Enhancing Metal Separations by Liquid-Liquid Extraction Using Polar Solvents.

ABSTRACT: The less polar phase of liquid-liquid extraction systems has been studied extensively for improving metal separations; however, the role of the more polar phase has been overlooked for far too long. Herein, we investigate the extraction of metals from a variety of polar solvents and demonstrate that, the influence of polar solvents on metal extraction is so significant that extraction of many metals can be largely tuned, and the metal separations can be significantly enhanced by selecting suitable polar solvents. Furthermore, a mechanism on how the polar solvents affect metal extraction is proposed based on comprehensive characterizations. The method of using suitable polar solvents in liquid-liquid extraction paves a new and versatile way to enhance metal separations.

Enhancing Metal Separations Using Hydrophilic Ionic Liquids and Analogues as Complexing Agents in the More Polar Phase of Liquid-Liquid Extraction Systems.

Project description:The separation of metals by liquid-liquid extraction largely relies on the affinity of metals to the extractants, which normally reside in the organic (less polar) phase because of their high hydrophobicity. Following a different route, using aminopoly(carboxylic acid)s (e.g., EDTA) as complexing agents in the aqueous (more polar) phase was found to enhance metal separations by selectively complexing metal cations. In this study, we demonstrate that, hydrophilic ionic liquids and analogues in the more polar phase could also selectively complex with metal cations and hence enhance metal separations. As an example, Cyanex 923 (a mixture of trialkyl phosphine oxides) dissolved in p-cymene extracts CoCl2 more efficiently than SmCl3 from a chloride ethylene glycol (EG) solution. However, when tetraethylammonium chloride is added into the EG solution, CoCl2 is selectively held back (only 1.2% extraction at 3.0 M tetraethylammonium chloride), whereas the extraction of SmCl3 is unaffected (89.9% extraction), leading to reversed metal separation with a separation factor of Sm(III)/Co(II) > 700. The same principle is applicable to a range of hydrophilic ionic liquids, which can be used as complexing agents in the more polar phase to enhance the separations of various metal mixtures by liquid-liquid extraction.

Surface-Grafted Poly(ionic liquid) that Lubricates in Both Non-polar and Polar Solvents.

Project description:We show that a surface-grafted polymer brush, 1-n-butyl-3-vinyl imidazolium bromide-based poly(ionic liquids), is able to reduce the interfacial friction by up to 66% and 42% in dodecane and water, respectively. AFM-based force spectroscopy reveals that the polymer brush adopts distinctively different interfacial conformations: swollen in water but collapsed in dodecane. Minimal surface adhesion was observed with both polymer conformations, which can be attributed to steric repulsion as the result of a swollen conformation in water or surface solvation when the hydrophobic fraction of the polymer was exposed to the dodecane. The work brings additional insight on the polymer lubrication mechanism, which expands the possible design of the polymer architecture for interfacial lubrication and modification.

Polar metabolomics in human muscle biopsies using a liquid-liquid extraction and full-scan LC-MS.

Project description:We describe here a user-friendly analysis protocol for semi-targeted polar metabolomics in human muscle biopsies using Zwitterionic Hydrophilic Interaction Liquid Chromatography and high-resolution full-scan mass spectrometry. Previously, this protocol has been used for Caenorhabditis elegans. Here we show that it can be successfully applied to human muscle biopsies with minor adjustments. Summarized instructions for other matrices are also provided. As peak integration in metabolomics can be challenging, we provide expected retention times and extensive peak descriptions to aid this process. Paper spray ionization of polar analytes using non-polar solvents.

Project description:Non-polar solvents like hexane allow ionization of insoluble drugs, peptides, nucleotides and phospholipids as solids from paper. Ambient ionization is achieved simply by application of a high voltage to the wet paper. Transport and ionization mechanisms are discussed, including the possibility of field desorption from dendritic structures formed on the paper.

High-efficient liquid exfoliation of 2D metal-organic framework using deep-eutectic solvents.

