A multimodal data-set of a unidirectional glass fibre reinforced polymer composite.

ABSTRACT: A unidirectional (UD) glass fibre reinforced polymer (GFRP) composite was scanned at varying resolutions in the micro-scale with several imaging modalities. All six scans capture the same region of the sample, containing well-aligned fibres inside a UD load-carrying bundle. Two scans of the cross-sectional surface of the bundle were acquired at a high resolution, by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and optical microscopy (OM), and four volumetric scans were acquired through X-ray computed tomography (CT) at different resolutions. Individual fibres can be resolved from these scans to investigate the micro-structure of the UD bundle. The data is hosted at https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.1195879 and it was used in Emerson et al. (2018) [1] to demonstrate that precise and representative characterisations of fibre geometry are possible with relatively low X-ray CT resolutions if the analysis method is robust to image quality.

Numerical Modelling of Geopolymer Concrete In-Filled Fibre-Reinforced Polymer Composite Columns Subjected to Axial Compression Loading

Project description:In this research study, the performance of geopolymer concrete (GPC) in-filled fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) composite (GPC-FRP) columns exposed to compressive loading is examined using the finite element (FE) analysis. The load–deflection behaviour is investigated by considering the impact of the strength of concrete, different fibre orientations and thicknesses of FRP tubes in terms of the diameter/thickness (D/t) ratio, surface friction in between the concrete and enclosing FRP tube, the lateral confinement and the axial stress distribution characteristics. The load-carrying capacity (LCC) of the GPC-FRP composite columns and cement concrete (CC) in-filled FRP composite (CC-FRP) columns is compared and the results imply that the LCC of the GPC-FRP composite columns is (0.9 to 2.04%) greater than the CC-FRP composite columns. The improvement in the LCC and lateral confining pressure of the GPC-FRP composite columns is observed as the thickness of the FRP tube increases. The LCC of the GPC-FRP composite columns with a D/t ratio of 30 was almost (12.70 to 14.23%) greater than the GPC-FRP composite columns with a D/t ratio of 50. The GPC-FRP composite columns with a fibre orientation in the axial and hoop directions (0°) exhibit (8.4 to 11.39%) better performance than the columns with any other orientations (30° and 53°). The LCC of the GPC-FRP composite columns with a coefficient of friction of 0.25 and 0.5 are quite comparable. The axial stress distribution in the GPC-FRP composite columns with different tube thicknesses is explored in this research. This FE model is validated with the experimental results obtained by Kim et al., (2015) and the load and deflection are predicted with the validation error of 6.5 and 6.1%, respectively.

Woven Natural Fibre Reinforced Composite Materials for Medical Imaging.

Project description:Repeatable patient positioning is key to minimising the burden on planning radiotherapy treatment. There are very few materials commercially available which are suitable for use in all common imaging and treatment modalities such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), X-Ray computed tomography (CT) and radiotherapy. In this article, we present several such materials based on woven natural fibres embedded in a range of different resin materials which are suitable for such applications. By investigating a range of resins and natural fibre materials in combination and evaluating their performance in terms of MRI and X-Ray imaging, we show that a woven cotton material impregnated with a two-part epoxy resin provides a 15% improvement in passage of X-Rays and has no impact on the MRI signal (unlike the 40% MRI signal attenuation from carbon fibre), whilst also retaining a flexural modulus up to 71% of that of carbon fibre. These results demonstrate that natural fibre composites produced using such materials provide desirable properties for use in patient support and positioning devices for multi-modal imaging, without the need to significantly compromise on the strength of the material.

Mechanical and Tribological Behavior of Functionally Graded Unidirectional Glass Fiber-Reinforced Epoxy Composites.

