Project description:The reduction of dioxygen in the presence of sodium cations can be tuned to give either sodium superoxide or sodium peroxide discharge products at the electrode surface. Control of the mechanistic direction of these processes may enhance the ability to tailor the energy density of sodium-oxygen batteries (NaO2 : 1071?Wh?kg(-1) and Na2 O2 : 1505?Wh?kg(-1) ). Through spectroelectrochemical analysis of a range of non-aqueous solvents, we describe the dependence of these processes on the electrolyte solvent and subsequent interactions formed between Na(+) and O2 (-) . The solvents ability to form and remove [Na(+) -O2 (-) ]ads based on Gutmann donor number influences the final discharge product and mechanism of the cell. Utilizing surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy and electrochemical techniques, we demonstrate an analysis of the response of Na-O2 cell chemistry with sulfoxide, amide, ether, and nitrile electrolyte solvents.

Project description:Sensing anionic species in competitive aqueous media is a well-recognised challenge to long-term applications across a multitude of fields. Herein, we report a comprehensive investigation of the electrochemical anion sensing performance of novel halogen bonding (XB) and hydrogen bonding (HB) bis-ferrocene-(iodo)triazole receptors in solution and at self-assembled monolayers (SAMs), in a range of increasingly competitive aqueous organic solvent media (ACN/H2 O). In solution, the XB sensor notably outperforms the HB sensor, with substantial anion recognition induced cathodic voltammetric responses of the ferrocene/ferrocenium redox couple persisting even in highly competitive aqueous solvent media of 20 % water content. The response to halides, in particular, shows a markedly lower sensitivity to increasing water content associated with a unique halide selectivity at unprecedented levels of solvent polarity. The HB sensor, in contrast, generally displayed a preference towards oxoanions. A significant surface-enhancement effect was observed for both XB/HB receptive films in all solvent systems, whereby the HB sensor generally displayed larger responses towards oxoanions than its halogen bonding analogue.

Project description:Here we report an efficient Cu(i)-mediated C-H amination reaction with oximes as amino donors to introduce NH2 groups directly. Various strongly coordinating heterocycles including quinoline, pyrimidine, pyrazine, pyrazole and triazole were tolerated well. The potential utility was further demonstrated in a late-stage modification of telmisartan (an antagonist for the angiotensin II receptor).

Project description:Injectable filters permeable to water but impermeable to non-polar solvents were developed to contain non-aqueous phase liquids (NAPL) in contaminated aquifers, hence protecting downstream receptors during NAPL remediation. Filters were produced by injecting aqueous solutions of 0.01% chitosan, hydroxyethylcellulose and quaternized hydroxyethylcellulose into sand columns, followed by rinsing with water. Polymer sorption onto silica was verified using a quartz-crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring. Fluorescence and gas chromatography mass spectroscopy showed low ppm range concentrations of non-polar solvents (e.g., hexane and toluene) in water eluted from the filters (in the absence of emulsifiers). The contact angles between polymer-coated surfaces and hexane or toluene were > 90°, indicating surface oleophobicity. Organic, polar solvents (e.g. tetrahydrofuran and tetrachloroethylene, TCE) were not separated from water. The contact angles between polymer-coated surfaces and TCE was also > 90°. However, the contact area with polymer coated surfaces was greater for TCE than non-polar solvents, suggesting higher affinity between TCE and the surfaces. Emulsifiers can be used to facilitate NAPL extraction from aquifers. Emulsion separation efficiency depended on the emulsifier used. Emulsions were not separated with classical surfactants (e.g. Tween 20 and oleic acid) or alkaline zein solutions. Partial emulsion separation was achieved with humic acids and zein particles.

Project description:Charge-transfer-to-solvent states in aqueous halides are ideal systems for studying the electron-transfer dynamics to the solvent involving a complex interplay between electronic excitation and solvent polarization. Despite extensive experimental investigations, a full picture of the charge-transfer-to-solvent dynamics has remained elusive. Here, we visualise the intricate interplay between the dynamics of the electron and the solvent polarization occurring in this process. Through the combined use of ab initio molecular dynamics and machine learning methods, we investigate the structure, dynamics and free energy as the excited electron evolves through the charge-transfer-to-solvent process, which we characterize as a sequence of states denoted charge-transfer-to-solvent, contact-pair, solvent-separated, and hydrated electron states, depending on the distance between the iodine and the excited electron. Our assignment of the charge-transfer-to-solvent states is supported by the good agreement between calculated and measured vertical binding energies. Our results reveal the charge transfer process in terms of the underlying atomic processes and mechanisms.

