Allylation of functionalized aldehydes by potassium allyltrifluoroborate catalyzed by 18-crown-6 in aqueous media.

ABSTRACT: An efficient method for the allylation of aldehydes containing a broad range of functional groups using potassium allyltrifluoroborate is described. The reaction utilizes a catalytic amount of 18-C-6 in biphasic media under open atmosphere and room temperature to provide the corresponding homoallylic alcohols in high yields and without the necessity of any subsequent purification.

Project description:The asymmetric unit of the title compound, [K(C(3)H(3)N(2))(C(12)H(24)O(6))], is composed of a potassium cation bonded to the six O atoms of a crown ether mol-ecule and the two N atoms of a pyrazolate anion. The K?O distances range from 2.8416?(8) to 3.0025?(8)?Å, and the two K?N distances are 2.7441?(11) and 2.7654?(11)?Å. The K cation is displaced by 0.8437?(4)?Å from the best plane through the six O atoms. The latter plane is almost perpendicular to the plane of the pyrazolate ring [dihedral angle 83.93?(3)°].

Project description:Red crystals of the title salt, [K(C12H24O6)][Sb(C6H5)2], were obtained by the reaction of SbPh3, KSnBi and 18-crown-6 in liquid ammonia. The asymmetric unit contains one half of a [K(18-crown-6)](+) cation and one half of an SbPh2 (-) anion, with the central element lying on a twofold axis and a centre of inversion, respectively. In the crystal structure, the sequestered potassium cations show weak inter-actions with the ?-electrons of the phenyl groups of the SbPh2 (-) anion [shortest K?C distances = 3.190?(2) and 3.441?(2)?Å], leading to one-dimensional strands along the crystallographic c axis. These strands are aligned in a pseudo-hexa-gonal packing perpendicular to the ab plane.

Project description:The cyclometalated π-allyliridium 3,4-dinitro-C,O-benzoate complex modified by (R)- or (S)-Cl,MeO-BIPHEP promotes the transfer hydrogenative coupling of allyl acetate to β-stereogenic alcohols with good to excellent levels of catalyst-directed diastereoselectivity to furnish homoallylic alcohols. Remote electronic effects of the C,O-benzoate of the catalyst play a critical role in suppressing epimerization of the transient α-stereogenic aldehyde.

Crystal structures of two solvates of (18-crown-6)potassium acetate.

Project description:The crystal and mol-ecular strutures of two solvated forms of [K(18c6)]OAc (18c6 = 18-crown-6 = 1,4,7,10,13,16-hexa-oxa-cyclo-octa-decane and OAc = acetate) were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, namely (acetato-?2O,O')(1,4,7,10,13,16-hexa-oxa-cyclo-octa-decane-?6O)potassium dihydrate, [K(CH3COO)(C12H24O6)]·2H2O (1) and (acetato-?2O,O')aqua-(1,4,7,10,13,16-hexa-oxa-cyclo-octa-decane-?6O)potassium acetic acid monosolvate [K(CH3COO)(C12H24O6)(H2O)]·CH3COOH (2). In both compounds, the acetate anion is bonded to the potassium ion in a chelating fashion and the metal atom is consequently slightly displaced from the O6 plane of the crown ether. In the crystals, O-H?O hydrogen bonds lead to a polymeric ladder structure in the dihydrate 1, while the acetic acid hydrate 2 features inversion dimers.

Engaging Aldehydes in CuH-Catalyzed Reductive Coupling Reactions: Stereoselective Allylation with Unactivated 1,3-Diene Pronucleophiles.

Project description:Recently, CuH-catalyzed reductive coupling processes involving carbonyl compounds and imines have become attractive alternatives to traditional methods for stereoselective addition because of their ability to use readily accessible and stable olefins as surrogates for organometallic nucleophiles. However, the inability to use aldehydes, which usually reduce too rapidly in the presence of copper hydride complexes to be viable substrates, has been a major limitation. Shown here is that by exploiting relative concentration effects through kinetic control, this intrinsic reactivity can be inverted and the reductive coupling of 1,3-dienes with aldehydes achieved. Using this method, both aromatic and aliphatic aldehydes can be transformed into synthetically valuable homoallylic alcohols with high levels of diastereo- and enantioselectivities, and in the presence of many useful functional groups. Furthermore, using a combination of theoretical (DFT) and experimental methods, important mechanistic features of this reaction related to stereo- and chemoselectivities were uncovered.

In each [Cu(NCS)(3)](2-) anion, the Cu(I) atom is coordinated by three N atoms of thio-cyanate ligands in a trigonal-planar coordination geometry. Each [Cu(NCS)(3)](2-) anion bridges two [K(benzene-18-crown-6)](+) cations, with K-S distances of 3.317?(3) and 3.198?(3)?Å, and two [K(benzene-18-crown-6)](+) cations are linked across a crystallographic centre of inversion, with K-O distances of 2.903?(5)?Å.

Metal-Catalyzed Photooxidation of Flavones in Aqueous Media.

