Efficient and selective hydrogenation of amides to alcohols and amines using a well-defined manganese-PNN pincer complex.

ABSTRACT: Novel well-defined NNP and PNP manganese pincer complexes have been synthetized and fully characterized. The catalyst Mn-2 containing an imidazolyaminolphosphino ligand shows high activity and selectivity in the hydrogenation of a wide range of secondary and tertiary amides to the corresponding alcohols and amines, under relatively mild conditions. For the first time, more challenging substrates like primary aromatic amides including an actual herbicide can also be hydrogenated using this earth-abundant metal-based pincer catalyst.

Project description:Borrowing hydrogen (or hydrogen autotransfer) reactions represent straightforward and sustainable C-N bond-forming processes. In general, precious metal-based catalysts are employed for this effective transformation. In recent years, the use of earth abundant and cheap non-noble metal catalysts for this process attracted considerable attention in the scientific community. Here we show that the selective N-alkylation of amines with alcohols can be catalysed by defined PNP manganese pincer complexes. A variety of substituted anilines are monoalkylated with different (hetero)aromatic and aliphatic alcohols even in the presence of other sensitive reducible functional groups. As a special highlight, we report the chemoselective monomethylation of primary amines using methanol under mild conditions.

Selective Room-Temperature Hydrogenation of Amides to Amines and Alcohols Catalyzed by a Ruthenium Pincer Complex and Mechanistic Insight.

Project description:We report a room-temperature protocol for the hydrogenation of various amides to produce amines and alcohols. Compared with most previous reports for this transformation, which use high temperatures (typically, 100-200 °C) and H2 pressures (10-100 bar), this system proceeds under extremely mild conditions (RT, 5-10 bar of H2). The hydrogenation is catalyzed by well-defined ruthenium-PNNH pincer complexes (0.5 mol %) with potential dual modes of metal-ligand cooperation. An unusual Ru-amidate complex was formed and crystallographically characterized. Mechanistic investigations indicate that the room-temperature hydrogenation proceeds predominantly via the Ru-N amido/amine metal-ligand cooperation.

Carbon dioxide hydrogenation catalysed by well-defined Mn(i) PNP pincer hydride complexes.

Project description:The catalytic reduction of carbon dioxide is of great interest for its potential as a hydrogen storage method and to use carbon dioxide as C-1 feedstock. In an effort to replace expensive noble metal-based catalysts with efficient and cheap earth-abundant counterparts, we report the first example of Mn(i)-catalysed hydrogenation of CO2 to HCOOH. The hydride Mn(i) catalyst [Mn(PNPNH-iPr)(H)(CO)2] showed higher stability and activity than its Fe(ii) analogue. TONs up to 10 000 and quantitative yields were obtained after 24 h using DBU as the base at 80 °C and 80 bar total pressure. At catalyst loadings as low as 0.002 mol%, TONs greater than 30 000 could be achieved in the presence of LiOTf as the co-catalyst, which are among the highest activities reported for base-metal catalysed CO2 hydrogenations to date.

Efficient Hydrogenation of Ketones and Aldehydes Catalyzed by Well-Defined Iron(II) PNP Pincer Complexes: Evidence for an Insertion Mechanism.

Project description:We have prepared and structurally characterized a new class of Fe(II) PNP pincer hydride complexes [Fe(PNP-iPr)(H)(CO)(L)] n (L = Br-, CH3CN, pyridine, PMe3, SCN-, CO, BH4-; n = 0, +1) based on the 2,6-diaminopyridine scaffold where the PiPr2 moieties of the PNP ligand are connected to the pyridine ring via NH and/or NMe spacers. Complexes [Fe(PNP-iPr)(H)(CO)(L)] n with labile ligands (L = Br-, CH3CN, BH4-) and NH spacers are efficient catalysts for the hydrogenation of both ketones and aldehydes to alcohols under mild conditions, while those containing inert ligands (L = pyridine, PMe3, SCN-, CO) are catalytically inactive. Interestingly, complex [Fe(PNPMe-iPr)(H)(CO)(Br)], featuring NMe spacers, is an efficient catalyst for the chemoselective hydrogenation of aldehydes. The first type of complexes involves deprotonation of the PNP ligand as well as heterolytic dihydrogen cleavage via metal-alkoxide cooperation, but no reversible aromatization/deprotonation of the PNP ligand. In the case of the N-methylated complex the mechanism remains unclear, but obviously does not allow bifunctional activation of dihydrogen. The experimental results complemented by DFT calculations strongly support an insertion of the C=O bond of the carbonyl compound into the Fe-H bond.

