ABSTRACT: While current M0 /MII based polymerization strategies largely focus on fine-tuning the catalyst, reagents and conditions for each and every monomer, this report discloses a single method that allows access to a variety of different conjugated polymers within seconds at room temperature. Key to this privileged reactivity is an air- and moisture stable dinuclear PdI catalyst. The method is operationally simple, robust and tolerant to air.

Rearrangement Strategy for the Preparation of Polymers With π-Conjugated Structures.

Project description:π-Conjugated polymers are usually prepared by polymerization only. In this perspective article, typical synthesis methods of conjugated polymers are briefly summarized, and a novel strategy for preparing conjugated polymers by rearrangement is proposed. During the metalation process, many conjugated structures were generated in polybutadiene by double bond migration. The effects of reaction time, temperature, and catalyst dosage on the product structure were investigated. Moreover, the structure of the products was confirmed by FTIR, 1H NMR, and 2D HSQC NMR spectra. Thus, a possible reaction mechanism was proposed, in which polybutadiene generates allylic carbanions in the presence of n-butyllithium, and then the double bonds migrate through the carbanions rearrangement to generate many conjugated structures in the backbone chain. The method shows promise in facile and low-cost synthesis of conjugated polymers without the need for precious metal catalysts.

A Next-Generation Air-Stable Palladium(I) Dimer Enables Olefin Migration and Selective C-C Coupling in Air.

Project description:We report a new air-stable PdI dimer, [Pd(μ-I)(PCy2 t Bu)]2 , which triggers E-selective olefin migration to enamides and styrene derivatives in the presence of multiple functional groups and with complete tolerance of air. The same dimer also triggers extremely rapid C-C coupling (alkylation and arylation) at room temperature in a modular and triply selective fashion of aromatic C-Br, C-OTf/OFs, and C-Cl bonds in poly(pseudo)halogenated arenes, displaying superior activity over previous PdI dimer generations for substrates that bear substituents ortho to C-OTf.

Selective ortho-Functionalization of Adamantylarenes Enabled by Dispersion and an Air-Stable Palladium(I) Dimer.

Project description:Contrary to the general belief that Pd-catalyzed cross-coupling at sites of severe steric hindrance are disfavored, we herein show that the oxidative addition to C-Br ortho to an adamantyl group is as favored as the corresponding adamantyl-free system due to attractive dispersion forces. This enabled the development of a fully selective arylation and alkylation of C-Br ortho to an adamantyl group, even if challenged with competing non-hindered C-OTf or C-Cl sites. The method makes use of an air-stable PdI dimer and enables straightforward access to diversely substituted therapeutically important adamantylarenes in 5-30 min.

sSPhos: A General Ligand for Enantioselective Arylative Phenol Dearomatization via Electrostatically-Directed Palladium Catalysis.

Project description:Arylative phenol dearomatization affords complex, cyclohexanone-based scaffolds from simple starting materials, and asymmetric versions allow access to valuable enantioenriched structures. However, bespoke chiral ligands must typically be identified for each new scaffold variation. We have addressed this limitation by applying the concept of electrostatically-directed palladium catalysis whereby the chiral sulfonated ligand sSPhos engages in electrostatic interactions with a phenolate substrate via its associated alkali metal cation. This approach allows access to highly enantioenriched spirocyclohexadienones, a process originally reported by Buchwald and co-workers in a predominantly racemic manner. In addition, sSPhos is proficient at forming two other distinct scaffolds, which had previously required fundamentally different chiral ligands, as well as a novel oxygen-linked scaffold. We envisage that the broad generality displayed by sSPhos will facilitate the expansion of this important reaction type and highlight the potential of this unusual design principle, which harnesses attractive electrostatic interactions.

Approaching disorder-tolerant semiconducting polymers.

Project description:Doping has been widely used to control the charge carrier concentration in organic semiconductors. However, in conjugated polymers, n-doping is often limited by the tradeoff between doping efficiency and charge carrier mobilities, since dopants often randomly distribute within polymers, leading to significant structural and energetic disorder. Here, we screen a large number of polymer building block combinations and explore the possibility of designing n-type conjugated polymers with good tolerance to dopant-induced disorder. We show that a carefully designed conjugated polymer with a single dominant planar backbone conformation, high torsional barrier at each dihedral angle, and zigzag backbone curvature is highly dopable and can tolerate dopant-induced disorder. With these features, the designed diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP)-based polymer can be efficiently n-doped and exhibit high n-type electrical conductivities over 120 S cm-1, much higher than the reference polymers with similar chemical structures. This work provides a polymer design concept for highly dopable and highly conductive polymeric semiconductors.

