Kinetic analysis of an anion exchange absorbent for CO2 capture from ambient air.

ABSTRACT: This study reports a preparation method of a new moisture swing sorbent for CO2 capture from air. The new sorbent components include ion exchange resin (IER) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) as a binder. The IER can absorb CO2 when surrounding is dry and release CO2 when surrounding is wet. The manuscript presents the studies of membrane structure, kinetic model of absorption process, performance of desorption process and the diffusivity of water molecules in the CO2 absorbent. It has been proved that the kinetic performance of CO2 absorption/desorption can be improved by using thin binder and hot water treatment. The fast kinetics of P-100-90C absorbent is due to the thin PVC binder, and high diffusion rate of H2O molecules in the sample. The impressive is this new CO2 absorbent has the fastest CO2 absorption rate among all absorbents which have been reported by other up-to-date literatures.

Direct Air Capture Using Electrochemically Regenerated Anion Exchange Resins.

Project description:Direct air capture (DAC) aims to remove CO2 directly from the atmosphere. In this study, we have demonstrated proof-of-concept of a DAC process combining CO2 adsorption in a packed bed of amine-functionalized anion exchange resins (AERs) with a pH swing regeneration using an electrochemical cell (EC). The resin bed was regenerated using the alkaline solution produced in the cathodic compartment of the EC, while high purity CO2 (>95%) was desorbed in the acidifying compartment. After regenerating the AERs, some alkaline solution remained on the surface of the resins and provided additional CO2 capture capacity during adsorption. The highest CO2 capture capacity measured was 1.76 mmol·g-1 dry resins. Moreover, as the whole process was operated at room temperature, the resins did not show any apparent degradation after 150 cycles of adsorption-desorption. Furthermore, when the relative humidity of the air source increased from 33 to 84%, the water loss of the process decreased by 63%, while CO2 capture capacity fell 22%. Finally, although the pressure drop of the adsorption column (5 ± 1 kPa) and the energy consumption of the EC (537 ± 33 kJ·mol-1 at 20 mA·cm-2) are high, we have discussed the potential improvements toward a successful upscaling.

The urgency of the development of CO2 capture from ambient air.

Project description:CO(2) capture and storage (CCS) has the potential to develop into an important tool to address climate change. Given society's present reliance on fossil fuels, widespread adoption of CCS appears indispensable for meeting stringent climate targets. We argue that for conventional CCS to become a successful climate mitigation technology--which by necessity has to operate on a large scale--it may need to be complemented with air capture, removing CO(2) directly from the atmosphere. Air capture of CO(2) could act as insurance against CO(2) leaking from storage and furthermore may provide an option for dealing with emissions from mobile dispersed sources such as automobiles and airplanes.

Electrochemical Regeneration of Spent Alkaline Absorbent from Direct Air Capture.

Project description:CO2 capture from the atmosphere (or direct air capture) is widely recognized as a promising solution to reach negative emissions, and technologies using alkaline solutions as absorbent have already been demonstrated on a full scale. In the conventional temperature swing process, the subsequent regeneration of the alkaline solution is highly energy-demanding. In this study, we experimentally demonstrate simultaneous solvent regeneration and CO2 desorption in a continuous system using a H2-recycling electrochemical cell. A pH gradient is created in the electrochemical cell so that CO2 is desorbed at a low pH, while an alkaline capture solution (NaOH) is regenerated at high pH. By testing the cell under different working conditions, we experimentally achieved CO2 desorption with an energy consumption of 374 kJ·mol-1 CO2 and a CO2 purity higher than 95%. Moreover, our theoretical calculations show that a minimum energy consumption of 164 kJ·mol-1 CO2 could be achieved. Overall, the H2-recycling electrochemical cell allowed us to accomplish the simultaneous desorption of high-purity CO2 stream and regeneration of up to 59% of the CO2 capture capacity of the absorbent. These results are promising toward the upscaling of an energy-effective process for direct air capture.

Economic and energetic analysis of capturing CO2 from ambient air.

