Isolation of a Cyclic (Alkyl)(amino)germylene.

ABSTRACT: A 1,4-addition of a dichlorogermylene dioxane complex with ?,?-unsaturated imine 1 gave a dichlorogermane derivative 2 bearing a GeC?N five-membered ring skeleton. By reducing 2 with KC?, cyclic (alkyl)(amino)germylene 3 was synthesized and fully characterized. Germylene 3 readily reacted with TEMPO, N?O and S?, producing the 1:2 adduct 4, the oxo-bridged dimer 5 and the sulfido-bridged dimer 6, respectively.

Project description:The long-sought carbene-bismuthinidene, (CAAC)Bi(Ph), has been synthesized. Notably, this represents both the first example of a carbene-stabilized subvalent bismuth complex and the extension of the carbene-pnictinidene concept to a non-toxic metallic element (Bi). The bonding has been investigated by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies and DFT calculations. This report also highlights the hitherto unknown reducing and ligand transfer capability of a beryllium(0) complex.

Basic Reactivity Pattern of a Cyclic Disilylated Germylene.

Project description:In order to estimate the reactivity of disilylated germylene phosphine adducts, a cyclic version of this compound class was reacted with a number of different reagents. Reactions with the chalcogens sulfur, selenium, and tellurium led to dimers of the heavy ketone analogues. Reactions with water and ethyl bromide proceeded to give the respective oxidized germanol and germyl bromide. Two different reactions with alkynes were observed which led either to a germacyclopropene, by addition of tolane to the germylene, or to a silagermacyclobutene, likely formed by addition of the alkyne across a silagermene. Reaction via the silagermene was also observed in the reaction with benzophenone. Reaction of a germylene phosphine adduct with GeCl2·(dioxane) provided insertion of the silylated germylene into a Ge-Cl bond, leading to a germylated chlorogermylene phosphine adduct.

Me CAAC=N- : A Cyclic (Alkyl)(Amino)Carbene Imino Ligand.

Project description:A cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbene (CAAC) has been shown to react with a covalent azide similar to the Staudinger reaction. The reaction of Me CAAC with trimethylsilyl azide afforded the N-silylated 2-iminopyrrolidine (Me CAAC=NSiMe3 ), which was fully characterized. This compound undergoes hydrolysis to afford the 2-iminopyrrolidine and trimethylsiloxane which co-crystallize as a hydrogen-bonded adduct. The N-silylated 2-iminopyrrolidine was used to transfer the novel pyrrolidine-2-iminato ligand onto both main-group and transition-metal centers. The reaction of the tetrabromodiborane bis(dimethyl sulfide) adduct with two equivalents of Me CAAC=NSiMe3 afforded the disubstituted diborane. The reaction of Me CAAC=NSiMe3 with TiCl4 and CpTiCl3 afforded Me CAAC=NTiCl3 and Me CAAC=NTiCl2 Cp, respectively.

Gold(I) and Gold(III) Complexes of Cyclic (Alkyl)(amino)carbenes.

Project description:The chemistry of Au(I) complexes with two types of cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbene (CAAC) ligands has been explored, using the sterically less demanding dimethyl derivative Me2CAAC and the 2-adamantyl ligand AdCAAC. The conversion of (AdCAAC)AuCl into (AdCAAC)AuOH by treatment with KOH is significantly accelerated by the addition of tBuOH. (AdCAAC)AuOH is a convenient starting material for the high-yield syntheses of (AdCAAC)AuX complexes by acid/base and C-H activation reactions (X = OAryl, CF3CO2, N(Tf)2, C2Ph, C6F5, C6HF4, C6H2F3, CH2C(O)C6H4OMe, CH(Ph)C(O)Ph, CH2SO2Ph), while the cationic complexes [(AdCAAC)AuL]+ (L = CO, CN t Bu) and (AdCAAC)AuCN were obtained by chloride substitution from (AdCAAC)AuCl. The reactivity toward variously substituted fluoroarenes suggests that (AdCAAC)AuOH is able to react with C-H bonds with pKa values lower than about 31.5. This, together with the spectroscopic data, confirm the somewhat stronger electron-donor properties of CAAC ligands in comparison to imidazolylidene-type N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs). In spite of this, the oxidation of Me2CAAC and AdCAAC gold compounds is much less facile. Oxidations proceed with C-Au cleavage by halogens unless light is strictly excluded. The oxidation of (AdCAAC)AuCl with PhICl2 in the dark gives near-quantitative yields of (AdCAAC)AuCl3, while [Au(Me2CAAC)2]Cl leads to trans-[AuCl2(Me2CAAC)2]Cl. In contrast to the chemistry of imidazolylidene-type gold NHC complexes, oxidation products containing Au-Br or Au-I bonds could not be obtained; whereas the reaction with CsBr3 cleaves the Au-C bond to give mixtures of [AdCAAC-Br]+[AuBr2]- and [(AdCAAC-Br)]+ [AuBr4]-, the oxidation of (AdCAAC)AuI with I2 leads to the adduct (AdCAAC)AuI·I2. Irrespective of the steric demands of the CAAC ligands, their gold complexes proved more resistant to oxidation and more prone to halogen cleavage of the Au-C bonds than gold(I) complexes of imidazole-based NHC ligands.

