Hydro/Deutero Deamination of Arylazo Sulfones under Metal- and (Photo)Catalyst-Free Conditions.

ABSTRACT: Hydrodeaminated and monodeuterated aromatics were obtained via a visible-light driven reaction of arylazo sulfones. Deuteration occurs efficiently in deuterated media such as isopropanol-d⁸ or in THF-d⁸/water mixtures and exhibits a high tolerance to the nature and the position of the aromatic substituents.

Sulfonylimino Group Transfer Reaction Using Imino-λ³-iodanes with I₂ as Catalyst Under Metal-free Conditions.

Project description:A new practical procedure of imination for sulfide has been developed. The treatment of (N-tosylimino)-phenyl-λ³-iodane, PhINTs, with various sulfides in the presence of a catalytic amount of I₂ under metal-free conditions affords the corresponding N-tosylsulfilimine compounds with moderate to good yields. This facile transfer procedure of the sulfonylimino group can also be applied to triphenylphosphine to produce the respective iminotriphenylphosphoranes in high yields. According to the reaction mechanism studies, the process of imination from (N-tosylimino)-phenyl-λ³-iodane to sulfide under the conditions may involve radical steps within the reaction mechanism.

Catalyst-Free Approach for Hydroboration of Carboxylic Acids under Mild Conditions.

Project description:Herein, we present a facile method for deoxygenative hydroboration of a broad range of carboxylic acids under very mild conditions. The most striking feature of this attractive hydroboration is that this elusive and challenging transformation was realized without catalyst and solvent. The investigation of solvent effect showed that tetrahydrofuran was also suitable for this kind of reaction. Moreover, a successful gram-scale trial may provide a very promising toolkit for carboxylic acid reduction at a large scale.

Metal-free atom transfer radical polymerization with ppm catalyst loading under sunlight.

Project description:Organocatalytic atom transfer radical polymerization (O-ATRP) is recently emerging as an appealing method for the synthesis of metal-free polymer materials with well-defined microstructures and architectures. However, the development of highly effective catalysts that can be employed at a practical low loading are still a challenging task. Herein, we introduce a catalyst design logic based on heteroatom-doping of polycyclic arenes, which leads to the discovery of oxygen-doped anthanthrene (ODA) as highly effective organic photoredox catalysts for O-ATRP. In comparison with known organocatalysts, ODAs feature strong visible-light absorption together with high molar extinction coefficient (ε455nm up to 23,950 M-1 cm-1), which allow for the establishment of a controlled polymerization under sunlight at low ppm levels of catalyst loading.

Metal-free selective mono-halodecarboxylation of heteroarenes under mild conditions.

Project description:The halodecarboxylation of heteroarene carboxylic acids by treatment with N-bromosuccinimide or N-chlorosuccinimide was performed. This procedure provides a convenient route to synthetically useful mono-halogenated heteroarene intermediates such as halo-indoles, -aza-indoles, -indazoles and -aza-indazoles. The mild conditions employed and simple protocol provides an advantage over traditional halodecarboxylation procedures that require expensive and toxic metal catalysts, basic conditions, time-consuming intermediate isolation and elevated reaction temperatures.

Visible Light Promoted, Catalyst-Free Radical Carbohydroxylation and Carboetherification under Mild Biomimetic Conditions.

Project description:Metal and catalyst-free carbohydroxylations and carboetherifications at room temperature have been achieved by a combination of beneficial factors including high aryl diazonium concentration and visible light irradiation. The acceleration of the reaction by visible light irradiation is particularly remarkable against the background that neither the aryldiazonium salt nor the alkene show absorptions in the respective range of wavelength. These observations point to weak charge transfer interactions between diazonium salt and alkene, which are nevertheless able to considerably influence the reaction course. As highly promising perspective, many more aryldiazonium-based radical arylations might benefit from simple light irradiation without requiring a photocatalyst or particular additive.

Catalyst-free arylation of sulfonamides via visible light-mediated deamination.

Project description:A novel arylation of sulfonamides with boronic acids to afford numerous diaryl sulfones via a visible light-mediated N-S bond cleavage other than the typical transition-metal-catalyzed C(O)-N bond activation is described. This methodology, which represents the first catalyst-free protocol for the sulfonylation of boronic acids, is characterized by its simple reaction conditions, good functional group tolerance and high efficiency. Several successful examples for the late-stage functionalization of diverse sulfonamides indicate the high potential utility of this method in pharmaceutical science and organic synthesis.

Dynamics of Photo-Induced Surface Oxygen Vacancies in Metal-Oxide Semiconductors Studied Under Ambient Conditions.

Project description:Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is a powerful analytical technique commonly used in the detection of traces of organic molecules. The mechanism of SERS is of a dual nature, with Raman scattering enhancements due to a combination of electromagnetic (EM) and chemical contributions. In conventional SERS, the EM component is largely responsible for the enhancement, with the chemical contribution playing a less significant role. An alternative technique, called photo-induced enhanced Raman spectroscopy (PIERS) has been recently developed, using a photo-activated semiconductor substrate to give additional chemical enhancement of Raman bands over traditional SERS. This enhancement is assigned to surface oxygen vacancies (V o) formed upon pre-irradiation of the substrate. In this work, the exceptional chemical contribution in PIERS allows for the evaluation of atomic V o dynamics in metal oxide surfaces. This technique is applied to study the formation and healing rates of surface-active V o in archetypical metal-oxide semiconductors, namely, TiO2, WO3, and ZnO. Contrary to conventional analytical tools, PIERS provides intuitive and valuable information about surface stability of atomic defects at ambient pressure and under operando conditions, which has important implications in a wide range of applications including catalysis and energy storage materials.

Light-Driven Metal-Free Direct Deoxygenation of Alcohols under Mild Conditions.

Project description:Hydroxyl is widely found in organic molecules as functional group and its deprivation plays an inevitable role in organic synthesis. However, the direct cleavage of Csp3-O bond in alcohols with high selectivity and efficiency, especially without the assistance of metal catalyst, has been a formidable challenge because of its strong bond dissociation energy and unfavorable thermodynamics. Herein, an efficient metal-free strategy that enables direct deoxygenation of alcohols has been developed for the first time, with hydrazine as the reductant induced by light. This protocol features mild reaction conditions, excellent functional group tolerance, and abundant and easily available starting materials, rendering selective deoxygenation of a variety of 1° and 2° alcohols, vicinal diols, and β-1 and even β-O-4 models of natural wood lignin. This strategy is also highlighted by its "traceless" and non-toxic by-products N2 and H2, as readily escapable gases. Mechanistic studies demonstrated dimethyl sulfide being a key intermediate in this transformation.
