Project description:A simple, practical, and high chemo-selective method for the synthesis of propargyl alcohol and allenyl alcohols via Cu-catalyzed, Mn-mediated propargylation and allenylation of aldehydes with propargyl bromides has been established. When 3-bromo-1-propyne was conducted under the standard condition, the aldehydes were transformed to the corresponding propargylation products completely, while when 1-bromo-2-pentyne was used, allenic alcohol was the only product. Variety of homopropargyl alcohols and allenyl alcohols were obtained in high yields and the reaction is compatible with broad substrate scopes. In addition, the large-scale reaction could also be proceeded smoothly indicating the potential synthetic applications of this transformation.

Cu(I)-Catalyzed 1,2-Alkynyl-propargylation and -benzylation of Benzyne Derivatives.

Project description:We report here a three-component, Cu(I)-catalyzed hexadehydro-Diels-Alder (HDDA) benzyne 1,2-difunctionalization reaction. This protocol allowed the introduction of two different carbon-based substituents onto the in situ-generated benzyne. These substituents were terminal monoynes or diynes partnered with propargylic, benzylic, or allylic chlorides. An example of a sequential HDDA reaction is demonstrated using the product of a 1,3-diyne and a propargylic halide, itself a newly created HDDA precursor.

Polymerization Isomerism in Co-M (M = Cu, Ag, Au) Carbonyl Clusters: Synthesis, Structures and Computational Investigation.

Project description:The reaction of [Co(CO)4]- (1) with M(I) compounds (M = Cu, Ag, Au) was reinvestigated unraveling an unprecedented case of polymerization isomerism. Thus, as previously reported, the trinuclear clusters [M{Co(CO)4}2]- (M = Cu, 2; Ag, 3; Au, 4) were obtained by reacting 1 with M(I) in a 2:1 molar ratio. Their molecular structures were corroborated by single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SC-XRD) on isomorphous [NEt4][M{Co(CO)4}2] salts. [NEt4](3)represented the first structural characterization of 3. More interestingly, changing the crystallization conditions of solutions of 3, the hexanuclear cluster [Ag2{Co(CO)4}4]2- (5) was obtained in the solid state instead of 3. Its molecular structure was determined by SC-XRD as Na2(5)·C4H6O2, [PPN]2(5)·C5H12 (PPN = N(PPh3)2]+), [NBu4]2(5) and [NMe4]2(5) salts. 5 may be viewed as a dimer of 3 and, thus, it represents a rare case of polymerization isomerism (that is, two compounds having the same elemental composition but different molecular weights) in cluster chemistry. The phenomenon was further studied in solution by IR and ESI-MS measurements and theoretically investigated by computational methods. Both experimental evidence and density functional theory (DFT) calculations clearly pointed out that the dimerization process occurs in the solid state only in the case of Ag, whereas Cu and Au related species exist only as monomers.

Cu-catalyzed enantioselective synthesis of tertiary benzylic copper complexes and their <i>in situ</i> addition to carbonyl compounds.

Project description:Catalytic chemo- and enantioselective generation of tertiary benzylic copper complexes from Cu-B(pin) (pin = pinacolato) additions to 1,1-disubstituted alkenes followed by in situ reactions with ketones and carboxylic acid phenol esters to construct multifunctional alkylboron compounds that contain quaternary stereogenic centers is presented. The method is distinguished by the unprecedented reaction mode of tertiary benzylic Cu complexes, allowing reaction with a wide range of carbonyl electrophiles in good yields and with high chemo-, site-, diastereo- and enantioselectivity. The catalytic protocol was performed with easily accessible chiral ligands and copper salts at ambient temperature. Functionalization of multifunctional alkylboron products provides useful building blocks that are otherwise difficult to access.

Copper-Catalyzed Propargylation of Nitroalkanes.

Project description:Using a commercially available, inexpensive, and abundant copper catalyst system, an efficient α-functionalization of nitroalkanes with propargyl bromides is now established. This mild and robust method is highly functional group tolerant and provides straightforward access to complex secondary and tertiary homopropargylic nitroalkanes. Moreover, the utility of these α-propargylated nitroalkanes is demonstrated through downstream functionalization to biologically relevant, five-membered N-heterocycles such as pyrroles and 2-pyrrolines.

Palladium-catalyzed chemoselective direct α-arylation of carbonyl compounds with chloroaryl triflates at the C-Cl site.

Project description:This study described palladium-catalyzed chemoselective direct α-arylation of carbonyl compounds with chloroaryl triflates in the Ar-Cl bond. The Pd/SelectPhos system showed excellent chemoselectivity toward the Ar-Cl bond in the presence of the Ar-OTf bond with a broad substrate scope and excellent product yields. The electronic and steric hindrance offered by the -PR2 group of the ligand with the C2-alkyl group was found to be the key factor affecting the reactivity and chemoselectivity of the α-arylation reaction. The chemodivergent approach was also successfully employed in the synthesis of flurbiprofen and its derivatives (e.g., -OMe and -F).

Directed nickel-catalyzed 1,2-dialkylation of alkenyl carbonyl compounds.

Project description:A nickel-catalyzed conjunctive cross-coupling of non-conjugated alkenes, alkyl halides, and alkylzinc reagents is reported. Regioselectivity is controlled by chelation of a removable bidentate 8-aminoquinoline directing group. Under optimized conditions, a wide range of 1,2-dialkylated products can be accessed in moderate to excellent yields. To the best of our knowledge, this report represents the first example of three-component 1,2-dialkylation of non-conjugated alkenes to introduce differentiated alkyl fragments.

Project description:We report a regioselective, nickel-catalyzed syn-1,2-carbosulfenylation of non-conjugated alkenyl carbonyl compounds with alkyl/arylzinc nucleophiles and tailored N-S electrophiles. This method allows the simultaneous installation of a variety of C(sp3) and S(Ar) (or Se(Ar)) groups onto unactivated alkenes, which complements previously developed 1,2-carbosulfenylation methodology in which only C(sp2) nucleophiles are compatible. A bidentate directing auxiliary controls regioselectivity, promotes high syn-stereoselectivity with a variety of E- and Z-internal alkenes, and enables the use of an array of electrophilic sulfenyl (and seleno) electrophiles. Among compatible electrophiles, those with N-alkyl-benzamide leaving groups were found to be especially effective, as determined through comprehensive structure-reactivity mapping.

Bifunctional Biphenyl-2-ylphosphine Ligand Enables Tandem Gold-Catalyzed Propargylation of Aldehyde and Unexpected Cycloisomerization.

Project description:Despite extensive studies in gold catalysis, σ-allenylgold species have not been invoked as catalytic intermediates and their reactivities not studied. This work reports for the first time they are generated in situ and undergo nucleophilic addition to activated aldehydes in a bifunctional phosphine ligand-enabled gold catalysis. This development reveals a broad range of opportunities to achieve propargylic C-H functionalization for the first time under catalytic and mild conditions. The homopropargylic alcohols generated undergo ligand-enabled cycloisomerizations involving an unexpected silyl migration.
