Translesion synthesis is the process by which nonclassical DNA polymerases bypass DNA damage during DNA replication. Cells possess a variety of nonclassical polymerases, each one is specific for incorporating nucleotides opposite to one or more closely related DNA lesions, called its cognate lesions.