Project description:Soluble model compounds, such as flavones, are frequently employed in initial and mechanistic studies under homogeneous conditions in the search for effective bleaching catalysts for raw cotton. The relevance of model substrates, such as morin and chrysin, and especially their reactivity with manganese catalysts [i.e. in combination with 1,4,7-triazacyclononane (tacn) based ligands] applied in raw cotton bleaching with H2O2 in alkaline solutions is examined. We show that morin, used frequently as a model, is highly sensitive to oxidation with O2, by processes catalyzed by trace metal ions, that can be accelerated photochemically, although not involve generation of 1O2. The structurally related chrysin is not susceptible to such photo-accelerated oxidation with O2. Furthermore, chrysin is oxidized by H2O2 only in the presence of a Mn-tacn based catalyst, and does not undergo oxidation with O2 as terminal oxidant. Chrysin mimics the behavior of raw cotton's chromophores in their catalyzed oxidation with H2O2, and is likely a mechanistically relevant model compound for the study of transition metal catalysts for dye bleaching catalysts under homogeneous conditions.

Effect of 18-Crown-6 on Oxytocin Stability in Aqueous Buffer Solutions.

Project description:In this study, the effect of 18-crown-6 on the stability of oxytocin in aqueous solution was explored. The study found that while 12-crown-4 and 15-crown-5 do not stabilize oxytocin, 18-crown-6 does have a stabilizing effect in citrate/phosphate buffer at pH 4.5. However, in acetate buffer at the same pH, the presence of 18-crown-6 had a destabilizing effect, possibly leading to a different degradation pathway. Both the stabilizing and destabilizing effects, depending on the buffer used, are concentration dependent where a higher concentration of 18-crown-6 is linked to a stronger effect. It is hypothesized that this effect may be linked to 18-crown-6 binding to the protonated ammonium group of oxytocin. Upon changing the mobile phase used in high-performance liquid chromatography experiments, we observed evidence supporting this binding hypothesis. When an acidic mobile phase was used (0.01% trifluoroacetic acid (TFA)), a partial shift in oxytocin retention time was observed for samples in acetate buffers in the presence of 18-crown-6 when using a 150 mm column (C18). The amount of the peak that shifted depended on the 18-crown-6 concentration used. A similar shift in oxytocin peak retention time was observed for samples in both acetate and citrate/phosphate buffers when using a 250 mm column (C18), but the peak completely shifted in those samples. When using an even more acidic mobile phase (0.1% TFA), the oxytocin peaks all had the same retention time again. Ultraviolet and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy experiments also showed that the presence of 18-crown-6 has an observable effect on the resulting oxytocin spectra.

Project description:The title salt, [K(C(12)H(24)O(6))][Fe(C(8)H(12))(C(10)H(8))], is the only known naphthalene complex containing iron in a formally negative oxidation state. Each (naphthalene)(1,5-cod)ferrate(-I) anion is in contact with one (18-crown-6)potassium cation via K?C contacts to the outer four carbon atoms of the naphthalene ligand (cod = 1,5-cyclo-octa-diene, 18-crown-6 = 1,4,7,10,13,16-hexa-oxacyclo-octa-deca-ne). When using the midpoints of the coordinating olefin bonds, the overall geometry of the coordination sphere around iron can be best described as distorted tetra-hedral. The naphthalene fold angle between the plane of the iron-coordinating butadiene unit and the plane containing the exo-benzene moiety is 19.2?(1)°.

Dual cobalt-copper light-driven catalytic reduction of aldehydes and aromatic ketones in aqueous media.

Project description:We present an efficient, general, fast, and robust light-driven methodology based on earth-abundant elements to reduce aryl ketones, and both aryl and aliphatic aldehydes (up to 1400 TON). The catalytic system consists of a robust and well-defined aminopyridyl cobalt complex active for photocatalytic water reduction and the [Cu(bathocuproine)(Xantphos)](PF6) photoredox catalyst. The dual cobalt-copper system uses visible light as the driving-force and H2O and an electron donor (Et3N or iPr2EtN) as the hydride source. The catalytic system operates in aqueous mixtures (80-60% water) with high selectivity towards the reduction of organic substrates (>2000) vs. water reduction, and tolerates O2. High selectivity towards the hydrogenation of aryl ketones is observed in the presence of terminal olefins, aliphatic ketones, and alkynes. Remarkably, the catalytic system also shows unique selectivity for the reduction of acetophenone in the presence of aliphatic aldehydes. The catalytic system provides a simple and convenient method to obtain ?,?-deuterated alcohols. Both the observed reactivity and the DFT modelling support a common cobalt hydride intermediate. The DFT modelled energy profile for the [Co-H] nucleophilic attack to acetophenone and water rationalises the competence of [CoII-H] to reduce acetophenone in the presence of water. Mechanistic studies suggest alternative mechanisms depending on the redox potential of the substrate. These results show the potential of the water reduction catalyst [Co(OTf)(Py2Tstacn)](OTf) (1), (Py2Tstacn = 1,4-di(picolyl)-7-(p-toluenesulfonyl)-1,4,7-triazacyclononane, OTf = trifluoromethanesulfonate anion) to develop light-driven selective organic transformations and fine solar chemicals.
