Oestrus ovis external ophtalmomyiasis: a case report in Burgundy France.

ABSTRACT:

Background

External ophtalmomyiasis (EOM) is a zoonosis related to the presence of Oestrus ovis larvae at the ocular level in small ruminants (i.e. ovine, caprine). In humans, EOM is a rare cosmopolitan disorder, mostly described in warm and dry rural areas in patients living close to livestock areas. In metropolitan France (excluding Corsica), EOM is an exceptional disease with less than 25 cases recorded since 1917.

Case presentation

We report a case of EOM in a 19-years old man in the last week of September 2016 in Burgundy.

Conclusion

The diagnosis of an EOM in Burgundy, a French region described as cold and humid, is surprising and could be due to a more marked climatic warming during the vegetative season in Burgundy resulting in the implantation of Diptera of the genus Oestrus sp. in this region.

In vitro larvicidal activity of ivermectin and povidone-iodine against Oestrus ovis.

Project description:PurposeTo assess the in vitro larvicidal activity of ivermectin and povidone-iodine (PVP-I) against Oestrus ovis, the most frequent cause of external ophthalmomyiasis.MethodsL1 O. ovis larvae were collected from the nasal boots of sheep slaughtered in local abattoirs and transferred onto Petri dishes containing mucosal tissue (25 larvae/dish). The larvicidal activity of the following formulations was tested: 1% ivermectin suspension in balanced sterile saline solution (BSSS), 1% ivermectin solution in propylene glycol, propylene glycol, 0.6% PVP-I in hyaluronic acid vehicle (IODIM®), and combination of ivermectin 1% solution and 0.6% PVP-I. One mL of each formulation was added to different Petri dishes containing the larvae. The time needed to kill the larvae was recorded.Results893 larvae were tested. The median time needed to kill the larvae was 46, 44, 11, 6, and 10 minutes for Iodim®, ivermectin 1% suspension, propylene glycol, ivermectin 1% solution, and a combination of ivermectin 1% solution with 0.6% PVP-I, respectively. Kaplan-Meyer analysis disclosed that the survival curves were significantly lower in samples treated with ivermectin 1% solution, ivermectin 1% solution + 0.6% PVP-I, and propylene glycol than in samples receiving other treatments or BSSS.ConclusionIn this in vitro study, ivermectin 1% solution in propylene glycol, ivermectin 1% solution + 0.6% PVP-I, and propylene glycol alone showed a good, relatively rapid larvicidal activity against O. ovis larvae. Further experimental and clinical studies are necessary to establish whether, or not, these formulations may be considered as potential candidates for the topical treatment for external ophthalmomyiasis caused by O. ovis.

Project description:Larvae of the sheep bot fly, Oestrus ovis (Linnaeus, 1758), cause cavitary myiasis in domestic and wild hosts, including man. The complete circular O. ovis mitogenome was assembled, which is 16,584 bp in length and encodes 13 protein-coding genes, 22 tRNA genes, and two rRNA genes. The phylogenetic tree of O. ovis and 13 related Oestridae species, with Sarcophaga tuberosa as outgroup, was built.

Mycobacterium malmoense pulmonary infection in France: a case report.

Project description:Mycobacterium malmoense infections have frequently been reported in northern Europe since the late 1970s. Factors accounting for this geographically localized epidemiology remain poorly understood.We report the case of a 54-year old man concomitantly diagnosed with non-small cell lung carcinoma and M. malmoense pulmonary infection. We present detailed clinical, microbiological and radiological elements strongly arguing for M. malmoense true pathogenicity. Since M. malmoense infection has rarely been reported in France, we also provide elements of the epidemiological investigation and a literature review of potential acquisition and transmission pathways of M. malmoense. We detail therapeutic interventions and subsequent favorable evolution.Mycobacterium malmoense is a recognized respiratory pathogen for which routes of infection need to be better investigated.

Local Emergence of a del HV69-70 SARS-CoV-2 Variant in Burgundy, France.

Project description:In the autumn of 2020, a short-lived epidemic of a spike del69-70 deletion variant of SARS-CoV-2 was identified, with most cases (n = 95) found in Montceau-les-Mines, France. This spike gene target failure (SGTF) variant spread quickly in nursing homes. The Alpha variant, which also harbors this deletion, appeared in Burgundy in January 2021 after the disappearance of the Montceau-les-Mines del69-70 variant. Our findings illustrate the risk of the fast spread of geographically isolated variants and reinforce the need for the continuous tracking of outbreaks. In some cases, these studies may reveal emerging variants that affect public health or vaccine development.

Hidradenoma papilliferum of the external auditory canal. Case report.

Project description:IntroductionHidradenoma papilliferum, also known as papillary hidradenoma, is a rare tumor of the sudoral glands, that occurs almost exclusively in women, on the vulvar and perineal region. Non-genital papillary hydradenoma is an even more rare occurrence, though some cases have been described in literature.This is a report of a 56 years old patient who presented with unilateral hearing loss secondary to a mass of the external auditory canal (EAC). A biopsy allowed us to make the diagnosis of a papillary hidradenoma of the EAC. The treatment was based on surgery; the tumor was removed while respecting the adjacent structures. Follow-up of the patient shows no actual recurrence.ConclusionEctopic Hidradenoma papilliferum located in the EAC is a rare occurrence, and should be considered as a possible diagnosis when investigating a mass of the EAC.

Multiple chromoanasynthesis in a rare case of sporadic renal leiomyosarcoma: case report

Project description:Renal leiomyosarcomas (LMS) are extremely rare neoplasms with aggressive behaviour and poor survival prognosis. The most frequent somatic events in leiomyosarcomas are mutations in TP53, RB1, ATRX and PTEN genes, chromosomal instability and chromoanagenesis. By using chromosomal microarray analysis we identified monosomy of chromosomes 3 and 11, gain of Xp (ATRX) arm and three chromoanasynthesis regions (6q21-q27, 7p22.3-p12.1 and 12q13.11-q21.2), with MDM2 and CDK4 oncogenes copy number gains, whereas no CNVs or tumor specific SNVs in TP53, RB1 and PTEN genes were observed.
