Project description:Zincian georgeite, an amorphous copper-zinc hydroxycarbonate, has been prepared by co-precipitation using acetate salts and ammonium carbonate. Incorporation of zinc into the georgeite phase and mild ageing conditions inhibits crystallisation into zincian malachite or aurichalcite. This zincian georgeite precursor was used to prepare a Cu/ZnO catalyst, which exhibits a superior performance to a zincian malachite derived catalyst for methanol synthesis and the low temperature water-gas shift (LTS) reaction. Furthermore, the enhanced LTS activity and stability in comparison to that of a commercial Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 catalyst, indicates that the addition of alumina as a stabiliser may not be required for the zincian georgeite derived Cu/ZnO catalyst. The enhanced performance is partly attributed to the exclusion of alkali metals from the synthesis procedure, which are known to act as catalyst poisons. The effect of residual sodium on the microstructural properties of the catalyst precursor was investigated further from preparations using sodium carbonate.

Project description:The synergistic interaction among different components in complex catalysts is one of the crucial factors in determining catalytic performance. Here we report the interactions among the three components in controlling the catalytic performance of Cu-ZnO-ZrO2 (CZZ) catalyst for CO2 hydrogenation to methanol. The in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) measurements under the activity test pressure (3 MPa) reveal that the CO2 hydrogenation to methanol on the CZZ catalysts follows the formate pathway. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations agree with the in situ DRIFTS measurements, showing that the ZnO-ZrO2 interfaces are the active sites for CO2 adsorption and conversion, while the presence of metallic Cu is also necessary to facilitate H2 dissociation and to provide hydrogen resource. The combined experiment and DFT results reveal that tuning the interaction between ZnO and ZrO2 can be considered as another important factor for designing high performance catalysts for methanol generation from CO2.

Project description:The heterogeneously catalysed reaction of hydrogen with carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide (syngas) to methanol is nearly 100 years old, and the standard methanol catalyst Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 has been applied for more than 50 years. Still, the nature of the Zn species on the metallic Cu0 particles (interface sites) is heavily debated. Here, we show that these Zn species are not metallic, but have a positively charged nature under industrial methanol synthesis conditions. Our kinetic results are based on a self-built high-pressure pulse unit, which allows us to inject selective reversible poisons into the syngas feed passing through a fixed-bed reactor containing an industrial Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 catalyst under high-pressure conditions. This method allows us to perform surface-sensitive operando investigations as a function of the reaction conditions, demonstrating that the rate of methanol formation is only decreased in CO2-containing syngas mixtures when pulsing NH3 or methylamines as basic probe molecules.

Project description:Noble metals such as Au, Ag, and Cu supported over semiconducting ZnO are well-known heterogeneous oxidation catalysts. All of them have been utilized for the oxidation of diesel soot with varied success. However, Au-supported ZnO is seen to be superior among them. Here, we present a comparative study of all these three catalysts for diesel soot oxidation to explain why Au/ZnO is the best among them, demonstrating the contribution of electronic states of metals in composite catalysts. The electronic states of Cu, Ag, and Au determined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy on 1 wt % Cu/ZnO, 1 wt % Ag/ZnO, and 1 wt % Au/ZnO catalysts were correlated with their diesel soot oxidation activities. Although all three catalysts present reasonable diesel soot oxidation activities at relatively low temperature, 1% Cu/ZnO and 1% Ag/ZnO oxidize only about 60% of the deposited diesel soot around 250 °C and 1% Au/ZnO oxidizes 100% of the deposited diesel soot, at a temperature as low as 230 °C. The activity of the catalysts is attributed to the formation of stable M0-Mδ+ bifunctional catalytic sites at the metal-ZnO interface, which enhances the contact efficiency of solid diesel soot on Mδ+ and generates the superoxide species on M0 moieties. The stability of the bifunctional M0-Mδ+ sites is controlled by the electronic interactions between the metal (M) and n-type semiconductor ZnO at their interface. Very high activity of 1% Au/ZnO is attributed to the presence of Au3+ at the catalyst surface, which generates a stronger Coulombic force with diesel soot electrons. We demonstrate a direct relation between the diesel soot oxidation activity of these three metals and their electronic states at the catalyst surface.

Project description:For decades it has been debated whether the conversion of synthesis gas to methanol over copper catalysts is sensitive or insensitive to the structure of the copper surface. Here we have systematically investigated the effect of the copper particle size in the range where changes in surface structure occur, that is, below 10?nm, for catalysts with and without zinc promotor at industrially relevant conditions for methanol synthesis. Regardless of the presence or absence of a zinc promotor in the form of zinc oxide or zinc silicate, the surface-specific activity decreases significantly for copper particles smaller than 8?nm, thus revealing structure sensitivity. In view of recent theoretical studies we propose that the methanol synthesis reaction takes place at copper surface sites with a unique configuration of atoms such as step-edge sites, which smaller particles cannot accommodate.

