The envelope glycoprotein (Env) trimer ((gp120/gp41)<sub>3</sub>) mediates human immunodeficiency virus (HIV-1) entry into cells. The "closed," antibody-resistant Env trimer is driven to more open conformations by binding the host receptor, CD4.