Project description:The exfoliation of bulk two-dimensional metal-organic framework (MOF) into few-layered nanosheets has attracted much attention recently. In this work, an environmental-friendly route has been developed for layered-MOF (MAMS-1) delamination using deep eutectic solvent (DES), which is more sustainable and efficient alternative than conventional organic solvents for MOF nanosheet preparation. Under sonication condition, DES as solvents, the highest exfoliation rate of MAMS-1 is up to 70% with two host layers via poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) surfactant-assisted method. The presence of tert-butyl exteriors and the atomically thickness endow the MOF nanosheets stable suspension for at least one month. Due to the 2D structure and excellent stability, MAMS-1 nanosheet (MAMS-1-NS) was chosen as a good candidate to encapsulate Eu3+ cations. The obtained Eu3+@MAMS-1-NS acts as a multi-responsive luminescent sensor through fluorescence quenching, and can specifically recognize Fe3+ (LOD = 0.40 μM, KSV = 1.05 × 105 M-l), Hg2+ (LOD = 0.038 μM, KSV = 5.78 × 106 M-l), Cr2O72- (LOD = 0.33 μM, KSV = 1.55 × 105 M-l) and MnO4- (LOD = 0.088 μM, KSV = 4.49 × 105 M-l). Compared with bulk Eu3+@MAMS-1, the sensitivity of Eu3+@MAMS-1-NS is greatly improved owing to its ultrathin nanosheet morphology and highly accessible active sites on the surface.

Nonaqueous Solvent Extraction for Enhanced Metal Separations: Concept, Systems, and Mechanisms.

Project description:Efficient and sustainable separation of metals is gaining increasing attention, because of the essential roles of many metals in sustainable technologies for a climate-neutral society, such as rare earths in permanent magnets and cobalt, nickel, and manganese in the cathode materials of lithium-ion batteries. The separation and purification of metals by conventional solvent extraction (SX) systems, which consist of an organic phase and an aqueous phase, has limitations. By replacing the aqueous phase with other polar solvents, either polar molecular organic solvents or ionic solvents, nonaqueous solvent extraction (NASX) largely expands the scope of SX, since differences in solvation of metal ions lead to different distribution behaviors. This Review emphasizes enhanced metal extraction and remarkable metal separations observed in NASX systems and discusses the effects of polar solvents on the extraction mechanisms according to the type of polar solvents and the type of extractants. Furthermore, the considerable effects of the addition of water and complexing agents on metal separations in terms of metal ion solvation and speciation are highlighted. Efforts to integrate NASX into metallurgical flowsheets and to develop closed-loop solvometallurgical processes are also discussed. This Review aims to construct a framework of NASX on which many more studies on this topic, both fundamental and applied, can be built.

Amyloid-specific extraction using organic solvents.

Project description:Typing of amyloidosis by mass spectrometry (MS) based proteomic analysis contribute to the diagnosis of amyloidosis. For MS analysis, laser microdissection (LMD) is used for amyloid specific sampling. This study aimed to establish a method for selectively extracting amyloids from formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded (FFPE) specimens by organic solvent instead of LMD. The extracts using dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), dimethylformamide (DMF), methanol, trifluoroethanol (TFE) or hexafluoro-2-propanol from FFPE brain of alzheimer's disease mouse model generated protein bands on SDS-PAGE, and Aβ was identified in the extract of DMF using mass spectrometry. The extract using DMSO from the kidney of a AA amyloidosis patient produced a protein band in SDS-PAGE. This protein band was identified to be serum amyloid A (SAA) by Western blotting and mass spectrometry. Circular dichroism spectrometry revealed that the secondary structures of Aβ and transthyretin were converted to α-helices from β-sheets in TFE. Our results suggest that organic solvents can extract amyloids from FFPE specimens by converting their secondary structure. This method could eliminate the LMD step and simplified amyloid typing by MS analysis. •DMSO, DMF, methanol, TFE and HFIP can extract Aβ specifically from the FFPE brain of a Alzheimer' disease mouse model.•DMSO can extract SAA specifically from a FFPE section of AA amyloidosis.•Secondary structures of Aβ and transthyretin converted from β-sheet to α-helix in TFE.