CAAC-IPr*: easily accessible, highly sterically-hindered cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbenes.

Project description:IPr* (IPr* = 1,3-bis(2,6-bis(diphenylmethyl)-4-methylphenyl)imidazol-2-ylidene) has emerged as a powerful highly hindered and sterically-flexible ligand platform for transition-metal catalysis. CAACs (CAAC = cyclic (al-kyl)(amino)carbenes) have gained major attention as strongly electron-rich carbon analogues of NHCs (NHC = N-heterocyclic carbene) with broad applications in both industry and academia. Herein, we report a merger of CAAC ligands with highly-hindered IPr*. The efficient synthesis, electronic characterization and application in model Cu-catalyzed hydroboration of alkynes is described. The ligands are strongly electron-rich, bulky and flexible around the N-Ar wingtip. The availability of various IPr* and CAAC templates offers a significant potential to expand the existing arsenal of NHC ligands to electron-rich bulky architectures with critical applications in metal stabilization and catalysis.

Cyclic alkyl amino carbene (CAAC) ruthenium complexes as remarkably active catalysts for ethenolysis.

Project description:An expanded family of ruthenium-based metathesis catalysts bearing cyclic alkyl amino carbene (CAAC) ligands was prepared. These catalysts exhibited exceptional activity in the ethenolysis of the seed-oil derivative methyl oleate. In many cases, catalyst turnover numbers (TONs) of more than 100,000 were achieved, at a catalyst loading of only 3?ppm. Remarkably, the most active catalyst system was able to achieve a TON of 340,000, at a catalyst loading of only 1?ppm. This is the first time a series of metathesis catalysts has exhibited such high performance in cross-metathesis reactions employing ethylene gas, with activities sufficient to render ethenolysis applicable to the industrial-scale production of linear ?-olefins (LAOs) and other terminal-olefin products.

Metal-free dehydropolymerisation of phosphine-boranes using cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbenes as hydrogen acceptors.

Project description:The divalent carbene carbon centre in cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbenes (CAACs) is known to exhibit transition-metal-like insertion into E-H ?-bonds (E?=?H, N, Si, B, P, C, O) with formation of new, strong C-E and C-H bonds. Although subsequent transformations of the products represent an attractive strategy for metal-free synthesis, few examples have been reported. Herein we describe the dehydrogenation of phosphine-boranes, RR'PH·BH3, using a CAAC, which behaves as a stoichiometric hydrogen acceptor to release monomeric phosphinoboranes, [RR'PBH2], under mild conditions. The latter species are transient intermediates that either polymerise to the corresponding polyphosphinoboranes, [RR'PBH2]n (R?=?Ph; R'?=?H, Ph or Et), or are trapped in the form of CAAC-phosphinoborane adducts, CAAC·H2BPRR' (R?=?R'?=?tBu; R?=?R'?=?Mes). In contrast to previously established methods such as transition metal-catalysed dehydrocoupling, which only yield P-monosubstituted polymers, [RHPBH2]n, the CAAC-mediated route also provides access to P-disubstituted polymers, [RR'PBH2]n (R?=?Ph; R'?=?Ph or Et).

Mechanistic Understanding of the Heterogeneous, Rhodium-Cyclic (Alkyl)(Amino)Carbene-Catalyzed (Fluoro-)Arene Hydrogenation.

Project description:Recently, chemoselective methods for the hydrogenation of fluorinated, silylated, and borylated arenes have been developed providing direct access to previously unattainable, valuable products. Herein, a comprehensive study on the employed rhodium-cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbene (CAAC) catalyst precursor is disclosed. Mechanistic experiments, kinetic studies, and surface-spectroscopic methods revealed supported rhodium(0) nanoparticles (NP) as the active catalytic species. Further studies suggest that CAAC-derived modifiers play a key role in determining the chemoselectivity of the hydrogenation of fluorinated arenes, thus offering an avenue for further tuning of the catalytic properties.

Project description:The state-of-the-art in olefin metathesis is application of N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-containing ruthenium alkylidenes for the formation of internal C=C bonds and of cyclic alkyl amino carbene (CAAC)-containing ruthenium benzylidenes in the production of terminal olefins. A straightforward synthesis of bis(CAAC)Ru indenylidene complexes, which are highly effective in the formation of both terminal and internal C=C bonds at loadings as low as 1 ppm, is now reported.
