Azolyacetones as precursors to indoles and naphthofurans facilitated by microwave irradiation with simultaneous cooling.

ABSTRACT: Phthalimide reacted with phenacyl bromide under microwave irradiation to yield phenacyl isoindolidene-1,3-dione (3b), while 3a reacted with phenylhydrazine to yield the phenylhydrazone 4 that was readily converted into indoylphthalimide 8. Similarly N-benzotriazolylacetone (6a) reacted with phenyl hydrazine to yield the phenylhydrazone 7a that was converted into indoylbenzotriazole 9. Treatment of 8 with hydrazine hydrate afforded a mixture of phthalhydrazide 10 and 3-amino-2-methylindole (11). Reacting enaminone 13 with naphthoquinone (14) afforded the aryl naphthofuran 17. The possibility of the formation of the aldehyde 18 was excluded based on HMQC, which revealed that the carbonyl carbon is not linked to any hydrogen.

Preparation of Cu cluster catalysts by simultaneous cooling-microwave heating: application in radical cascade annulation.

Project description:One of the hallmarks of microwave irradiation is its selective heating mechanism. In the past 30 years, alternative designs of chemical reactors have been introduced, where the microwave (MW) absorber occupies a limited reactor volume but the surrounding environment is MW transparent. This advantage results in a different heating profile or even the possibility to quickly cool down the system. Simultaneous cooling-microwave heating has been largely adopted for organic chemical transformations. However, to the best of our knowledge there are no reports of its application in the field of nanocluster synthesis. In this work, we propose an innovative one-pot procedure for the synthesis of Cu nanoclusters. The cluster nucleation was selectively MW-activated inside the pores of a highly ordered mesoporous substrate. Once the nucleation event occurred, the crystallization reaction was instantaneously quenched, precluding the growth events and favoring the production of Cu clusters with a homogenous size distribution. Herein, we demonstrated that Cu nanoclusters could be successfully adopted for radical cascade annulations of N-alkoxybenzamides, resulting in various tricyclic and tetracyclic isoquinolones, which are widely present in lots of natural products and bioactive compounds. Compared to reported homogeneous methods, supported Cu nanoclusters provide a better platform for a green, sustainable and efficient heterogeneous approach for the synthesis of tricyclic and tetracyclic isoquinolones, avoiding a variety of toxic waste/byproducts and metal contamination in the final products.

Microwave-Facilitated SPOT-Synthesis of Antibacterial Dipeptoids.

Project description:With microwave irradiation, the submonomer synthesis of dipeptoids on functionalized cellulose can be accelerated with good yields and purity. Optimization provided a library of 96 dipeptoids. From these, 29 compounds were found with an antibacterial activity against MRSA at a concentration of 25 μM. Large nonpolar residues, such as undecylamine and dehydroabiethylamine, are the key components engendering the observed antibacterial activity of these peptoids.

Could Microwave Irradiation Cause Misfolding of Peptides?

Project description:Microwaves have been experimentally shown to affect the folding dynamics of peptides and proteins. Using molecular dynamics, we performed all-atom simulations of a model ?-peptide in aqueous solution where individual degrees of freedom of solvent molecules were decoupled to allow for investigation at non-equilibrium microwave-irradiated conditions. An elevated rotational temperature of the water medium was found to significantly affect the conformation of the peptide due to the weakened hydrogen-bonding interactions with the surrounding solvent molecules. Cluster analysis revealed that microwave irradiation can indeed act as a promoter in the formation of new misfolded peptide structures of the hairpin type, which are generally associated with the onset of several neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, Huntington's, and Creutzfeldt-Jakob diseases as well as certain cancer types such as amyloidosis.

Microwave irradiation affects gene expression in plants.

Project description:The physiological impact of nonionizing radiation has long been considered negligible. However, here we use a carefully calibrated stimulation system that mimics the characteristics (isotropy and homogeneity) of electromagnetic fields present in the environment to measure changes in a molecular marker (mRNA encoding the stress-related bZIP transcription factor), and show that low amplitude, short duration, 900 MHz EMF evokes the accumulation of this mRNA. Accumulation is rapid (peaking 5-15 min after stimulation) and strong (3.5-fold), and is similar to that evoked by mechanical stimulations.