Project description:This paper aims to assess experimentally the mechanical and tribological behavior of conventional and functionally graded (FG) polymeric matrix composites reinforced with continuous glass fibers. The small punch test (SPT) and a pin-on-disc device were used in the present work to examine the mechanical and wear behavior, respectively. The hand lay-up technique was used in the present investigation to manufacture the conventional and FG composites. Various wooden looms with different nailed spacing were employed to manufacture the FG composites. According to test type, the FG composite is composed of four and ten layers, with a different glass fiber volume of fraction (Vf%) for each layer. In addition, the finite element simulation based on Hashin's failure criterion and cohesive zone modeling was used to show the progressive failure and give more explanation regarding the flexural behavior of such composites. The present results indicate that the wear rate of an FG composite could be affected by many factors, including the disk speed, applied load, the composite layers number, and average glass fiber volume fraction. On the other hand, the arrangement of layers in the composite materials by variation of Vf% for each layer can improve the wear rate and value of the ultimate load before the fracture of the composite material when subjected to SPT. The experimental and numerical results for all SPT specimens showed that the fracture of the SPT specimens began beneath the punch tip and grew along the fiber direction. The ultimate flexural capacity of FG composites increased by 30% compared with the conventional composites.

Scanning electron microscopy datasets for local fibre volume fraction determination in non-crimp glass-fibre reinforced composites.

Project description:The fatigue damage evolution depends on the local fibre volume fraction as observed in the co-submitted publication [1]. Conventionally, fibre volume fractions are determined as an averaged overall fibre volume fraction determined from small cuts of the laminate. Alternatively, automatically stitching of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images can make high-resolution scans of large cross-section area with large contrast between the polymer and glass-fibre phase. Therefore, local distribution of the fibre volume fraction can be characterised automatically using such scan-data. The two datasets presented here cover two large Field of Views scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images. The two images is generated from between 1200 and 1800 high-resolution scan pictures which have been stitched into two high-resolution tif-files. The resolution corresponds to between 700 and 5000 pixels covering each fibre. The datasets are coming from two different non-crimp fabric glass fibre reinforced epoxy composites typically used in the wind turbine industry. Depending on the regions analysed, fibre volume fraction in the range of 50-85% is found. The maximum local fibre volume fraction is found averaging the local fibre volume fraction over 5 × 5 fibre diameter (80 × 80 µm2) areas. The local fibre volume fraction has been used in the analysis performed in [1].

Scalable MXene and PEDOT-CNT Nanocoatings for Fibre-Reinforced Composite De-Icing.

Project description:In this study, the de-icing performance is investigated between traditional carbon fibre-based coatings and novel MXene and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-coated single-walled carbon nanotube (PEDOT-CNT) nanocoatings, based on simple and scalable coating application. The thickness and morphology of the coatings are investigated using atomic force microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Adhesion strength, as well as electrical properties, are evaluated on rough and glossy surfaces of the composite. The flexibility and electrical sensitivity of the coatings are studied under three-point bending. Additionally, the influence of ambient temperature on coating's electrical resistance is investigated. Finally, thermal imaging and Joule heating are analysed with high-accuracy infrared cameras. Under the same power density, the increase in average temperature is 84% higher for MXenes and 117% for PEDOT-CNT, when compared with fibre-based coatings. Furthermore, both nanocoatings result in up to three times faster de-icing. These easily processable nanocoatings offer fast and efficient de-icing for large composite structures such as wind turbine blades without adding any significant weight.

Optical Fiber Embedded in Epoxy Glass Unidirectional Fiber Composite System.

Project description:We aimed to embed silica optical fibers in composites (epoxy vinyl ester matrix reinforced with E-glass unidirectional fibers in mass fraction of 60%) in order to further monitor the robustness of civil engineering structures (such as bridges). A simple system was implemented using two different silica optical fibers (F1-double coating of 172 µm diameter and F2-single coating of 101.8 µm diameter respectively). The optical fibers were dynamically tensile tested and Weibull plots were traced. Interfacial adhesion stress was determined using pull-out test and stress values were correlated to fracture mechanisms based on SEM observations. In the case of the optical fiber (OF) (F1)/resin system and OF (F1)/composite system, poor adhesion was reported that may be correlated to interface fracture at silica core level. Relevant applicable results were determined for OF (F2)/composite system.

