ABSTRACT: Voltage-activated proton (Hv1) channels are relatives of classical voltage-activated cation channels. In this issue of Neuron, Hong et al. (2013) and Qiu et al. (2013) investigate the functional mechanisms of Hv1 gating and uncover key relationships with Kv channels.
