In order to reduce the silicon area of the chip and optimize the power of arithmetic circuits, this paper proposes a low power carry look-ahead BCD (Binary Coded Decimal) adder which uses a four bit MOCLA (Multiplexer and Or gate based Carry Look Ahead Adder) that forms the basic building block. This proposed MOCLA style uses a 2 input MUX, OR gate and GDI (Gate Diffusion Input) based full adder and PG units and it is used for achieving low power in BCD adder circuits. ...[more]

Project description:This article presents a test data set combining data relevant for power system reliability analysis, including network data, reliability data, basic interruption cost data, and exemplary operating state data. The data set originated as a data set for testing power market models with network constraints and was later extended for use in integrated power market and power system reliability analyses. The network model consists of 25 buses and four price (market) areas representing small regions of the Nordic power system. Three of the areas are meshed but with relatively weak connections between them, and a fourth area is represented by a single bus connected by an HVDC cable. Reliability data (failure rates and outage times) are based on statistics from the Norwegian standardised system FASIT for collection, calculation and reporting of disturbance and reliability data.

Project description:Cochlea devices are powered up with the help of batteries and they should possess long working life to avoid replacing of devices at regular interval of years. Hence the devices with low power consumptions are required. In cochlea devices there are numerous filters, each responsible for frequency variant signals, which helps in identifying speech signals of different audible range. In this paper, multiplierless lookup table (LUT) based auditory filter is implemented. Power aware adder architectures are utilized to add the output samples of the LUT, available at every clock cycle. The design is developed and modeled using Verilog HDL, simulated using Mentor Graphics Model-Sim Simulator, and synthesized using Synopsys Design Compiler tool. The design was mapped to TSMC 65 nm technological node. The standard ASIC design methodology has been adapted to carry out the power analysis. The proposed FIR filter architecture has reduced the leakage power by 15% and increased its performance by 2.76%.

Project description:This article describes a reference data set for a representative Norwegian radial, medium voltage (MV) electric power distribution system operated at 22 kV. The data set is developed in the Norwegian research centre CINELDI and will in brief be referred to as the CINELDI MV reference system. Data for a real Norwegian distribution system were provided by a distribution grid company. The data have been anonymized and processed to obtain a simplified but still realistic grid model with 124 nodes. The first part of the data set describes the base version of the reference system that represents the present-day state of the grid, including information on topology, electrical parameters, and existing load points. The data set also comprises a load data set with load demand time series for a year with hourly resolution and scenarios for the possible long-term load development. These data describe an extended version of the reference system with information on possible new load points being added to the system in the future. A third part of the data set is data necessary for carrying out reliability of supply analyses for the system. The base version of the reference system described in this article can be extended to represent other types of distribution grids (e.g., with a ring topology). The reference grid can be used for assessing new methods and principles for distribution system operation and planning, including assessment of flexibility resources, active distribution grid measures, grid reinforcement planning, grid reinvestment planning, reliability of supply analysis, self-healing, etc.

Project description:Understanding the functional implications of changes in gene expression, mutations, etc., is the aim of most genomic experiments. To achieve this, several functional profiling methods have been proposed. Such methods study the behaviour of different gene modules (e.g. gene ontology terms) in response to one particular variable (e.g. differential gene expression). In spite to the wealth of information provided by functional profiling methods, a common limitation to all of them is their inherent unidimensional nature. In order to overcome this restriction we present a multidimensional logistic model that allows studying the relationship of gene modules with different genome-scale measurements (e.g. differential expression, genotyping association, methylation, copy number alterations, heterozygosity, etc.) simultaneously. Moreover, the relationship of such functional modules with the interactions among the variables can also be studied, which produces novel results impossible to be derived from the conventional unidimensional functional profiling methods. We report sound results of gene sets associations that remained undetected by the conventional one-dimensional gene set analysis in several examples. Our findings demonstrate the potential of the proposed approach for the discovery of new cell functionalities with complex dependences on more than one variable.

Project description:Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) are a popular approach for identifying common genetic variants and epistatic effects associated with a disease phenotype. The traditional statistical analysis of such GWAS attempts to assess the association between each individual single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) and the observed phenotype. Recently, kernel machine-based tests for association between a SNP set (e.g., SNPs in a gene) and the disease phenotype have been proposed as a useful alternative to the traditional individual-SNP approach, and allow for flexible modeling of the potentially complicated joint SNP effects in a SNP set while adjusting for covariates. We extend the kernel machine framework to accommodate related subjects from multiple independent families, and provide a score-based variance component test for assessing the association of a given SNP set with a continuous phenotype, while adjusting for additional covariates and accounting for within-family correlation. We illustrate the proposed method using simulation studies and an application to genetic data from the Genetic Epidemiology Network of Arteriopathy (GENOA) study.

