Organic core-shell-shaped micro/nanoparticles from twisted macrocycles in Schiff base reaction.

ABSTRACT: Functional self-assemblies derived from noncovalent interactions such as lipid vesicles and DNA chiral double helices are a typical feature of natural life activity. Because of this phenomenon, a self-assembly approach for various functional organic particles is a desirable objective in supramolecular chemistry. Here, we report the discovery of enantiomeric conformers from a twisted macrocyclic host (MH), which was obtained from an achiral precursor by Schiff base reaction. Further studies suggest that a series of unexpected and stable core-shell-based organic micro/nanospheres can be directly precipitated from a simple reaction solution with high yield. A single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis of MH revealed that the unusual C-H···π interaction triggered self-assembly of the enantiomeric forms in the solid state plays an important role in the formation of the core-shell-shaped organic particles.

Gas-phase rearrangement reaction of Schiff-base-modified peptide ions.

Project description:RationaleSchiff base modification of peptides has been shown to facilitate their primary structural characterization via tandem mass spectrometry. However, we have discovered a novel rearrangement reaction via ion trap collisional activation involving the imine of the Schiff base and one of several functional groups, particularly the side chains of the basic residues lysine, arginine, and histidine, in the peptide.MethodsGas-phase ion/ion reactions involving an aldehyde-containing reagent were used to generate Schiff-base-modified model peptides in a hybrid triple quadrupole/linear ion trap tandem mass spectrometer. Subsequent ion trap collisional activation was used to study the rearrangement reaction.ResultsSchiff-base-modified peptide ions were found to undergo a rearrangement reaction that was observed to be either a major or minor contributor to the product ion spectrum, depending upon a variety of factors that include, for example, ion polarity, identity of the nucleophile in the peptide (e.g., side chains of lysine, histidine, and arginine), and the position of the nucleophile relative to the imine.ConclusionsRelatively low-energy rearrangement reactions can occur in Schiff-base-modified peptide ions that involve the imine of the Schiff base and a nucleophile present in the polypeptide. While this rearrangement process does not appear to compromise the structural information that can be generated via collisional activation of Schiff-base-modified peptide ions, it can siphon away signal from the structurally diagnostic processes in some instances.

Core-Shell Crystals of Porous Organic Cages.

Project description:The first examples of core-shell porous molecular crystals are described. The physical properties of the core-shell crystals, such as surface hydrophobicity, CO2 ?/CH4 selectivity, are controlled by the chemical composition of the shell. This shows that porous core-shell molecular crystals can exhibit synergistic properties that out-perform materials built from the individual, constituent molecules.

Al13@Pt42 core-shell cluster for oxygen reduction reaction.

Project description:To increase Pt utilization for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in fuel cells, reducing particle sizes of Pt is a valid way. However, poisoning or surface oxidation limits the smallest size of Pt particles at 2.6 nm with a low utility of 20%. Here, using density functional theory calculations, we develop a core-shell Al13@Pt42 cluster as a catalyst for ORR. Benefit from alloying with Al in this cluster, the covalent Pt-Al bonding effectively activates the Pt atoms at the edge sites, enabling its high utility up to 70%. Valuably, the adsorption energy of O is located at the optimal range with 0.0-0.4 eV weaker than Pt(111), while OH-poisoning does not observed. Moreover, ORR comes from O2 dissociation mechanism where the rate-limiting step is located at OH formation from O and H with a barrier of 0.59 eV, comparable with 0.50 eV of OH formation from O and H2O on Pt(111).

Complex assembly from planar and twisted ?-conjugated molecules towards alloy helices and core-shell structures.

Project description:Integrating together two dissimilar ?-conjugated molecules into controlled complex topological configurations remains a largely unsolved problem owing to the diversity of organic species and their respective different assembly features. Here, we find that two structurally similar organic semiconductors, 9,10-bis(phenylethynyl)anthracene (BA) and 5,12-bis(phenylethynyl)naphthacene (BN), co-assemble into two-component helices by control of the growth kinetics as well as the molar ratio of BA/BN. The helical superstructures made of planar and twisted bis(phenylethynyl) derivatives can be regarded as (BA)x(BN)1-x alloys, which are formed due to compatible structural relationship between BA and BN. Moreover, epitaxial growth of (BA)x(BN)1-x alloy layer on the surface of BA tube to form BA@(BA)x(BN)1-x core-shell structure is also achieved via a solute exchange process. The precise control over composition and morphology towards organic alloy helices and core-shell microstructures opens a door for understanding the complex co-assembly features of two or more different material partners with similar structures.

Core-shell zeolite@aqueous miscible organic-layered double hydroxides.

