Data for the marble-cement paste composites for sustainable construction.

Project description:Waste utilization is crucial for achieving sustainability in the construction industry. This article provides data that demonstrate the possibility of industrial waste utilization in high volumes to enhance cementitious composites. This dataset could help researchers understand the cement paste composites' behavior in the fresh and hardened state. The data were obtained from the physical, mechanical, and durability tests of laboratory-produced samples. The composites were tested at 7, 28, and 90-days of hardening, according to the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standards. The obtained values were then evaluated using the DataFit curve fitting (nonlinear regression) and data plotting software. Additionally, two spreadsheets were created to help researchers calculate their weights and calculate the bulk specific gravity, water absorption, and porosity values. Mechanical Properties and Durability of CNT Cement Composites.

Project description:In the present paper, changes in mechanical properties of Portland cement-based mortars due to the addition of carbon nanotubes (CNT) and corrosion of embedded steel rebars in CNT cement pastes are reported. Bending strength, compression strength, porosity and density of mortars were determined and related to the CNT dosages. CNT cement paste specimens were exposed to carbonation and chloride attacks, and results on steel corrosion rate tests were related to CNT dosages. The increase in CNT content implies no significant variations of mechanical properties but higher steel corrosion intensities were observed.

Rheological and Mechanical Properties of High-Performance Fiber-Reinforced Cement Composites with a Low Water-Cement Ratio.

Project description:High-performance fiber-reinforced cement composites (HPFRCCs) have been widely used in structural engineering due to their excellent performance. With the trend of lightweight construction, these materials, which can be used in prefabricated components, are becoming more and more important. This study investigated the influence of the water-cement (w/c) ratio, within the 0.19-0.28 range, on the rheological and mechanical properties of HPFRCCs; the pore structure and microstructure were observed to evaluate its effect. An elastic modulus test showed that a smaller w/c ratio would result in a higher rigidity of the material. Both the yield shear stress and plastic viscosity decreased to significantly different degrees with an increasing w/c ratio; a decrease in the yield shear stress and plastic viscosity was conducive to air discharge from the composite and, hence, reduced the air content. Most of the internal pores had a diameter of 20-100 nm or larger than 200 nm, while the proportion of those with a diameter of 100-200 nm was relatively low. When the w/c ratio was below 0.22, the flexural and compressive strengths barely increased due to an increment in the number of larger pores (i.e., diameter >200 nm). The results showed that the yield shear stress, plastic viscosity, pore uniformity, and the number of pores with a diameter above 200 nm are the dominant factors affecting the HPFRCC performance at a low w/c ratio.

Cement-Based Composites Containing Oxidized Graphene Nanoplatelets: Effects on the Mechanical and Electrical Properties.

Project description:Graphene nanoplatelets can improve the electrical and mechanical properties of cement matrix composites. The dispersion and interaction of graphene in the cement matrix appears to be difficult due to its hydrophobic nature. By introducing polar groups, graphene oxidation improves the level of dispersion and interaction with the cement. In this work, graphene oxidation using sulfonitric acid for 10, 20, 40, and 60 min was studied. Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) and Raman spectroscopy were employed to analyze the graphene before and after the oxidation. The mechanical properties of the final composites showed an improvement of 52% in the flexural strength, 4% in the fracture energy, and 8% in the compressive strength in the case of 60 min of oxidation. In addition, the samples showed a reduction of at least one order of magnitude in electrical resistivity when compared with pure cement.

Acoustic, Mechanical and Thermal Properties of Green Composites Reinforced with Natural Fibers Waste.

Project description:The use of acoustic panels is one of the most important methods for sound insulation in buildings. Moreover, it has become increasingly important to use green/natural origin materials in this area to reduce environmental impact. This study focuses on the investigation of acoustic, mechanical and thermal properties of natural fiber waste reinforced green epoxy composites. Three different types of fiber wastes were used, e.g., cotton, coconut and sugarcane with epoxy as the resin. Different fiber volume fractions, i.e., 10%, 15% and 20% for each fiber were used with a composite thickness of 3 mm. The sound absorption coefficient, impact strength, flexural strength, thermal conductivity, diffusivity, coefficient of thermal expansion and thermogravimetric properties of all samples were investigated. It has been found that by increasing the fiber content, the sound absorption coefficient also increases. The coconut fiber-based composites show a higher sound absorption coefficient than in the other fiber-reinforced composites. The impact and flexural strength of the cotton fiber-reinforced composite samples are higher than in other samples. The coefficient of thermal expansion of the cotton fiber-based composite is also higher than the other composites. Thermogravimetric analysis revealed that all the natural fiber-reinforced composites can sustain till 300 °C with a minor weight loss. The natural fiber-based composites can be used in building interiors, automotive body parts and household furniture. Such composite development is an ecofriendly approach to the acoustic world.