Enhancing the antimicrobial activity of natural extraction using the synthetic ultrasmall metal nanoparticles.

Project description:The use of Catechin as an antibacterial agent is becoming ever-more common, whereas unstable and easy oxidation, have limited its application. A simple and low-energy-consuming approach to synthesize highly stable and dispersive Catechin-Cu nanoparticles(NPs) has been developed, in which the stability and dispersivity of the NPs are varied greatly with the pH value and temperature of the reaction. The results demonstrate that the optimal reaction conditions are pH 11 at room temperature. As-synthesized NPs display excellent antimicrobial activity, the survival rates of bacterial cells exposed to the NPs were evaluated using live/dead Bacterial Viability Kit. The results showed that NPs at the concentration of 10 ppm and 20 ppm provided rapid and effective killing of up to 90% and 85% of S. aureus and E. coli within 3 h, respectively. After treatment with 20 ppm and 40 ppm NPs, the bacteria are killed completely. Furthermore, on the basis of assessing the antibacterial effects by SEM, TEM, and AFM, it was found the cell membrane damage of the bacteria caused by direct contact of the bacteria with the NPs was the effective mechanism in the bacterial inactivation.

Nanoparticle-Based Liquid-Liquid Extraction for the Determination of Metal Ions.

Project description:Traditional liquid phase extraction techniques that use optically responsive ligands provide benefits that enable cost-efficient and rapid measurements. However, these approaches have limitations in their excessive use of organic solvents and multistep procedures. Here, we developed a simple, nanoscale extraction approach by replacing the macroscopic organic phase with hydrophobic polymeric nanoparticles that are dispersed in an aqueous feed. The concentration of analytes in polymeric nanoparticle suspensions is governed by similar partition principles to liquid-liquid phase extraction techniques. By encasing optically responsive metal ligands inside polymeric nanoparticles, we introduce a one-step metal quantification assay based on traditional two-phase extraction methodologies. As an initial proof of concept, we encapsulated bathophenanthroline (BP) inside the particles to extract then quantify Fe2+ with colorimetry in a dissolved supplement tablet and creek water. These Fe2+ nanosensors are sensitive and selective and report out with fluorescence by adding a fluorophore (DiO) into the particle core. To show that this new rapid extraction assay is not exclusive to measuring Fe2+, we replaced BP with either 8-hydroxyquinoline or bathocuproine to measure Al3+ or Cu+, respectively, in water samples. Utilizing this nanoscale extraction approach will allow users to rapidly quantify metals of interest without the drawbacks of larger-scale phase extraction approaches while also allowing for the expansion of phase extraction methodologies into areas of biological research.

CO2-Switchable Solvents as Entrainer in Fluid Separations.

Project description:CO2-switchable solvents, typically neutral solvents that switch with CO2 into ionic species, were investigated for use as entrainer in fluid separations such as extractive distillation. Their switchable nature was investigated, which may facilitate liquid-liquid extraction or extractive distillation as ionic liquid (IL), whereas during regeneration their decarboxylation into the amine form prevents temperature shoot-up. Studied elements included a property screening and detailed mechanistic and kinetic studies on the switching of 2-ethylhexylamine and N,N-benzyl methylamine. Decarboxylation of a 50 vol % switchable solvent, 25 vol % heptane, and 25 vol % toluene mixture at 1.00 × 104 Pa showed a 40% CO2 release before reaching the operational pressure, and total decarboxylation took over 2 h. An effective increase of the relative volatility of heptane/toluene was found, showing that, indeed, CO2-switchable solvents can be applied for extractive distillation. However, low pressure in combination with elevated temperature will lead to quick decarboxylation, limiting the operational window of this class of solvents. Their use in low temperature application such as C4-distillations or liquid-liquid extraction appears more suited.
