Preparation of g-C?N?/Graphene Composite for Detecting NO? at Room Temperature.

ABSTRACT: Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C?N?) nanosheets were exfoliated from bulk g-C?N? and utilized to improve the sensing performance of a pure graphene sensor for the first time. The role of hydrochloric acid treatment on the exfoliation result was carefully examined. The exfoliated products were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and UV-Vis spectroscopy. The exfoliated g-C?N? nanosheets exhibited a uniform thickness of about 3-5 nm and a lateral size of about 1-2 µm. A g-C?N?/graphene nanocomposite was prepared via a self-assembly process and was demonstrated to be a promising sensing material for detecting nitrogen dioxide gas at room temperature. The nanocomposite sensor exhibited better recovery as well as two-times the response compared to pure graphene sensor. The detailed sensing mechanism was then proposed.

Room-temperature magnetic ordering in functionalized graphene.

Project description:Despite theoretical predictions, the question of room-temperature magnetic order in graphene must be conclusively resolved before graphene can fully achieve its potential as a spintronic medium. Through scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and point I-V measurements, the current study reveals that unlike pristine samples, graphene nanostructures, when functionalized with aryl radicals, can sustain magnetic order. STM images show 1-D and 2-D periodic super-lattices originating from the functionalization of a single sub-lattice of the bipartite graphene structure. Field-dependent super-lattices in 3-nm wide "zigzag" nanoribbons indicate local moments with parallel and anti-parallel ordering along and across the edges, respectively. Anti-parallel ordering is observed in 2-D segments with sizes of over 20 nm. The field dependence of STM images and point I-V curves indicates a spin polarized local density of states (LDOS), an out-of-plane anisotropy field of less than 10 Oe, and an exchange coupling field of 100 Oe at room temperature.

Chemoresistive Room-Temperature Sensing of Ammonia Using Zeolite Imidazole Framework and Reduced Graphene Oxide (ZIF-67/rGO) Composite.

Project description:The present work demonstrates the application of a composite of the zeolite imidazole framework (ZIF-67) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO), synthesized via a simple hydrothermal route for the sensitive sensing of ammonia. The successful synthesis of ZIF-67 and rGO composite was confirmed with structural and spectroscopic characterizations. A porous structure and a high surface area (1080 m2 g-1) of the composite indicate its suitability as a gas sensing material. The composite material was coated as a thin film onto interdigitated gold electrodes. The sensor displays a change in its chemoresistive property (i.e., resistance) in the presence of ammonia (NH3) gas. A sensor response of 1.22 ± 0.02 [standard deviation (sd)] is measured for 20 ppm of NH3, while it shows a value of 4.77 ± 0.15 (sd) for 50 ppm of NH3. The fabricated sensor is reproducible and offers a stable response, while also providing tolerance against humidity and some other volatile compounds. The average response and recovery times of the sensor, for 50 ppm NH3 concentration, are found to be 46.5 ± 2.12 (sd) and 66.5 ± 2.12 (sd) s, respectively. The limit of detection of the sensor was found to be 74 ppb.

Room-Temperature Reduction of Graphene Oxide in Water by Metal Chloride Hydrates: A Cleaner Approach for the Preparation of Graphene@Metal Hybrids.

Project description:Headed for developing minimalistic strategies to produce graphene@metal hybrids for electronics on a larger scale, we discovered that graphene oxide (GO)-metal oxide (MO) hybrids are formed spontaneously in water at room temperature in the presence of nothing else than graphene oxide itself and metal ions. Our observations show metal oxide nanoparticles decorating the surface of graphene oxide with particle diameter in the range of 10-40 nm after only 1 h of mixing. Their load ranged from 0.2% to 6.3% depending on the nature of the selected metal. To show the generality of the reactivity of GO with different ions in standard conditions, we prepared common hybrids with GO and tin, iron, zinc, aluminum and magnesium. By means of carbon-13 solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance using magic angle spinning, we have found that graphene oxide is also moderately reduced at the same time. Our method is powerful and unique because it avoids the use of chemicals and heat to promote the coprecipitation and the reduction of GO. This advantage allows synthesizing GO@MO hybrids with higher structural integrity and purity with a tunable level of oxidization, in a faster and greener way.

Room-Temperature Transport Properties of Graphene with Defects Derived from Oxo-Graphene.

Project description:In recent years, graphene oxide has been considered as a soluble precursor of graphene for electronic applications. However, the performance lags behind that of graphene due to lattice defects. Here, the relation between the density of defects in the range of 0.2 % and 1.5 % and the transport properties is quantitatively studied. Therefore, the related flakes of monolayers of graphene were prepared from oxo-functionalized graphene (oxo-G). The morphologic structure of oxo-G was imaged by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Field-effect mobility values were determined to range between 0.3 cm2 V-1 s-1 and 33.2 cm2 V-1 s-1 , which were inversely proportional to the density of defects. These results provide the first quantitative description of the density of defects and transport properties, which plays an important role for potential applications.

A fast and sensitive room-temperature graphene nanomechanical bolometer.