Project description:In this article, we introduce a data set concerning electric-power consumption-related features registered in seven main municipalities of Nariño, Colombia, from December 2010 to May 2016. The data set consists of 4427 socio-demographic characteristics, and 7 power-consumption-referred measured values. Data were fully collected by the company Centrales Eléctricas de Nariño (CEDENAR) according to the client consumption records. Power consumption data collection was carried following a manual procedure wherein company workers are in charge of manually registering the readings (measured in kWh) reported by the electric energy meters installed at each housing/building. Released data set is aimed at providing researchers a suitable input for designing and assessing the performance of forecasting, modelling, simulation and optimization approaches applied to electric power consumption prediction and characterization problems. Project description:Gene set analysis (GSA) has become a successful tool to interpret gene expression profiles in terms of biological functions, molecular pathways, or genomic locations. GSA performs statistical tests for independent microarray samples at the level of gene sets rather than individual genes. Nowadays, an increasing number of microarray studies are conducted to explore the dynamic changes of gene expression in a variety of species and biological scenarios. In these longitudinal studies, gene expression is repeatedly measured over time such that a GSA needs to take into account the within-gene correlations in addition to possible between-gene correlations.We provide a robust nonparametric approach to compare the expressions of longitudinally measured sets of genes under multiple treatments or experimental conditions. The limiting distributions of our statistics are derived when the number of genes goes to infinity while the number of replications can be small. When the number of genes in a gene set is small, we recommend permutation tests based on our nonparametric test statistics to achieve reliable type I error and better power while incorporating unknown correlations between and within-genes. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method has a greater power than other methods for various data distributions and heteroscedastic correlation structures. This method was used for an IL-2 stimulation study and significantly altered gene sets were identified.The simulation study and the real data application showed that the proposed gene set analysis provides a promising tool for longitudinal microarray analysis. R scripts for simulating longitudinal data and calculating the nonparametric statistics are posted on the North Dakota INBRE website http://ndinbre.org/programs/bioinformatics.php. Project description:By aggregating data for complex traits in a biologically meaningful way, gene and gene-set analysis constitute a valuable addition to single-marker analysis. However, although various methods for gene and gene-set analysis currently exist, they generally suffer from a number of issues. Statistical power for most methods is strongly affected by linkage disequilibrium between markers, multi-marker associations are often hard to detect, and the reliance on permutation to compute p-values tends to make the analysis computationally very expensive. To address these issues we have developed MAGMA, a novel tool for gene and gene-set analysis. The gene analysis is based on a multiple regression model, to provide better statistical performance. The gene-set analysis is built as a separate layer around the gene analysis for additional flexibility. This gene-set analysis also uses a regression structure to allow generalization to analysis of continuous properties of genes and simultaneous analysis of multiple gene sets and other gene properties. Simulations and an analysis of Crohn's Disease data are used to evaluate the performance of MAGMA and to compare it to a number of other gene and gene-set analysis tools. The results show that MAGMA has significantly more power than other tools for both the gene and the gene-set analysis, identifying more genes and gene sets associated with Crohn's Disease while maintaining a correct type 1 error rate. Moreover, the MAGMA analysis of the Crohn's Disease data was found to be considerably faster as well.

Project description:BACKGROUND: Due to the large number of hypothesis tests performed during the process of routine analysis of microarray data, a multiple testing adjustment is certainly warranted. However, when the number of tests is very large and the proportion of differentially expressed genes is relatively low, the use of a multiple testing adjustment can result in very low power to detect those genes which are truly differentially expressed. Filtering allows for a reduction in the number of tests and a corresponding increase in power. Common filtering methods include filtering by variance, average signal or MAS detection call (for Affymetrix arrays). We study the effects of filtering in combination with the Benjamini-Hochberg method for false discovery rate control and q-value for false discovery rate estimation. RESULTS: Three case studies are used to compare three different filtering methods in combination with the two false discovery rate methods and three different preprocessing methods. For the case studies considered, filtering by detection call and variance (on the original scale) consistently led to an increase in the number of differentially expressed genes identified. On the other hand, filtering by variance on the log2 scale had a detrimental effect when paired with MAS5 or PLIER preprocessing methods, even when the testing was done on the log2 scale. A simulation study was done to further examine the effect of filtering by variance. We find that filtering by variance leads to higher power, often with a decrease in false discovery rate, when paired with either of the false discovery rate methods considered. This holds regardless of the proportion of genes which are differentially expressed or whether we assume dependence or independence among genes. CONCLUSION: The case studies show that both detection call and variance filtering are viable methods of filtering which can increase the number of differentially expressed genes identified. The simulation study demonstrates that when paired with a false discovery rate method, filtering by variance can increase power while still controlling the false discovery rate. Filtering out 50% of probe sets seems reasonable as long as the majority of genes are not expected to be differentially expressed.

Project description:This article presents an approach to microarray data analysis using discretised expression values in combination with a methodology of closed item set mining for class labeled data (RelSets). A statistical 2 x 2 factorial design analysis was run in parallel. The approach was validated on two independent sets of two-color microarray experiments using potato plants. Our results demonstrate that the two different analytical procedures, applied on the same data, are adequate for solving two different biological questions being asked. Statistical analysis is appropriate if an overview of the consequences of treatments and their interaction terms on the studied system is needed. If, on the other hand, a list of genes whose expression (upregulation or downregulation) differentiates between classes of data is required, the use of the RelSets algorithm is preferred. The used algorithms are freely available upon request to the authors.
