2-Nitrobenzyl Isocyanide as a Universal Convertible Isocyanide.

ABSTRACT: 2-Nitrobenzyl isocyanide is reported as a universal convertible isocyanide with extensive applicability in both Ugi four-component reaction (Ugi-4CR) and Ugi-tetrazole reaction. The cleavage of this isocyanide from 17 examples in both acidic and basic conditions is presented. Additionally, this isocyanide has various handling and synthetic advantages, as it is easy to prepare, odorless, stable, and easy to handle as a solid.

The variation in carboxylic acid substrates allows for the generation of new chiral racemic quaternary carbon centers under basic conditions providing molecular diversity and a small library of spirocyclic oxindoles.

A wavelength-convertible quantum memory: Controlled echo.

Project description:Quantum coherence control is reinvestigated for a new physical insight in quantum nonlinear optics and applied for a wavelength-convertible quantum memory in a solid ensemble whose spin states are inhomogeneously broadened. Unlike typical atomic media whose spin decays are homogeneous, a spin inhomogeneously broadened solid ensemble requires a counter-intuitive quantum coherence control to avoid spontaneous emission-caused quantum noises. Such a quantum coherence control in a solid ensemble satisfying both near perfect retrieval efficiency and ultralong photon storage offers a solid framework to quantum repeaters, scalable qubit generations, quantum cryptography, and highly sensitive magnetometry. Here, the basic physics of the counter-intuitive quantum coherence control is presented not only for a fundamental understanding of collective ensemble phase control but also for a coherence conversion mechanism between optical and spin states involving Raman rephasing.

Magnesium Cyanide or Isocyanide?

Project description:Preference for the binding mode of the CN- ligand to Mg (Mg-CN vs. Mg-NC) is investigated. A monomeric Mg complex with a terminal CN ligand was prepared using the dipyrromethene ligand Mes DPM which successfully blocks dimerization. While reaction of (Mes DPM)MgN(SiMe3 )2 with Me3 SiCN gave the coordination complex (Mes DPM)MgN(SiMe3 )2 ⋅NCSiMe3 , reaction with (Mes DPM)Mg(nBu) led to (Mes DPM)MgNC⋅(THF)2 . A Mg-NC/Mg-CN ratio of ≈95:5 was established by crystal-structure determination and DFT calculations. IR studies show absorbances for CN stretching at 2085 cm-1 (Mg-NC) and 2162 cm-1 (Mg-CN) as confirmed by 13 C labeling. In solution and in the solid state, the CN ligand rotates within the pocket. The calculated isomerization barrier is only 12.0 kcal mol-1 and the 13 C NMR signal for CN decoalesces at -85 °C (Mg-NC: 175.9 ppm, Mg-CN: 144.3 ppm). Experiment and theory both indicate that Mg complexes with the CN- ligand should not be named cyanides but are more properly defined as isocyanides.

Project description:In the title compound, C(13)H(12)N(3)O(3) (+)·Br(-), the benzene and pyridinium rings form a dihedral angle of 82.0 (1)°. In the crystal, N-H⋯Br and N-H⋯O hydrogen bonds link the components into chains along [001]. In addition, weak C-H⋯O and C-H⋯Br hydrogen bonds are observed.

Information flow among stocks, bonds, and convertible bonds.

Project description:This study examines the information flow between convertible bonds (CBs) and other investment assets, such as stocks and bonds. In particular, we employ transfer entropy (TE) as a proxy for the causal effect between the two assets considering that one of the most widely used methods, Granger causality, requires strict assumptions. When adopting TE, we find that asymmetric information flow arising between assets depends on macroeconomic phases. The stock and bond markets affected the CB market prior to and during the global financial crisis, respectively. In the post-crisis period, we find no meaningful information exchange between CBs and other investment assets concerning their return series. However, we observe a significant cause-effect relationship between CBs and stocks in the rise-fall patterns of their price series. The findings suggest that the appearance of one-directional information flow depends on macroeconomic conditions and the level of data, for example, return series or price fluctuations. Accordingly, investors could exploit this pattern predictability in their portfolio management. In addition, policymakers must closely monitor the information flow among the three markets. When any two markets exchange information in a state of strong market integration, unbalanced regulation between them could lead to market distortions and regulatory arbitrage.

The binding of ethyl isocyanide to ferroperoxidase.

Project description:The equilibrium and kinetics of ethyl isocyanide binding to ferroperoxidase were studied. At pH9.1 the results of both studies are consistent with a single-process model with an affinity constant of 95m(-1) and combination and dissociation constants of 2.2x10(3)m(-1).s(-1) and 23s(-1) respectively. Ethyl isocyanide is not bound significantly at pH values lower than 6.0, and in this behaviour and the pH-dependence of the affinity constant, similarities exist between isocyanide and cyanide binding. The enthalpy of the process measured by equilibrium methods is -59kJ/mol (-14kcal/mol). At pH values below 9, the ethyl isocyanide adduct changes in a slow time-dependent manner, giving rise to a new species. These changes are reversible on increasing the pH. The results are discussed in relation to other known information about ligand binding to ferroperoxidase and to myoglobin.

The central Ni atom of each independent mol-ecule has a nearly perfect tetra-hedral coordination environment, comprising one carbon monoxide and three isocyanide ligands. The title compound is the first structurally characterized Ni(0) compound with a mixed CO/RNC coordination.

A New Method for the Cleavage of Nitrobenzyl Amides and Ethers.

Project description:A mild and efficient o- and p-nitrobenzyl cleavage protocol was developed. o- and p-Nitrobenzyl groups were easily removed from a variety of substrates using 20% aqueous NaOH in methanol at 75 °C, presumably via oxidation at the benzylic position by oxygen dissolved in the solution. These easily introducible and removable nitrobenzyl groups can serve as valuable protecting groups for the synthesis of multifunctional, complex molecules.