Non-Pincer-Type Manganese Complexes as Efficient Catalysts for the Hydrogenation of Esters.

Project description:Catalytic hydrogenation of carboxylic acid esters is essential for the green production of pharmaceuticals, fragrances, and fine chemicals. Herein, we report the efficient hydrogenation of esters with manganese catalysts based on simple bidentate aminophosphine ligands. Monoligated Mn PN complexes are particularly active for the conversion of esters into the corresponding alcohols at Mn concentrations as low as 0.2 mol % in the presence of sub-stoichiometric amounts of KOt Bu base.

Efficient Hydrogenation of N-Heterocycles Catalyzed by NNP-Manganese(I) Pincer Complexes at Ambient Temperature.

Project description:Manganese-catalyzed hydrogenation reactions have aroused widespread interest in recent years. Among the catalytic systems described, especially PNP- and NNP-Mn pincer catalysts have been reported for the hydrogenation of aldehydes, ketones, nitriles, aldimines and esters. Furthermore, NNP-Mn pincer compounds are efficient catalysts for the hydrogenolysis of less reactive amides, ureas, carbonates, and carbamates. Herein, the synthesis and application of specific imidazolylaminophosphine ligands and the corresponding Mn pincer complexes are described. These new catalysts have been characterized and studied by a combination of experimental and theoretical investigations, and their catalytic activities have been tested in several hydrogenation reactions with good to excellent performance. Especially, the reduction of N-heterocycles can be performed under very mild conditions.

Selective Hydrogenation of Aldehydes Using a Well-Defined Fe(II) PNP Pincer Complex in Biphasic Medium.

Project description:A biphasic process for the hydrogenation of aldehydes was developed using a well-defined iron (II) PNP pincer complex as model system to investigate the performance of various ionic liquids. A number of suitable hydrophobic ionic liquids based on the N(Tf)2 - anion were identified, allowing to immobilize the iron (II) catalyst in the ionic liquid layer and to facilitate the separation of the desired alcohols. Further studies showed that targeted Brønsted basic ionic liquids can eliminate the need of an external base to activate the catalyst.

Highly selective hydrogenation of amides catalysed by a molybdenum pincer complex: scope and mechanism.

Project description:A series of molybdenum pincer complexes has been shown for the first time to be active in the catalytic hydrogenation of amides. Among the tested catalysts, Mo-1a proved to be particularly well suited for the selective C-N hydrogenolysis of N-methylated formanilides. Notably, high chemoselectivity was observed in the presence of certain reducible groups including even other amides. The general catalytic performance as well as selectivity issues could be rationalized taking an anionic Mo(0) as the active species. The interplay between the amide C[double bond, length as m-dash]O reduction and the catalyst poisoning by primary amides accounts for the selective hydrogenation of N-methylated formanilides. The catalyst resting state was found to be a Mo-alkoxo complex formed by reaction with the alcohol product. This species plays two opposed roles - it facilitates the protolytic cleavage of the C-N bond but it encumbers the activation of hydrogen.

Using parahydrogen to hyperpolarize amines, amides, carboxylic acids, alcohols, phosphates, and carbonates.

Project description:Hyperpolarization turns weak nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) responses into strong signals, so normally impractical measurements are possible. We use parahydrogen to rapidly hyperpolarize appropriate 1H, 13C, 15N, and 31P responses of analytes (such as NH3) and important amines (such as phenylethylamine), amides (such as acetamide, urea, and methacrylamide), alcohols spanning methanol through octanol and glucose, the sodium salts of carboxylic acids (such as acetic acid and pyruvic acid), sodium phosphate, disodium adenosine 5'-triphosphate, and sodium hydrogen carbonate. The associated signal gains are used to demonstrate that it is possible to collect informative single-shot NMR spectra of these analytes in seconds at the micromole level in a 9.4-T observation field. To achieve these wide-ranging signal gains, we first use the signal amplification by reversible exchange (SABRE) process to hyperpolarize an amine or ammonia and then use their exchangeable NH protons to relay polarization into the analyte without changing its identity. We found that the 1H signal gains reach as high as 650-fold per proton, whereas for 13C, the corresponding signal gains achieved in a 1H-13C refocused insensitive nuclei enhanced by polarization transfer (INEPT) experiment exceed 570-fold and those in a direct-detected 13C measurement exceed 400-fold. Thirty-one examples are described to demonstrate the applicability of this technique.