Porous metal oxides derived from Cu-Al layered double hydroxide as an efficient heterogeneous catalyst for the Friedel-Crafts alkylation of indoles with benzaldehydes under microwave irradiation.

Project description:Four Cu-Mg-Al mixed metal oxides (MMO) were synthesized through the calcination of layered double hydroxides (LDHs). These catalysts were fully characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area (BET), and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer (ICP-OES). The catalytic efficiency of porous metal oxides derived from LDHs has been tested successfully for the synthesis of bis(indolyl)methanes via the Friedel-Crafts alkylation of indoles with aromatic aldehydes under solvent-free microwave irradiation. The Cu-Al MMO showed the best catalytic activity to produce the expected products up to 98% yield and 100% selectivity for only 20 min under solvent-free microwave irradiation. Moreover, the catalyst can be recovered quickly from the reaction mixture by ?ltration and reused several times without signi?cant loss of the reactivity.

HFIP-Promoted Bischler Indole Synthesis under Microwave Irradiation.

Multispectral camouflage for infrared, visible, lasers and microwave with radiative cooling.

Project description:Interminable surveillance and reconnaissance through various sophisticated multispectral detectors present threats to military equipment and manpower. However, a combination of detectors operating in different wavelength bands (from hundreds of nanometers to centimeters) and based on different principles raises challenges to the conventional single-band camouflage devices. In this paper, multispectral camouflage is demonstrated for the visible, mid-infrared (MIR, 3-5 and 8-14 μm), lasers (1.55 and 10.6 μm) and microwave (8-12 GHz) bands with simultaneous efficient radiative cooling in the non-atmospheric window (5-8 μm). The device for multispectral camouflage consists of a ZnS/Ge multilayer for wavelength selective emission and a Cu-ITO-Cu metasurface for microwave absorption. In comparison with conventional broadband low emittance material (Cr), the IR camouflage performance of this device manifests 8.4/5.9 °C reduction of inner/surface temperature, and 53.4/13.0% IR signal decrease in mid/long wavelength IR bands, at 2500 W ∙ m-2 input power density. Furthermore, we reveal that the natural convection in the atmosphere can be enhanced by radiation in the non-atmospheric window, which increases the total cooling power from 136 W ∙ m-2 to 252 W ∙ m-2 at 150 °C surface temperature. This work may introduce the opportunities for multispectral manipulation, infrared signal processing, thermal management, and energy-efficient applications.

Gold Nanoparticles and Microwave Irradiation Inhibit Beta-Amyloid Amyloidogenesis

Project description:Peptide-Gold nanoparticles selectively attached to β-amyloid protein (Aβ) amyloidogenic aggregates were irradiated with microwave. This treatment produces dramatic effects on the Aβ aggregates, inhibiting both the amyloidogenesis and the restoration of the amyloidogenic potential. This novel approach offers a new strategy to inhibit, locally and remotely, the amyloidogenic process, which could have application in Alzheimer’s disease therapy. We have studied the irradiation effect on the amyloidogenic process in the presence of conjugates peptide-nanoparticle by transmission electronic microscopy observations and by Thioflavine T assays to quantify the amount of fibrils in suspension. The amyloidogenic aggregates rather than the amyloid fibrils seem to be better targets for the treatment of the disease. Our results could contribute to the development of a new therapeutic strategy to inhibit the amyloidogenic process in Alzheimer’s disease.

Extraction of lotus fibres from lotus stems under microwave irradiation.

Project description:An efficient technology for preparing lotus fibres under microwave irradiation was developed. The lotus fibres were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectrometry, X-ray diffraction and thermogravimetry. Lotus fibres prepared are a kind of hollow fibres which are composed of a superfine fibre and an external shell. The effect of the treatment time with hydrogen peroxide under microwave irradiation on components, whiteness, moisture regain, removal rate of impurities, fineness, tensile strength and breaking elongation of lotus fibres was investigated. The results show that the cellulose content in lotus fibres increases with increase in treatment time. Whiteness and moisture regain of lotus fibres increase with increase in treatment time with hydrogen peroxide. The removal rate of impurities and the fineness of lotus fibres are improved after they are treated with hydrogen peroxide. Microwave irradiation is supposed to be an efficient method for producing lotus fibres.