Nanoscaled Mechanical Properties of Cement Composites Reinforced with Carbon Nanofibers.

Project description:This paper reports the effects of carbon nanofibers (CNFs) on nanoscaled mechanical properties of cement composites. CNFs were added to cement composites at the filler loading of 0.2 wt % (by wt. of cement). Micrographs based on scanning electron microscopy (SEM) show that CNFs are capable of forming strong interfacial bonding with cement matrices. Experimental results using nanoindentation reveal that the addition of CNFs in cement composites increases the proportions of high-density calcium-silicate-hydrate gel (HD-CSH) compared to low-density CSH gel. It was also found that the inclusion of CNFs increases the compressive strength of cement composites.

Thermophysical and Mechanical Properties of Hardened Cement Paste with Microencapsulated Phase Change Materials for Energy Storage.

Project description:In this research, structural-functional integrated cement-based materials were prepared by employing cement paste and a microencapsulated phase change material (MPCM) manufactured using urea-formaldehyde resin as the shell and paraffin as the core material. The encapsulation ratio of the MPCM could reach up to 91.21 wt%. Thermal energy storage cement pastes (TESCPs) incorporated with different MPCM contents (5%, 10%, 15%, 20% and 25% by weight of cement) were developed, and their thermal and mechanical properties were studied. The results showed that the total energy storage capacity of the hardened cement specimens with MPCM increased by up to 3.9-times compared with that of the control cement paste. The thermal conductivity at different temperature levels (35-36 °C, 55-56 °C and 72-74 °C) decreased with the increase of MPCM content, and the decrease was the highest when the temperature level was 55-56 °C. Moreover, the compressive strength, flexural strength and density of hardened cement paste decreased with the increase in MPCM content linearly. Among the evaluated properties, the compressive strength of TESCPs had a larger and faster degradation with the increase of MPCM content.

Data on the mechanical properties of recycled wind turbine blade composites.

Project description:Wind turbine blades that face end-of-life recycled mechanically. The recycled material was first comminuted via a hammer-mill through a range of varying screen sizes, resonated (polymeric Methylene diphenyl isocyanate (pMDI)) and then hand-formed and hot pressed. The hot press temperature and time were set as 138 °C and 5 min accordingly, typical for pMDI composite processing. Mechanical properties (Modulus of rupture (MOR), Module of elasticity (MOE) and Internal bond(IB)) dataset of composites made from recycled wind turbine blades(rWTBs) presented. Dataset also presented the influence of resin level, moisture content, mill screen size and density on the mechanical properties of composites [1], [2].

A comparative study on the mechanical, physical and morphological properties of cement-micro/nanoFe3O4 composite.

Project description:In this study, fabrication of a composite containing the ordinary Portland cement (OPC) and magnetite (Fe3O4) micro/nanoparticles is reported. In the first stage, the cement paste samples with a fixed 0.2 wt.% Fe3O4 additive in four different particle sizes (20-40?nm, 80-100?nm, 250-300?nm, and 1-2?µm) were prepared to check the effect of magnetite size. Magnetite was found to play an effective role in reinforcing cement matrix. The results showed that the cement paste reinforced by magnetite nanoparticles of 20-40?nm size range had the highest compressive, flexural, and tensile strengths compared to those of the other samples reinforced by larger particles. In the second stage, various amounts of the Fe3O4 nanoparticles of 20-40?nm size range were added to the cement to evaluate the influence of magnetite amount and find the optimized reinforcement amount. It was revealed that adding 0.25 wt.% Fe3O4 nanoparticles of 20-40?nm size range, as the optimal specimen, increased the compressive strength, flexural strength and tensile splitting strength by 23-32, 17-25, and 15-19%, respectively, and decreased the electrical resistance by 19-31%.