Data on acoustic behaviour of coconut fibre-reinforced concrete.

Project description:The data presented in this research show the results of the experimental study of acoustic behaviour of coconut fibre-reinforced concrete (CFRC). The CFRC was added in percentages of 0.25%, 0.5%, 0.75% and 1% of cement. The acoustic test was conducted to determine the amount of sound that can be absorbed by the fibre. The data showed that the concrete reinforced with coconut fibre had the highest sound absorptive power, of which fibre treated absorbed more sound than other fibres, this is because washing of fibre increase the lignin content which is responsible for the sound absorbing property. The data also showed that the curing time had no effect on the absorbing property of the CFRC. The data presented will be useful in the construction of sound proof reinforced concrete slabs, walls and other elements.

Multiscale Polymer Dynamics in Hierarchical Carbon Nanotube Grafted Glass Fiber Reinforced Composites.

Project description:Carbon nanotube (CNT) grafted glass fiber reinforced epoxy nanocomposites (GFRP) present a range of stiffnesses (MPa to GPa) and length scales (μm to nm) at the fiber-matrix interface. The contribution of functionalized CNT networks to the local and bulk polymer dynamics is studied here by using a combination of torsion dynamical mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA), positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS), and neutron scattering (NS) measurements. DMTA measurements highlight a reduction in the storage modulus (G') in the rubbery region and an asymmetric broadening of the loss modulus (G″) peak in the α-transition region. NS measurements show a suppressed hydrogen mean-square displacement (MSD) in the presence of glass fibers but a higher hydrogen MSD after grafting functionalized CNTs onto fiber surfaces. PALS measurements show greater free volume characteristics in the presence of the functionalized CNT modified composites, supporting the view that these interface layers increase polymer mobility. While NS and DMTA are sensitive to different modes of chain dynamics, the localization of functionalized nanotubes at the fiber interface is found to affect the distribution of polymer relaxation modes without significantly altering the thermally activated relaxation processes.

Ex-situ X-ray computed tomography data for a non-crimp fabric based glass fibre composite under fatigue loading.

Project description:The data published with this article are high resolution X-ray computed tomography (CT) data obtained during an ex-situ fatigue test of a coupon test specimen made from a non-crimp fabric based glass fibre composite similar to those used for wind turbine blades. The fatigue test was interrupted four times for X-ray CT examination during the fatigue life of the considered specimen. All the X-ray CT experiments were performed in the region where unidirectional fibre fractures first became visible, and thereby include the damage progression in 3D in this specific region during fatigue loading of the specimen.

Enhancing cell adhesive and antibacterial activities of glass-fibre-reinforced polyetherketoneketone through Mg and Ag PIII.

Project description:Glass-fibre-reinforced polyetherketoneketone (PEKK-GF) shows great potential for application as a dental implant restoration material; however, its surface bioinertness and poor antibacterial properties limit its integration with peri-implant soft tissue, which is critical in the long-term success of implant restoration. Herein, functional magnesium (Mg) and silver (Ag) ions were introduced into PEKK-GF by plasma immersion ion implantation (PIII). Surface characterization confirmed that the surface morphology of PEKK-GF was not visibly affected by PIII treatment. Further tests revealed that PIII changed the wettability and electrochemical environment of the PEKK-GF surface and enabled the release of Mg2+ and Ag+ modulated by Giavanni effect. In vitro experiments showed that Mg/Ag PIII-treated PEKK-GF promoted the proliferation and adhesion of human gingival fibroblasts and upregulated the expression of adhesion-related genes and proteins. In addition, the treated samples inhibited the metabolic viability and adhesion of Streptococcus mutans and Porphyromonas gingivalis on their surfaces, distorting bacterial morphology. Mg/Ag PIII surface treatment improved the soft tissue integration and antibacterial activities of PEKK-GF, which will further support and broaden its adoption in dentistry.
