Porous Multicomponent Mn-Sn-Co Oxide Microspheres as Anodes for High-Performance Lithium-Ion Batteries.

ABSTRACT: Porous multicomponent Mn-Sn-Co oxide microspheres (MnSnO₃-MC400 and MnSnO₃-MC500) have been fabricated using CoSn(OH)₆ nanocubes as templates via controlling pyrolysis of a CoSn(OH)₆/Mn_0.5Co_0.5CO₃ precursor at different temperatures in N₂. During the pyrolysis process of CoSn(OH)₆/Mn_0.5Co_0.5CO₃ from 400 to 500 °C, the part of (Co,Mn)(Co,Mn)₂O₄ converts into MnCo₂O₄ accompanied with structural transformation. The MnSnO₃-MC400 and MnSnO₃-MC500 microspheres as secondary nanomaterials consist of MnSnO₃, MnCo₂O₄, and (Co,Mn)(Co,Mn)₂O₄. Benefiting from the advantages of multicomponent synergy and porous secondary nanomaterials, the MnSnO₃-MC400 and MnSnO₃-MC500 microspheres as anodes exhibit the specific capacities of 1030 and 750 mA h g^-1 until 1000 cycles at 1 A g^-1 without an obvious capacity decay, respectively.

Project description:Herein, we report the feasibility to enhance the capacity and stability of CoMn(2)O(4) anode materials by fabricating hierarchical mesoporous structure. The open space between neighboring nanosheets allows for easy diffusion of the electrolyte. The hierarchical microspheres assembled with nanosheets can ensure that every nanosheet participates in the electrochemical reaction, because every nanosheet is contacted with the electrolyte solution. The hierarchical structure and well interconnected pores on the surface of nanosheets will enhance the CoMn(2)O(4)/electrolyte contact area, shorten the Li(+) ion diffusion length in the nanosheets, and accommodate the strain induced by the volume change during the electrochemical reaction. The last, hierarchical architecture with spherical morphology possesses relatively low surface energy, which results in less extent of self-aggregation during charge/discharge process. As a result, CoMn(2)O(4) hierarchical microspheres can achieve a good cycle ability and high rate capability.

Hollow porous SiO2 nanocubes towards high-performance anodes for lithium-ion batteries.

Project description:The high theoretical capacity and low discharge potential of silicon have attracted much attention on Si-based anodes. Herein, hollow porous SiO2 nanocubes have been prepared via a two-step hard-template process and evaluated as electrode materials for lithium-ion batteries. The hollow porous SiO2 nanocubes exhibited a reversible capacity of 919 mAhg(-1) over 30 cycles. The reasonable property could be attributed to the unique hollow nanostructure with large volume interior and numerous crevices in the shell, which could accommodate the volume change and alleviate the structural strain during Li ions' insertion and extraction, as well as allow rapid access of Li ions during charge/discharge cycling. It is found that the formation of irreversible or reversible lithium silicates in the anodes determines the capacity of a deep-cycle battery, fast transportation of Li ions in hollow porous SiO2 nanocubes is beneficial to the formation of Li2O and Si, contributing to the high reversible capacity.

Tin Oxide Based Nanomaterials and Their Application as Anodes in Lithium-Ion Batteries and Beyond.

Project description:Herein, recent progress in the field of tin oxide (SnO2 )-based nanosized and nanostructured materials as conversion and alloying/dealloying-type anodes in lithium-ion batteries and beyond (sodium- and potassium-ion batteries) is briefly discussed. The first section addresses the importance of the initial SnO2 micro- and nanostructure on the conversion and alloying/dealloying reaction upon lithiation and its impact on the microstructure and cyclability of the anodes. A further section is dedicated to recent advances in the fabrication of diverse 0D to 3D nanostructures to overcome stability issues induced by large volume changes during cycling. Additionally, the role of doping on conductivity and synergistic effects of redox-active and -inactive dopants on the reversible lithium-storage capacity and rate capability are discussed. Furthermore, the synthesis and electrochemical properties of nanostructured SnO2 /C composites are reviewed. The broad research spectrum of SnO2 anode materials is finally reflected in a brief overview of recent work published on Na- and K-ion batteries.

Inward lithium-ion breathing of hierarchically porous silicon anodes.

Project description:Silicon has been identified as a highly promising anode for next-generation lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). The key challenge for Si anodes is large volume change during the lithiation/delithiation cycle that results in chemomechanical degradation and subsequent rapid capacity fading. Here we report a novel fabrication method for hierarchically porous Si nanospheres (hp-SiNSs), which consist of a porous shell and a hollow core. On charge/discharge cycling, the hp-SiNSs accommodate the volume change through reversible inward Li breathing with negligible particle-level outward expansion. Our mechanics analysis revealed that such inward expansion is enabled by the much stiffer lithiated layer than the unlithiated porous layer. LIBs assembled with the hp-SiNSs exhibit high capacity, high power and long cycle life, which is superior to the current commercial Si-based anode materials. The low-cost synthesis approach provides a new avenue for the rational design of hierarchically porous structures with unique materials properties.

Constructing MoO2 Porous Architectures Using Graphene Oxide Flexible Supports for Lithium Ion Battery Anodes.

