Platensimycin (PTM) and platencin (PTN) are potent and selective inhibitors of bacterial and mammalian fatty acid synthases. The regio- and stereospecificity of the ether oxygen atom in PTM, which PTN does not have, strongly contribute to the selectivity and potency of PTM.