Project description:Bolometers are a powerful means of detecting light. Emerging applications demand that bolometers work at room temperature, while maintaining high speed and sensitivity, properties which are inherently limited by the heat capacity of the detector. To this end, graphene has generated interest, because it has the lowest mass per unit area of any material, while also possessing extreme thermal stability and an unmatched spectral absorbance. Yet, due to its weakly temperature-dependent electrical resistivity, graphene has failed to challenge the state-of-the-art at room temperature. Here, in a departure from conventional bolometry, we use a graphene nanoelectromechanical system to detect light via resonant sensing. In our approach, absorbed light heats and thermally tensions a suspended graphene resonator, thereby shifting its resonant frequency. Using the resonant frequency as a readout for photodetection, we achieve a room-temperature noise-equivalent power (2 pW Hz-1/2) and bandwidth (from 10 kHz up to 1.3 MHz), challenging the state-of-the-art.

Giant Response and Selectivity of Hansen Solubility Parameters-Based Graphene-SBS Co-Polymer Matrix Composite Room Temperature Sensor to Organic Vapours.

Project description:A styrene-butadiene-styrene co-polymer matrix nanocomposite filled with graphene nanoplatelets was studied to prepare chemiresistive volatile organic compounds (VOCs) room temperature sensors with considerable response and selectivity. Nanofiller concentration was estimated from the electrical conductivity percolation behaviour of the nanocomposite. Fabricated sensors provided selective relative responses to representative VOCs differing by orders of magnitude. Maximum observed average relative responses upon exposure to saturated vapours of the tested VOCs were ca. 23% for ethanol, 1600% for acetone, and the giant values were 9 × 106% for n-heptane and 10 × 106% for toluene. The insensitivity of the sensor to the direct saturated water vapour exposure was verified. Although high humidity decreases the sensor's response, it paradoxically enhances the resolution between hydrocarbons and polar organics. The non-trivial sensing mechanism is explained using the Hansen solubility parameters (HSP), enabling a rational design of new sensors; thus, the HSP-based class of sensors is outlined.

High-Frequency Stochastic Switching of Graphene Resonators Near Room Temperature.

Project description:Stochastic switching between the two bistable states of a strongly driven mechanical resonator enables detection of weak signals based on probability distributions, in a manner that mimics biological systems. However, conventional silicon resonators at the microscale require a large amount of fluctuation power to achieve a switching rate in the order of a few hertz. Here, we employ graphene membrane resonators of atomic thickness to achieve a stochastic switching rate of 4.1 kHz, which is 100 times faster than current state-of-the-art. The (effective) temperature of the fluctuations is approximately 400 K, which is 3000 times lower than the state-of-the-art. This shows that these membranes are potentially useful to transduce weak signals in the audible frequency domain. Furthermore, we perform numerical simulations to understand the transition dynamics of the resonator and use analytical expressions to investigate the relevant scaling parameters that allow high-frequency, low-temperature stochastic switching to be achieved in mechanical resonators.

Gas Sensing Properties of Perovskite Decorated Graphene at Room Temperature.

Project description:This paper explores the gas sensing properties of graphene nanolayers decorated with lead halide perovskite (CH3NH3PbBr3) nanocrystals to detect toxic gases such as ammonia (NH3) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2). A chemical-sensitive semiconductor film based on graphene has been achieved, being decorated with CH3NH3PbBr3 perovskite (MAPbBr3) nanocrystals (NCs) synthesized, and characterized by several techniques, such as field emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Reversible responses were obtained towards NO2 and NH3 at room temperature, demonstrating an enhanced sensitivity when the graphene is decorated by MAPbBr3 NCs. Furthermore, the effect of ambient moisture was extensively studied, showing that the use of perovskite NCs in gas sensors can become a promising alternative to other gas sensitive materials, due to the protective character of graphene, resulting from its high hydrophobicity. Besides, a gas sensing mechanism is proposed to understand the effects of MAPbBr3 sensing properties.

Single photon emission from graphene quantum dots at room temperature.

Project description:Graphene being a zero-gap material, considerable efforts have been made to develop semiconductors whose structure is compatible with its hexagonal lattice. Size reduction is a promising way to achieve this objective. The reduction of both dimensions of graphene leads to graphene quantum dots. Here, we report on a single-emitter study that directly addresses the intrinsic emission properties of graphene quantum dots. In particular, we show that they are efficient and stable single-photon emitters at room temperature and that their emission wavelength can be modified through the functionalization of their edges. Finally, the investigation of the intersystem crossing shows that the short triplet lifetime and the low crossing yield are in agreement with the high brightness of these quantum emitters. These results represent a step-forward in performing chemistry engineering for the design of quantum emitters.

Preparation of biopolymer fibers by electrospinning from room temperature ionic liquids.

Project description:Electrospinning is a versatile process used to prepare micro- and nano- sized fibers from various polymers dissolved in volatile solvents. In this report, cellulose and cellulose-heparin composite fibers are prepared from nonvolatile room temperature ionic liquid (RTIL) solvents by electrospinning. RTILs are extracted from the biopolymer fiber after the fiber formation using a cosolvent. Micron to nanometer sized, branched fibers were obtained from 10% (w/w) concentration of polysaccharide biopolymer in RTIL solution with an applied voltage of 15-20 kV. Cellulose-heparin composite fibers showed anticoagulant activity, demonstrating that the bioactivity of heparin remained unaffected even on exposure to a high voltage involved in electrospinning.
