray powder diffraction. The coating reduced the electroosmotic mobility producing enhanced separation performance. Eight standard amines (including tyramine and benzhydrylamine, as an internal standard) were separated with peak resolution Rs ≥ 2 for all adjacent peaks and plate number N ≥ 3.0 × 104 m-1. Calibration was linear from 5 to 200 µg L-1, with r2 > 0.9985 and instrumental LOD of 4.9 μg L-1. Five samples of food products were diluted and analyzed for the amines using the coated capillary and only tyramine was detected. Intra-day and inter-day precisions were less than 1.2%RSD. Percent recoveries of spiked tyramine in samples were 95 ± 3 to 106 ± 7% (n = 3).

Fumed Silica-Based Ultra-High-Purity Synthetic Quartz Powder via Sol-Gel Process for Advanced Semiconductor Process beyond Design Rule of 3 nm.

Project description:Fumed silica-based ultra-high-purity synthetic quartz powder was developed via the sol-gel process to apply to quartz wares and quartz crucibles for use in advanced semiconductor processes. The process conditions of preparing potassium silicate solution, gelation, and cleaning were optimized, i.e., the relative ratio of fumed silica (10 wt%) to KOH (4 wt%) for potassium silicate solution, gelation time 3 h, and cleaning for 1 h with 5 wt% HCl solution. It was observed that the gelation time strongly affected the size distribution of the quartz powder; i.e., a longer gelation time led to a larger size (d50) of the synthesized quartz powder: 157 μm for 2 h and 331 μm for 5 h. In particular, it was found that the morphology of the as-synthesized quartz powder greatly depended on the pulverizing process; i.e., the shape of quartz powder was shown to be rod-shaped for the without-gel-pulverizing process and granular-shaped with the process. We expect that the fumed silica-based ultra-high-purity quartz powder with an impurity level of 74.1 ppb synthesized via the sol-gel process is applicable as a raw material for quartz wares and crucibles for advanced semiconductor processes beyond the design rule of 3 nm.

Functionalizing silica sol-gel with entrapped plant virus-based immunosorbent nanoparticles.

Project description:Advancements in understanding and engineering of virus-based nanomaterials (VBNs) for biomedical applications motivate a need to explore the interfaces between VBNs and other biomedically-relevant chemistries and materials. While several strategies have been used to investigate some of these interfaces with promising initial results, including VBN-containing slow-release implants and VBN-activated bioceramic bone scaffolds, there remains a need to establish VBN-immobilized three dimensional materials that exhibit improved stability and diffusion characteristics for biosensing and other analyte-capture applications. Silica sol-gel chemistries have been researched for biomedical applications over several decades and are well understood; various cellular organisms and biomolecules (e.g., bacteria, algae, enzymes) have been immobilized in silica sol-gels to improve viability, activity, and form factor (i.e., ease of use). Here we present the immobilization of an antibody-binding VBN in silica sol-gel by pore confinement. We have shown that the resulting system is sufficiently diffuse to allow antibodies to migrate in and out of the matrix. We also show that the immobilized VBN is capable of antibody binding and elution functionality under different buffer conditions for multiple use cycles. The promising results of the VBN and silica sol-gel interface indicate a general applicability for VBN-based bioseparations and biosensing applications.

Affinity of Electrochemically Deposited Sol⁻Gel Silica Films towards Catecholamine Neurotransmitters.

Project description:Dopamine, norepinephrine, and epinephrine neurotransmitters can be detected by electrochemical oxidation in conventional electrodes. However, their similar chemical structure and electrochemical behavior makes a difficult selective analysis. In the present work, glassy carbon electrodes have been modified with silica layers, which were prepared by electroassisted deposition of sol⁻gel precursors. These layers were morphologically and compositionally characterized using different techniques, such as field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), TEM, FTIR, or thermogravimetric analysis⁻mass spectrometry (TG-MS). The affinity of silica for neurotransmitters was evaluated, exclusively, by means of electrochemical methods. It was demonstrated that silica adsorbs dopamine, norepinephrine, and epinephrine, showing different interaction with silica pores. The adsorption process is dominated by a hydrogen bond between silanol groups located at the silica surface and the amine groups of neurotransmitters. Because of the different interaction with neurotransmitters, electrodes modified with silica films could be used in electrochemical sensors for the selective detection of such molecules.

Advanced sol-gel process for efficient heterogeneous ring-closing metathesis.

Project description:Olefin metathesis, a powerful synthetic method with numerous practical applications, can be improved by developing heterogeneous catalysts that can be recycled. In this study, a single-stage process for the entrapment of ruthenium-based catalysts was developed by the sol-gel process. System effectiveness was quantified by measuring the conversion of the ring-closing metathesis reaction of the substrate diethyl diallylmalonate and the leakage of the catalysts from the matrix. The results indicate that the nature of the precursor affects pore size and catalyst activity. Moreover, matrices prepared with tetraethoxysilane at an alkaline pH exhibit a better reaction rate than in the homogenous system under certain reaction conditions. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to present a one-step process that is simpler and faster than the methods reported in the literature for catalyst entrapment by the sol-gel process under standard conditions.