Project description:We herein describe a straight forward procedure to increase the performance of platinum-on-alumina catalysts in methanol steam reforming by applying an alkali hydroxide coating according to the "solid catalyst with ionic liquid layer" (SCILL) approach. We demonstrate by diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) and temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) studies that potassium doping plays an important role in the catalyst activation. Moreover, the hygroscopic nature and the basicity of the salt modification contribute to the considerable enhancement in catalytic performance. During reaction, a partly liquid film of alkali hydroxides/carbonates forms on the catalyst/alumina surface, thus significantly enhancing the availability of water at the catalytically active sites. Too high catalyst pore fillings with salt introduce a considerable mass transfer barrier into the system as indicated by kinetic studies. Thus, the optimum interplay between beneficial catalyst modification and detrimental mass transfer effects had to be identified and was found on the applied platinum-on-alumina catalyst at KOH loadings around 7.5?mass%.

Project description:Cu-ZnO-Al2O3 catalysts are used as the industrial catalysts for water gas shift (WGS) and CO hydrogenation to methanol reactions. Herein, via a comprehensive experimental and theoretical calculation study of a series of ZnO/Cu nanocrystals inverse catalysts with well-defined Cu structures, we report that the ZnO-Cu catalysts undergo Cu structure-dependent and reaction-sensitive in situ restructuring during WGS and CO hydrogenation reactions under typical reaction conditions, forming the active sites of CuCu(100)-hydroxylated ZnO ensemble and CuCu(611)Zn alloy, respectively. These results provide insights into the active sites of Cu-ZnO catalysts for the WGS and CO hydrogenation reactions and reveal the Cu structural effects, and offer the feasible guideline for optimizing the structures of Cu-ZnO-Al2O3 catalysts.

Project description:The development of efficient catalysts is one of the main challenges in CO2 conversion to valuable chemicals and fuels. Herein, inspired by the knowledge of the thermocatalytic (TC) processes, Cu/ZnO and bare Cu catalysts enriched with Cu+1 were studied to convert CO2 via the electrocatalytic (EC) pathway. Integrating Cu with ZnO (a CO-generation catalyst) is a strategy explored in the EC CO2 reduction to reduce the kinetic barrier and enhance C-C coupling to obtain C2+ chemicals and energy carriers. Herein, ethanol was produced with the Cu/ZnO catalyst, reaching a productivity of about 5.27 mmol·gcat-1·h-1 in a liquid-phase configuration at ambient conditions. In contrast, bare copper preferentially produced C1 products like formate and methanol. During CO2 hydrogenation, a methanol selectivity close to 100% was achieved with the Cu/ZnO catalysts at 200 °C, a value that decreased at higher temperatures (i.e., 23% at 300 °C) because of thermodynamic limitations. The methanol productivity increased to approximately 1.4 mmol·gcat-1·h-1 at 300 °C. Ex situ characterizations after testing confirmed the potential of adding ZnO in Cu-based materials to stabilize the Cu1+/Cu0 interface at the electrocatalyst surface because of Zn and O enrichment by an amorphous zinc oxide matrix; while in the TC process, Cu0 and crystalline ZnO prevailed under CO2 hydrogenation conditions. It is envisioned that the lower *CO binding energy at the Cu0 catalyst surface in the TC process than in the Cu1+ present in the EC one leads to preferential CO and methanol production in the TC system. Instead, our EC results revealed that an optimum local CO production at the ZnO surface in tandem with a high amount of superficial Cu1+ + Cu0 species induces ethanol formation by ensuring an appropriate local amount of *CO intermediates and their further dimerization to generate C2+ products. Optimizing the ZnO loading on Cu is proposed to tune the catalyst surface properties and the formation of more reduced CO2 conversion products.

Project description:Strongly Lewis acidic cationic aluminium complexes, stabilized by β-diketiminate (BDI) ligands and free of Lewis bases, have been prepared as their B(C6 F5 )4 - salts and were investigated for catalytic activity in imine hydrogenation. The backbone (R1) and N (R2) substituents on the R1,R2 BDI ligand (R1,R2 BDI=HC[C(R1)N(R2)]2 ) influence sterics and Lewis acidity. Ligand bulk increases along the row Me,DIPP BDI<Me,DIPeP BDI≈tBu,DIPP BDI<tBu,DIPeP BDI; DIPP=2,6-C(H)Me2 -phenyl, DIPeP=2,6-C(H)Et2 -phenyl. The Gutmann-Beckett test showed acceptor numbers of: (tBu,DIPP BDI)AlMe+ 85.6, (tBu,DIPeP BDI)AlMe+ 85.9, (Me,DIPP BDI)AlMe+ 89.7, (Me,DIPeP BDI)AlMe+ 90.8, (Me,DIPP BDI)AlH+ 95.3. Steric and electronic factors need to be balanced for catalytic activity in imine hydrogenation. Open, highly Lewis acidic, cations strongly coordinate imine rendering it inactive as a Frustrated Lewis Pair (FLP). The bulkiest cations do not coordinate imine but its combination is also not an active catalyst. The cation (tBu,DIPP BDI)AlMe+ shows the best catalytic activity for various imines and is also an active catalyst for the Tishchenko reaction of benzaldehyde to benzylbenzoate. DFT calculations on the mechanism of imine hydrogenation catalysed by cationic Al complexes reveal two interconnected catalytic cycles operating in concert. Hydrogen is activated either by FLP reactivity of an Al⋅⋅⋅imine couple or, after formation of significant quantities of amine, by reaction with an Al⋅⋅⋅amine couple. The latter autocatalytic Al⋅⋅⋅amine cycle is energetically favoured.
