Taxonomic studies of Glochidion (Phyllanthaceae) from the Indo-China Peninsula (II): The identities of G.anamiticum and G.annamense.

ABSTRACT: The names Glochidionanamiticum (Kuntze) Kuntze ex Merrill and G.annamense Beille were previously reduced to synonyms of G.eriocarpum Champ. ex Benth. However, literature examination and morphological comparison suggest that G.annamense is conspecific with G.anamiticum and the species can be readily distinguished from G.eriocarpum by its styles connate into a long cylindric column and up to 3 mm long, ovaries usually 3-locular, stigma usually 3-lobed, capsules pubescent and usually 6-grooved, persistent styles 3?4 mm long. Thus, the specific status of G.anamiticum is here reinstated and G. annamense is treated as its synonym.

Project description:Based on morphological studies performed on live plants in the field and specimens deposited in herbaria, a new species, Glochidion shanense Gang Yao & Shixiao Luo (Phyllantheae, Phyllanthaceae), is here described and illustrated. The species is morphologically most similar to G. ellipticum Wight, but can be distinguished from the latter by having hairy branchlets, longer pedicels, uniseriate and narrowly triangular sepals of female flowers, 4-5-locular ovaries, stout and cylindric persistent style on fruits.

Taxonomic revision of the genus Glochidion (Phyllanthaceae) in Taiwan, China.

Project description:A comprehensive taxonomic revision of the genus Glochidion J.R. Forst. & G. Forst. from Taiwan in China was carried out based on the examination of herbarium specimens and filed investigations. Eight species and three varieties are recognized, including a new species endemic to Taiwan, G. lanyuense Gang Yao & S.X. Luo, which is described and illustrated. Three names, viz. G. chademenosocarpum Hayata, G. kusukusense Hayata, and G. ovalifolium F.Y. Lu & Y.S. Hsu, are reduced to the new synonyms of G. rubrum Blume, G. lanceolatum Hayata, and G. ellipticum Wight, respectively. Two names, viz. G. lanceolatum Hayata and G. suishaense Hayata, are lectotypified here. A key to the Glochidion species in Taiwan is provided.

Isolation and characterization of 11 microsatellite markers for Glochidion acuminatum (Phyllanthaceae).

Project description:UNLABELLED: PREMISE OF THE STUDY:Microsatellite markers were developed for Glochidion acuminatum (Phyllanthaceae) to investigate pollen dispersal distances and thereby to assess the effectiveness of specialized Epicephala moths as pollinators. • METHODS AND RESULTS:Using next-generation sequencing, 11 polymorphic microsatellite primer pairs were developed for G. acuminatum. The primer pairs were tested on 49 individuals from two populations in Japan. The number of alleles per locus ranged from two to 13, and the expected heterozygosity ranged from 0.12 to 0.85. Probability of identity for all loci combined was lower than 1.27 × 10(7). • CONCLUSIONS:The microsatellite markers developed in this study will be useful for evaluating the benefit of specialized Epicephala moth pollination to Glochidion plants.

Project description:Four new Epicephala species that feed on the seeds of Glochidionsphaerogynum (Phyllanthaceae) from Yinggeling Mountain Nature Reserves in Hainan Province of China are described: Epicephaladomina sp. n., Epicephalaimpolliniferens sp. n., Epicephalaangustisaccula sp. n. and Epicephalacamurella sp. n. The latter two species are also associated with Glochidionwrightii. Photographs of adults and genital structures are provided.

Taxonomic revision and phylogenetic position of the flying squirrel genus Biswamoyopterus (Mammalia, Rodentia, Sciuridae, Pteromyini) on the northern Indo-China peninsula.

Project description:The flying squirrel genus Biswamoyopterus (Rodentia: Sciuridae: Pteromyini) was once considered to contain three species, Biswamoyopterus biswasi from northeastern India, B. laoensis from central Laos and B. gaoligongensis from southwest China, all identified from morphological characteristics of one or two specimens. However, based on similar morphological characteristics of two samples of the genus Biswamoyopterus collected recently from northern Laos and northern Myanmar, and the small genetic distances on mitochondrial DNA and nuclear DNA between them, the results strongly support these two samples as representatives of the same species. The phylogenetic analyses strongly support Biswamoyopterus as an independent genus of Pteromyini, as a sister group to Aeromys. Biswamoyopterus biswasi is distributed in the northern Indo-China peninsula, where it is exposed to a series of threats, such as intense hunting activity, illegal trade, and rapid habitat loss; this should warrant its classification as critically endangered according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List criteria. Here, the molecular data for genus Biswamoyopterus and two new specimen records from northern Laos and northern Myanmar are presented.