Project description:We report a general method for the synthesis of core-shell hybrid materials containing a microporous zeolite core with an aqueous miscible organic-layered double hydroxide (AMO-LDH) shell using a simple in situ coprecipitation method. For example, zeolite-HY@AMO-Mg2Al-CO3-LDH contains a 150 nm hierarchical AMO-Mg2Al-CO3-LDH surface coating on zeolite-HY. It exhibits a similar BET surface area (698 m2 g-1) as the parent zeolite-HY but this surface area has been re-allocated between microspores and mesopores. We believe that surface aluminium sites act as nucleation sites for the formation of the LDH coating and so robustly links it into the zeolite lattice. We expect that this new hybrid structure with micropores dominating in the core and mesopores populating the shell will provide a desirable new hybrid structure type for adsorption or catalysis.

Schiff base capped gold nanoparticles for transition metal cation sensing in organic media.

Project description:We report a fast and ultrasensitive colorimetric method for the detection of transition metal ions (Fe3+, Cu2+, Ni2+) in a mixture of toluene-acetonitrile using Schiff base functionalized gold nanoparticles. We achieved limits of detection for the three metal ions at least two orders of magnitude lower than the EU recommended limits. Finally, our methodology was assessed for the determination of nickel in the organic waste of a relevant industrial reaction.

Core-Shell Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA) Base Electrospinning Microfibers for Drug Delivery.

Project description:In this study, electrospun membranes were developed for controlled drug release applications. Both uniaxial Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and coaxial fibers with a PVA core and a poly (L-lactic acid) (PLLA) and polycaprolactone (PCL) coating were produced with different coating structures. The best conditions for the manufacture of the fibers were also studied and their morphology was analyzed as a function of the electrospinning parameters. Special attention was paid to the fiber surface morphology of the coaxial fibers, obtaining both porous and non-porous coatings. Bovine serum albumin (BSA) was used as the model protein for the drug release studies and, as expected, the uncoated fibers were determined to have the fastest release kinetics. Different release rates were obtained for the coated fibers, which makes this drug release system suitable for different applications according to the release time required.

Electron Tomography of Pencil-Shaped GaN/(In,Ga)N Core-Shell Nanowires.

Project description:The three-dimensional structure of GaN/(In,Ga)N core-shell nanowires with multi-faceted pencil-shaped apex is analyzed by electron tomography using high-angle annular dark-field mode in a scanning transmission electron microscope. Selective area growth on GaN-on-sapphire templates using a patterned mask is performed by molecular beam epitaxy to obtain ordered arrays of uniform nanowires. Our results of the tomographic reconstruction allow the detailed determination of the complex morphology of the inner (In,Ga)N multi-faceted shell structure and its deviation from the perfect hexagonal symmetry. The tomogram unambiguously identifies a dot-in-a-wire configuration at the nanowire apex including the exact shape and size, as well as the spatial distribution of its chemical composition.

Fe3O4@void@C-Schiff-base/Pd yolk-shell nanostructures as an effective and reusable nanocatalyst for Suzuki coupling reaction.

Project description:This article describes the synthesis of a novel Yolk-Shell structured Magnetic Yolk-Shell Nanomaterials Modified by Functionalized Carbon Shell with Schiff/Palladium Bases (Fe3O4@void@C-Schiff-base/Pd). The designed Fe3O4@void@C-Schiff-base/Pd catalyst was characterized using several techniques such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and Inductively coupled plasma (ICP). The Fe3O4@void@C-Schiff-base/Pd was used as powerful catalyst for preparation Suzuki reaction in short reaction times and high yield in H2O at 60 °C and presence of potassium carbonate base. This nanocatalyst was magnetically recovered and reused several times with keeping its efficiency.

Star-Shaped Fe3-xO4-Au Core-Shell Nanoparticles: From Synthesis to SERS Application.

Project description:In this work, the preparation of magneto-plasmonic granular nanostructures and their evaluation as efficient substrates for magnetically assisted surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) sensing are discussed. These nanostructures consist of star-shaped gold Au shell grown on iron oxide Fe3-xO4 multicores. They were prepared by seed-mediated growth of anisotropic, in shape gold nanosatellites attached to the surface of polyol-made iron oxide polycrystals. In practice, the 180 nm-sized spherical iron oxide particles were functionalized by (3-aminopropyl) triethoxysilane (APTES) to become positively charged and to interact, in solution, with negatively charged 2 nm-sized Au single crystals, leading to nanohybrids. These hybrids acted subsequently as nucleation platforms for the growth of a branched gold shell, when they were contacted to a fresh HAuCl4 gold salt aqueous solution, in the presence of hydroquinone, a reducing agent, for an optimized nominal weight ratio between both the starting hybrids and the gold salt. As expected, the resulting nanocomposites exhibit a high saturation magnetization at room temperature and a rough enough plasmonic surface, making them easily attracted by a lab. magnet, while exhibiting a great number of SERS hot spots. Preliminary SERS detection assays were successfully performed on diluted aqueous thiram solution (10-8 M), using these engineered substrates, highlighting their capability to be used as chemical trace sensors.