Project description:Capturing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere ("air capture") in an industrial process has been proposed as an option for stabilizing global CO(2) concentrations. Published analyses suggest these air capture systems may cost a few hundred dollars per tonne of CO(2), making it cost competitive with mainstream CO(2) mitigation options like renewable energy, nuclear power, and carbon dioxide capture and storage from large CO(2) emitting point sources. We investigate the thermodynamic efficiencies of commercial separation systems as well as trace gas removal systems to better understand and constrain the energy requirements and costs of these air capture systems. Our empirical analyses of operating commercial processes suggest that the energetic and financial costs of capturing CO(2) from the air are likely to have been underestimated. Specifically, our analysis of existing gas separation systems suggests that, unless air capture significantly outperforms these systems, it is likely to require more than 400 kJ of work per mole of CO(2), requiring it to be powered by CO(2)-neutral power sources in order to be CO(2) negative. We estimate that total system costs of an air capture system will be on the order of $1,000 per tonne of CO(2), based on experience with as-built large-scale trace gas removal systems.

CO2 Capture Membrane for Long-Cycle Lithium-Air Battery

Project description:Lithium-air batteries (LABs) have attracted extensive attention due to their ultra-high energy density. At present, most LABs are operated in pure oxygen (O2) since carbon dioxide (CO2) under ambient air will participate in the battery reaction and generate an irreversible by-product of lithium carbonate (Li2CO3), which will seriously affect the performance of the battery. Here, to solve this problem, we propose to prepare a CO2 capture membrane (CCM) by loading activated carbon encapsulated with lithium hydroxide (LiOH@AC) onto activated carbon fiber felt (ACFF). The effect of the LiOH@AC loading amount on ACFF has been carefully investigated, and CCM has an ultra-high CO2 adsorption performance (137 cm3 g−1) and excellent O2 transmission performance by loading 80 wt% LiOH@AC onto ACFF. The optimized CCM is further applied as a paster on the outside of the LAB. As a result, the specific capacity performance of LAB displays a sharp increase from 27,948 to 36,252 mAh g−1, and the cycle time is extended from 220 h to 310 h operating in a 4% CO2 concentration environment. The concept of carbon capture paster opens a simple and direct way for LABs operating in the atmosphere.

Polyethylenimine-Modified Zeolite 13X for CO2 Capture: Adsorption and Kinetic Studies.

Project description:A class of high molecular weight polyethylenimine (PEI)-modified zeolite 13X adsorbents were synthesized by varying the concentration of imines and screened for preliminary investigation of CO2 capture studies. The impregnated molecular amine zeolite composite was characterized and CO2 adsorption performance was investigated through TGA in the presence of atmospheric pure CO2 gas at 25, 50, 75, and 100 °C, respectively, using 20-80 wt % of PEI-loaded zeolite 13X adsorbents. This paper reports on the effects of temperature and amine (PEI) loading on CO2 adsorption capacity and estimated kinetic parameters through modeling of selected models which represent the reaction rate and diffusion rate models. The studied adsorbents showed the highest adsorption capacity at 75 °C with 60 wt % PEI loading. Thus, the optimum temperature of 75 °C and optimal loading of 60 wt % was observed from the current studies for CO2 capture. From modeling study, it was found that Avrami's fractional order and dual kinetic models (DKM) described well the adsorption behavior of CO2 on PEI-impregnated zeolite 13X at all temperatures accurately and up to 75 °C, respectively. Besides, intraparticle diffusion was found to be the rate-limiting step when compared with the film diffusion model.

Capture and conversion of CO2 at ambient conditions by a conjugated microporous polymer.

Project description:Conjugated microporous polymers are a new class of porous materials with an extended π-conjugation in an amorphous organic framework. Owing to the wide-ranging flexibility in the choice and design of components and the available control of pore parameters, these polymers can be tailored for use in various applications, such as gas storage, electronics and catalysis. Here we report a class of cobalt/aluminium-coordinated conjugated microporous polymers that exhibit outstanding CO2 capture and conversion performance at atmospheric pressure and room temperature. These polymers can store CO2 with adsorption capacities comparable to metal-organic frameworks. The cobalt-coordinated conjugated microporous polymers can also simultaneously function as heterogeneous catalysts for the reaction of CO2 and propylene oxide at atmospheric pressure and room temperature, wherein the polymers demonstrate better efficiency than a homogeneous salen-cobalt catalyst. By combining the functions of gas storage and catalysts, this strategy provides a direction for cost-effective CO2 reduction processes.