Simultaneous hyperaccumulation of nickel and cobalt in the tree Glochidion cf. sericeum (Phyllanthaceae): elemental distribution and chemical speciation.

Project description:Hyperaccumulation is generally highly specific for a single element, for example nickel (Ni). The recently-discovered hyperaccumulator Glochidion cf. sericeum (Phyllanthaceae) from Malaysia is unusual in that it simultaneously accumulates nickel and cobalt (Co) with up to 1500 μg g-1 foliar of both elements. We set out to determine whether distribution and associated ligands for Ni and Co complexation differ in this species. We postulated that Co hyperaccumulation coincides with Ni hyperaccumulation operating on similar physiological pathways. However, the ostensibly lower tolerance for Co at the cellular level results in the exudation of Co on the leaf surface in the form of lesions. The formation of such lesions is akin to phytotoxicity responses described for manganese (Mn). Hence, in contrast to Ni, which is stored principally inside the foliar epidermal cells, the accumulation response to Co consists of an extracellular mechanism. The chemical speciation of Ni and Co, in terms of the coordinating ligands involved and principal oxidation state, is similar and associated with carboxylic acids (citrate for Ni and tartrate or malate for Co) and the hydrated metal ion. Some oxidation to Co3+, presumably on the surface of leaves after exudation, was observed.

Indo-China monsoon indices.

Project description:Myanmar and Thailand often experience severe droughts and floods that cause irreparable damage to the socio-economy condition of both countries. In this study, the Southeastern Asian Summer Monsoon variation is found to be the main element of interannual precipitation variation of the region, more than the El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO). The ENSO influence is evident only during the boreal spring season. Although the monsoon is the major factor, the existing Indian Monsoon Index (IMI) and Western North Pacific Monsoon Index (WNPMI) do not correlate well with the precipitation variation in the study regions of Southern Myanmar and Thailand. Therefore, a new set of indices is developed based on the regional monsoon variations and presented here for the first time. Precipitation variations in Southern Myanmar and Thailand differ as well as the elements affecting the precipitation variations in different seasons. So, separate indices are proposed for each season for Southern Myanmar and Thailand. Four new monsoon indices based on wind anomalies are formulated and are named as the Indochina Monsoon Indices. These new indices correlate better with the precipitation variations of the study region as compared to the existing IMI and WNPMI.

Multiple Coexisting Species and the First Known Case of a Cheater in Epicephala (Gracillariidae) Associated with a Species of Glochidion (Phyllanthaceae) in Tropical Asia.

Project description:Glochidion plants and Epicephala moths played different roles and kept the balance in the mutualism. We studied the four coexisting Epicephala species on Glochidion sphaerogynum in detail and reconstructed the phylogenic tree of 40 Gracillariidae species. The results showed that one of them (Epicephala impolliniferens) did not pollinate G. sphaerogynum, because of lacking the specialized structure of carrying pollen. These results suggested that E. impolliniferens acted as a 'cheater' in the system. The phylogenetic analyses suggested that E. impolliniferens derived from a pollinating species, and had secondarily gave up the ability to pollinate. This is a typical phenomenon of mutualism reversal. The phenomenon exhibits the co-evolutionary diversification under selection pressures.

The taxonomic identities of Pholidota wenshanica and P. subcalceata (Orchidaceae, Coelogyninae).

Project description:P. wenshanica S.C.Chen & Z.H.Tsi and P. subcalceata Gagnep. have long been recognized as synonyms of P. leveilleana Schltr. In the present study, detailed morphological comparisons suggest that specimens referred to as P. wenshanica and P. subcalceata differ significantly in both vegetative and floral characters from those of P. leveilleana. Here we resurrect P. wenshanica and P. subcalceata as independent species. Key diagnostic characters essential for delineating identities of these species are presented.