Curved ?-conjugated corannulene dimer diradicaloids.

Project description:So far, most reported open-shell singlet diradicaloids are based on planar ?-conjugated molecules. Herein, we report the bridged corannulene dimer diradicaloids, Cor-D1 and Cor-D2, both showing a three-dimensional curved ?-conjugated structure. Cor-D1 has a small diradical character (y0 = 5.4%) and behaves more like a closed-shell quinoidal compound at room temperature, while Cor-D2 is a typical open-shell diradicaloid with a larger diradical character (y0 = 16.9%). Both compounds exhibited paramagnetic activity at elevated temperatures, with a singlet-triplet energy gap (?ES-T) of -8.4 and -3.0 kcal mol-1, respectively. X-ray crystallographic analysis revealed that both molecules have a dumbbell-shaped geometry, with the two terminal corannulene bowls bent to opposite directions. The spin is largely delocalized onto the two bowls in Cor-D2 and there are multiple [CH···?] interactions between the neighboring bowls. Chemical oxidation/reduction to their respective dications/dianions results in global aromaticity with [4n + 2] ?-electrons delocalized through the periphery of the whole framework.

Palladium(I) Dimer Enabled Extremely Rapid and Chemoselective Alkylation of Aryl Bromides over Triflates and Chlorides in Air.

Project description:Disclosed herein is the first general chemo- and site-selective alkylation of C-Br bonds in the presence of COTf, C-Cl and other potentially reactive functional groups, using the air-, moisture-, and thermally stable dinuclear PdI catalyst, [Pd(μ-I)PtBu3 ]2 . The bromo-selectivity is independent of the substrate and the relative positioning of the competing reaction sites, and as such fully predictable. Primary and secondary alkyl chains were introduced with extremely high speed (<5 min reaction time) at room temperature and under open-flask reaction conditions.

Advances in Conjugated Microporous Polymers.

Project description:Conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs) are a unique class of materials that combine extended ?-conjugation with a permanently microporous skeleton. Since their discovery in 2007, CMPs have become established as an important subclass of porous materials. A wide range of synthetic building blocks and network-forming reactions offers an enormous variety of CMPs with different properties and structures. This has allowed CMPs to be developed for gas adsorption and separations, chemical adsorption and encapsulation, heterogeneous catalysis, photoredox catalysis, light emittance, sensing, energy storage, biological applications, and solar fuels production. Here we review the progress of CMP research since its beginnings and offer an outlook for where these materials might be headed in the future. We also compare the prospect for CMPs against the growing range of conjugated crystalline covalent organic frameworks (COFs).

Sequencing conjugated polymers by eye.

Project description:The solid-state microstructure of a conjugated polymer is the most important parameter determining its properties and performance in (opto)-electronic devices. A huge amount of research has been dedicated to tuning and understanding how the sequence of monomers, the nature and frequency of defects, the exact backbone conformation, and the assembly and crystallinity of conjugated polymers affect their basic photophysics and charge transporting properties. However, because of the lack of reliable high-resolution analytical techniques, all the structure-property relations proposed in the literature are based either on molecular modeling or on indirect experimental data averaged on polydisperse samples. We show that a combination of electrospray vacuum deposition and high-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy allows the imaging of individual conjugated polymers with unprecedented detail, thereby unraveling structural and self-assembly characteristics that have so far been impossible to determine.

Regio- and sequence-controlled conjugated topological oligomers and polymers via boronate-tag assisted solution-phase strategy.

Project description:The regulation of polymer topology and the precise control over the monomer sequence is crucial and challenging in polymer science. Herein, we report an efficient solution-phase synthetic strategy to prepare regio- and sequence-controlled conjugated polymers with topological variations via the usage of methyliminodiacetic acid (MIDA) boronates. Based on the solubility of MIDA boronates and their unusual binary affinity for silica gel, the synthesized regio- and sequence-defined conjugated oligomers can be rapidly purified via precipitation or automatic liquid chromatography. These synthesized discrete oligomers can be used for iterative exponential and sequential growth to obtain linear and dendrimer-like star polymers. Moreover, different topological sequence-controlled conjugated polymers are conveniently prepared from these discrete oligomers via condensation polymerization. By investigating the structure-property relationship of these polymers, we find that the optical properties are strongly influenced by the regiochemistry, which may give inspiration to the design of optoelectronic polymeric materials.