Anion-activated, thermoreversible gelation system for the capture, release, and visual monitoring of CO2.

Project description:Carbon dioxide (CO2) is an important green house gas. This is providing an incentive to develop new strategies to detect and capture CO2. Achieving both functions within a single molecular system represents an unmet challenge in terms of molecular design and could translate into enhanced ease of use. Here, we report an anion-activated chemosensor system, NAP-chol 1, that permits dissolved CO2 to be detected in organic media via simple color changes or through ratiometric differences in fluorescence intensity. NAP-chol 1 also acts as a super gelator for DMSO. The resulting gel is transformed into a homogeneous solution upon exposure to fluoride anions. Bubbling with CO2 regenerates the gel. Subsequent flushing with N2 or heating serves to release the CO2 and reform the sol form. This series of transformations is reversible and can be followed by easy-to-discern color changes. Thus, NAP-chol 1 allows for the capture and release of CO2 gas while acting as a three mode sensing system. In particular, it permits CO2 to be detected through reversible sol-gel transitions, simple changes in color, or ratiometric monitoring of the differences in the fluorescence features.

Flue-gas and direct-air capture of CO2 by porous metal-organic materials.

Project description:Sequestration of CO2, either from gas mixtures or directly from air (direct air capture), is a technological goal important to large-scale industrial processes such as gas purification and the mitigation of carbon emissions. Previously, we investigated five porous materials, three porous metal-organic materials (MOMs), a benchmark inorganic material, ZEOLITE 13X: and a chemisorbent, TEPA-SBA-15: , for their ability to adsorb CO2 directly from air and from simulated flue-gas. In this contribution, a further 10 physisorbent materials that exhibit strong interactions with CO2 have been evaluated by temperature-programmed desorption for their potential utility in carbon capture applications: four hybrid ultramicroporous materials, SIFSIX-3-CU: , DICRO-3-NI-I: , SIFSIX-2-CU-I: and MOOFOUR-1-NI: ; five microporous MOMs, DMOF-1: , ZIF-8: , MIL-101: , UIO-66: and UIO-66-NH2: ; an ultramicroporous MOM, NI-4-PYC: The performance of these MOMs was found to be negatively impacted by moisture. Overall, we demonstrate that the incorporation of strong electrostatics from inorganic moieties combined with ultramicropores offers improved CO2 capture performance from even moist gas mixtures but not enough to compete with chemisorbents.This article is part of the themed issue 'Coordination polymers and metal-organic frameworks: materials by design'.

Adsorption and anion exchange insight of indigo carmine onto CuAl-LDH/SWCNTs nanocomposite: kinetic, thermodynamic and isotherm analysis.

Project description:Two-dimensional layered materials are gaining much attention in the field of wastewater purification. Herein, we report the synthesis and characterization of an anion selective copper-aluminum-layered double hydroxide/single-walled carbon nanotubes (CuAl-LDH/SWCNTs) composite for the scavenging of organic dye indigo carmine (IC) from aqueous solution. A facile urea hydrolysis method was used for the controlled growth of the metal hydroxides over the SWCNTs. Structural characterization of the prepared materials was investigated using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. The obtained results revealed that the CuAl-LDH/SWCNTs composite has a higher potential for the removal of IC in comparison to CuAl-LDH and SWCNTs. The enhanced adsorption capacity of the composite revealed that deposition of CuAl-LDH over SWCNTs increases the active adsorption sites and promotes the interactions between the composite and IC dye via anion exchange, electrostatic, π-π, hydrogen bonding etc. Moreover, adsorption kinetics, isotherms, and thermodynamic studies have been also proposed to illustrate the mechanism of the IC adsorption onto the CuAl-LDH/SWCNTs composite. Thermodynamic parameters showed that the adsorption of IC dye onto the CuAl-LDH/SWCNTs composite was exothermic and spontaneous in nature. Intra-particle diffusion was determined to be the rate-limiting step and adsorption of IC followed the Langmuir isotherm model with the maximum monolayer adsorption capacity 294.117 mg g-1 at 20 °C. The results suggest that the CuAl-LDH/SWCNTs composite is a potential material for IC adsorption in aqueous solution.
