Complete Genome Sequence of Beak and Feather Disease Virus Isolated from an African Grey Parrot in China in 2017.

ABSTRACT: The complete nucleotide (nt) sequence of beak and feather disease virus (BFDV) was determined. The viral genome consists of 1,991 nt, including an 870-nt open reading frame 1 (ORF1), a 744-nt ORF2, a conserved stem-loop structure, and the second hairpin. This is the first reported detection of BFDV in an infected African grey parrot in China.

Project description:We report a severe case of rhinothecal cryptococcoma in a 13-year-old female African Grey Parrot (Psittacus erithacus). The bird was born and bred in captivity in Portugal. The beak was deformed and showed several round soft masses, and microscopic examination revealed the presence of cells suggestive for Cryptococcus. Phenotypic and molecular analyses identified the obtained yeast culture as C. bacillisporus (AFLP5/VGIII). By phylogenetic analysis the parrot strain clustered with clinical C. bacillisporus strains from Mexico.

Project description:We report the complete genome sequence of an H5N2 avian influenza virus (AIV) that was first isolated from a parrot in Guangdong in southern China in 2004. Genomic sequence and phylogenetic analyses showed that it was highly homologous with the North American H5N2 viruses and all eight genes of this virus belonged to the North American gene lineage. These data will help in the investigation of the epidemiology and host range of AIVs in southern China.

CH/JXJA/2017 had a distant relationship with the attenuated CV777 vaccine strain, but the insertion sites of the S1 gene were similar to those of the recombinant strain of CH/ZMDZY/11.
