Transition-metal-free controlled polymerization for poly(p-aryleneethynylene)s.

ABSTRACT: A transition-metal-free controlled polymerization for the attainment of poly(p-aryleneethynylene)s is developed. The polymerization of 1-pentafluorophenyl-4-[(trimethylsilyl)ethynyl]benzene with a catalytic amount of fluoride anions proceeds in a chain-growth-like manner to afford polymers with controlled molecular weights and low polydispersity indexes. The mechanism involves a pentacoordinated fluorosilicate as a key intermediate. The anionic "living" nature of this process is applied to block copolymerization and also surface-terminated polymerization.

Project description:Mild thermolysis of Lewis base stabilized phosphinoborane monomers R(1)R(2)P-BH2?NMe3 (R(1),R(2)=H, Ph, or tBu/H) at room temperature to 100?°C provides a convenient new route to oligo- and polyphosphinoboranes [R(1)R(2)P-BH2]n. The polymerization appears to proceed via the addition/head-to-tail polymerization of short-lived free phosphinoborane monomers, R(1)R(2)P-BH2. This method offers access to high molar mass materials, as exemplified by poly(tert-butylphosphinoborane), that are currently inaccessible using other routes (e.g. catalytic dehydrocoupling).

Non-metal with metal behavior: metal-free coordination-insertion ring-opening polymerization.

Project description:The "coordination-insertion" ring-opening polymerization (ROP) mechanism has so far been the monopoly of metal catalysts. In this work, we present a metal-free "coordination-insertion" ROP of trimethylene carbonate (TMC) and ε-caprolactone (ε-CL), as well as their sequential block copolymerization, with N-trimethylsilyl-bis (trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (TMSNTf2) as the non-metallic initiator/catalyst. TMSNTf2 was proposed to work through an unprecedented metal-free "coordination-insertion" mechanism, which involves the coordination of monomer to the Si atom of TMSNTf2, the nucleophilic attack of the -NTf2 group on the coordinated monomer, and the cleavage of the acyl-oxygen bond of the monomer. The proposed metal-free "coordination-insertion" ROP was studied by NMR, SEC, and MALDI-TOF analyses. In addition, the TMSNTf2-mediated ROP of TMC and ε-CL led to linear and cyclic polymers following two-stage first-order polymerization processes, as evidenced by structural analyses and kinetics study, which further demonstrated the metal-free "coordination-insertion" mechanism.

A transition-metal-free & diazo-free styrene cyclopropanation.

Project description:An operationally simple and broadly applicable novel cyclopropanation of styrenes using gem-diiodomethyl carbonyl reagents has been developed. Visible-light triggered the photoinduced generation of iodomethyl carbonyl radicals, able to cyclopropanate a wide array of styrenes with excellent chemoselectivity and functional group tolerance. To highlight the utility of our photocyclopropanation, we demonstrated the late-stage functionalization of biomolecule derivatives.

Metal-Free Ring-Opening Metathesis Polymerization with Hydrazonium Initiators.

Project description:The ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) of cyclopropenes using hydrazonium initiators is described. The initiators, which are formed by the condensation of 2,3-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane and an aldehyde, polymerize cyclopropene monomers by a sequence of [3+2] cycloaddition and cycloreversion reactions. This process generates short chain polyolefins (Mn ≤9.4 kg mol-1 ) with relatively low dispersities (Đ≤1.4). The optimized conditions showed efficiency comparable to that achieved with Grubbs' 2nd generation catalyst for the polymerization of 3-methyl-3-phenylcyclopropene. A positive correlation between monomer to initiator ratio and degree of polymerization was revealed through NMR spectroscopy.

Transition-Metal-Free Cleavage of CO.