Project description:Hierarchical molecular assembly is a fundamental strategy for manufacturing protein structures in nature. However, to translate this natural strategy into advanced digital manufacturing like three-dimensional (3D) printing remains a technical challenge. This work presents a 3D printing technique with silk fibroin to address this challenge, by rationally designing an aqueous salt bath capable of directing the hierarchical assembly of the protein molecules. This technique, conducted under aqueous and ambient conditions, results in 3D proteinaceous architectures characterized by intrinsic biocompatibility/biodegradability and robust mechanical features. The versatility of this method is shown in a diversity of 3D shapes and a range of functional components integrated into the 3D prints. The manufacturing capability is exemplified by the single-step construction of perfusable microfluidic chips which eliminates the use of supporting or sacrificial materials. The 3D shaping capability of the protein material can benefit a multitude of biomedical devices, from drug delivery to surgical implants to tissue scaffolds. This work also provides insights into the recapitulation of solvent-directed hierarchical molecular assembly for artificial manufacturing.

Project description:Rechargeable aqueous zinc batteries (RAZBs) are promising for large-scale energy storage because of their superiority in addressing cost and safety concerns. However, their practical realization is hampered by issues including dendrite growth, poor reversibility and low coulombic efficiency (CE) of Zn anodes due to parasitic reactions. Here, we report a non-concentrated aqueous electrolyte composed of 2 m zinc trifluoromethanesulfonate (Zn(OTf)2) and the organic dimethyl carbonate (DMC) additive to stabilize the Zn electrochemistry. Unlike the case in conventional aqueous electrolytes featuring typical Zn[H2O]6 2+ solvation, a solvation sheath of Zn2+ with the co-participation of the DMC solvent and OTf- anion is found in the formulated H2O + DMC electrolyte, which contributes to the formation of a robust ZnF2 and ZnCO3-rich interphase on Zn. The resultant Zn anode exhibits a high average CE of Zn plating/stripping (99.8% at an areal capacity of 2.5 mA h cm-2) and dendrite-free cycling over 1000 cycles. Furthermore, the H2O + DMC electrolytes sustain stable operation of RAZBs pairing Zn anodes with diverse cathode materials such as vanadium pentoxide, manganese dioxide, and zinc hexacyanoferrate. Rational electrolyte design with organic solvent additives would promote building better aqueous batteries.

Project description:In this study, the anion-binding bis(cyclopeptide) 2 is introduced, which dissolves freely in water, affording up to 10 mM concentrations, thanks to triethylene glycol-derived substituents in the cyclopeptide subunits and the linker connecting them. Binding studies provided evidence that the anion affinity previously demonstrated for less-soluble analogs of this compound is retained under highly competitive aqueous conditions. The highest affinity in water was observed for iodide, closely followed by sulfate anions, whereas binding of soft and weakly coordinating anions could not be observed. The anion selectivity of 2 thus differs from that of other recently described receptors, which also do not require electrostatic or coordinative interactions for anion binding in water but typically fail to bind strongly coordinating sulfate anions. The ability of 2 to overcome sulfate hydration is attributed to the special mode of binding, combining direct N-H···A- interactions with the release of water molecules from the receptor cavity. The characterization of the anion binding of 2 and a related bis(cyclopeptide) in a variety of different solvents and aqueous solvent mixtures furthermore allowed the correlation of the binding properties with solvent parameters. These analyses provided qualitative and even quantitative insights into the solvent properties and solvation phenomena that mainly affect anion complexation.

Project description:Enzymatic peptide synthesis is a powerful alternative to solid-phase methods, as enzymes can have high regio- and stereoselectivity and high yield and require mild reaction conditions. This is beneficial in formulation research due to the rise of nucleic acid therapies. Peptide nucleic acids (PNAs) have a high affinity toward DNA and RNA, and their solubility and cellular delivery can be improved via conjugation to peptides. Here, we designed and assessed the viability of the papain enzyme to conjugate four PNA-peptide models in water and an organic solvent using QM/MM metadynamics. We found that the reactions in water yield better results, where three conjugates could potentially be synthesized by the enzyme, with the first transition state as the rate-limiting step, with an associated energy of 14.53 kcal mol-1, although with a slight endergonic profile. The results highlight the importance of considering the enzyme pockets and different substrate acceptivities and contribute to developing greener, direct, and precise synthetic routes for nucleic acid-based therapies. By exploring the enzyme's potential in conjunction with chemical synthesis, current protocols can be simplified for the synthesis of longer nucleic acids and peptide sequences (and, by extension, proteins) from smaller oligo or peptide blocks.