Project description:Tertiary silane 1H , 2-[(diphenylsilyl)methyl]-6-methylpyridine, reacts with tris(pentafluorophenyl)borane (BCF) to form the intramolecular pyridine-stabilized silylium 1+ -HBCF. The corresponding 2-[(diphenylsilyl)methyl]pyridine, lacking the methyl-group on the pyridine ring, forms classic N(py)→B adduct 2H -BCF featuring an intact silane Si-H fragment. Complex 1+ -HBCF promotes cleavage of the C≡O triple bond in carbon monoxide with double C-Csp2 bond formation, leading to complex 3 featuring a B-(diarylmethyl)-B-aryl-boryloxysilane fragment. Reaction with pinacol generates bis(pentafluorophenyl)methane 4 as isolable product, proving the transition-metal-free deoxygenation of carbon monoxide by this main-group system. Experimental data and DFT calculations support the existence of an equilibrium between the silylium-hydroborate ion pair and the silane-borane mixture that is responsible for the observed reactivity.

Transition-Metal-Free Reductive Hydroxymethylation of Isoquinolines.

Project description:A transition-metal-free reductive hydroxymethylation reaction has been developed, enabling the preparation of tetrahydroisoquinolines bearing C4-quaternary centers from the corresponding isoquinolines. Deuterium labelling studies and control experiments enable a potential mechanism to be elucidated which features a key Cannizzaro-type reduction followed by an Evans-Tishchenko reaction. When isoquinolines featuring a proton at the 4-position are used, a tandem methylation-hydroxymethylation occurs, leading to the formation of 2 new C-C bonds in one pot.

Transition-metal-free alkynylation of aryl chlorides.

Project description:Two sets of conditions have been developed for a base-mediated, transition-metal-free alkynylation of aryl chlorides that proceeds via benzyne intermediates. The first set of conditions involves the use of TMPLi base in a pentane/THF mixture at 25 °C. The second set involves use of a metal alkoxide base in dioxane at elevated temperature. Reasonable functional group tolerance has been observed. Fluoro, trifluoromethyl, silyl, cyano, and alcohol functionalities are compatible with the reaction conditions.

Potassium Poly(Heptazine Imide): Transition Metal-Free Solid-State Triplet Sensitizer in Cascade Energy Transfer and [3+2]-cycloadditions.

Project description:Polymeric carbon nitride materials have been used in numerous light-to-energy conversion applications ranging from photocatalysis to optoelectronics. For a new application and modelling, we first refined the crystal structure of potassium poly(heptazine imide) (K-PHI)-a benchmark carbon nitride material in photocatalysis-by means of X-ray powder diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. Using the crystal structure of K-PHI, periodic DFT calculations were performed to calculate the density-of-states (DOS) and localize intra band states (IBS). IBS were found to be responsible for the enhanced K-PHI absorption in the near IR region, to serve as electron traps, and to be useful in energy transfer reactions. Once excited with visible light, carbon nitrides, in addition to the direct recombination, can also undergo singlet-triplet intersystem crossing. We utilized the K-PHI centered triplet excited states to trigger a cascade of energy transfer reactions and, in turn, to sensitize, for example, singlet oxygen (1 O2 ) as a starting point to synthesis up to 25 different N-rich heterocycles.

Transition Metal-Free 1,2-Carboboration of Unactivated Alkenes.

Project description:A method for transition metal-free 1,2-carboboration of unactivated alkenes with bis(catecholato)diboron as the boron source in combination with alkyl halides as the alkyl component is introduced. The three-component reaction proceeds via a radical pathway on a broad range of unactivated alkenes, and the 1,2-carboboration products serve as valuable synthetic building blocks. Density functional theory calculations provide insights into the mechanism.

Direct transition-metal-free intramolecular arylation of phenols.

Project description:Direct transition-metal-free, base-mediated intramolecular arylation of phenols with aryl halides has been developed. In the presence of 2.5 equiv of t-BuOK in dioxane at 140 degrees C, the intramolecular cyclization of 3-(2-halobenzyloxy)phenols affords 6H-benzo[c]chromenes in high yields. This reaction proceeds by an initial formation of a benzyne intermediate followed by an aromatic sp(2) C-H functionalization (a formal C-H activation) to form the carbon-carbon bond.