Project description:Graphene oxide flexibly supported MoO2 porous architectures (MoO2/GO) by decomposition of the prepared ammonium molybdate/GO preforms is fabricated. Focused ion beam microscope analysis shows that the inside structures of the architectures strongly depend on the percentages of the GO used as flexible supports: micrometer scale MoO2 particulates growing on the GO (micrometer MoO2/GO), 3D honeycomb-like nanoarchitectures (MoO2/GO nanohoneycomb), and layered MoO2/GO architectures are achieved at the percentage of GO at 4.3, 15.2, and 20.8 wt%, respectively. The lithium storage performance of the MoO2/GO architectures strongly depends on their inside structures. At the current density of 100 mA g-1, the capacities of the micrometer MoO2/GO, MoO2/GO nanohoneycomb, and layered MoO2/GO remain at 901, 1127, and 967 mAh g-1 after 100 cycles. The average coulombic efficiencies of micrometer MoO2/GO, MoO2/GO nanohoneycomb, and layered MoO2/GO electrodes are 97.6%, 99.3%, and 99.0%. Moreover, the rate performance shows even cycled at a high current density of 5000 mA g-1, the MoO2/GO nanohoneycomb can deliver the capacity as high as 461 mAh g-1. The MoO2/GO nanohoneycomb exhibits best performance attributed to its unique nanohoneycomb structure constructed with ultrafine MoO2 fixed on the GO flexible supports.

0D-1D Hybrid Silicon Nanocomposite as Lithium-Ion Batteries Anodes.

Project description:Lithium ion batteries (LIBs) are the enabling technology for many of the societal changes that are expected to happen in the following years. Among all the challenges for which LIBs are the key, vehicle electrification is one of the most crucial. Current battery materials cannot provide the required power densities for such applications and therefore, it makes necessary to develop new materials. Silicon is one of the proposed as next generation battery materials, but still there are challenges to overcome. Poor capacity retention is one of those drawbacks, and because it is tightly related with its high capacity, it is a problem rather difficult to address with common and scalable fabrication processes. Here we show that combining 0D and 1D silicon nanostructures, high capacity and stability can be achieved even using standard electrode fabrication processes. Capacities as high as 1200 mAh/g for more than 500 cycles at high current densities (2 A/g) were achieved with the produced hybrid 0D/1D electrodes. In this research, it was shown that while 0D nanostructures provide good strain relaxation capabilities, 1D nanomaterials contribute with enhanced cohesion and conductive matrix integrity.

Heteroatom Doped-Carbon Nanospheres as Anodes in Lithium Ion Batteries.

Project description:Long cycle performance is a crucial requirement in energy storage devices. New formulations and/or improvement of "conventional" materials have been investigated in order to achieve this target. Here we explore the performance of a novel type of carbon nanospheres (CNSs) with three heteroatom co-doped (nitrogen, phosphorous and sulfur) and high specific surface area as anode materials for lithium ion batteries. The CNSs were obtained from carbonization of highly-crosslinked organo (phosphazene) nanospheres (OPZs) of 300 nm diameter. The OPZs were synthesized via a single and facile step of polycondensation reaction between hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene (HCCP) and 4,4'-sulphonyldiphenol (BPS). The X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) analysis showed a high heteroatom-doping content in the structure of CNSs while the textural evaluation from the N₂ sorption isotherms revealed the presence of micro- and mesopores and a high specific surface area of 875 m²/g. The CNSs anode showed remarkable stability and coulombic efficiency in a long charge-discharge cycling up to 1000 cycles at 1C rate, delivering about 130 mA·h·g-1. This study represents a step toward smart engineering of inexpensive materials with practical applications for energy devices.

Porous Amorphous Silicon Hollow Nanoboxes Coated with Reduced Graphene Oxide as Stable Anodes for Sodium-Ion Batteries.

Project description:Amorphous silicon (a-Si), due to its satisfactory theoretical capacity, moderate discharge potential, and abundant reserves, is treated as one of the most prospective materials for the anode of sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). However, the slow Na+ diffusion kinetics, poor electrical conductivity, and rupture-prone structures of a-Si restrict its further development. In this work, a composite (a-Si@rGO) consisting of porous amorphous silicon hollow nanoboxes (a-Si HNBs) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) is prepared. The a-Si HNBs are synthesized through "sodiothermic reduction" of silica hollow nanoboxes at a relatively low temperature, and the rGO is covered on the surface of the a-Si HNBs by electrostatic interaction. The as-synthesized composite anode applying in SIBs exhibits a high initial discharge capacity of 681.6 mAh g-1 at 100 mA g-1, great stability over 2000 cycles at 800 mA g-1, and superior rate performance (261.2, 176.8, 130.3, 98.4, and 73.3 mAh g-1 at 100, 400, 800, 1500, and 3000 mA g-1, respectively). The excellent electrochemical properties are ascribed to synergistic action of the porous hollow nanostructure of a-Si and the rGO coating. This research not only offers an innovative synthetic means for the development of a-Si in various fields but also provides a practicable idea for the design of other alloy-type anodes.

Porous lithium cobalt oxide fabricated from metal-organic frameworks as a high-rate cathode for lithium-ion batteries.

Project description:Porous materials have many applications, such as energy storage, as catalysts and adsorption etc. Nevertheless, facile synthesis of porous materials remains a challenge. In this work, porous lithium cobalt oxide (LiCoO2) is fabricated directly from Co-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs, ZIF-67) and lithium salt via a facile solid state annealing approach. The temperature affect on the microstructure of LiCoO2 is also investigated. The as-prepared LiCoO2 shows a uniform porous structure. As a cathode for a lithium-ion battery (LIB), the LiCoO2 delivers excellent stability and superior rate capability. The as-prepared porous LiCoO2 delivers a reversible capacity of 106.5 mA h g-1 at 2C and with stable capacity retention of 96.4% even after 100 cycles. This work may provide an alternative pathway for the preparation of porous materials with broader applications.

Phosphorus-doped silicon nanorod anodes for high power lithium-ion batteries.

Project description:Heavy-phosphorus-doped silicon anodes were fabricated on CuO nanorods for application in high power lithium-ion batteries. Since the conductivity of lithiated CuO is significantly better than that of CuO, after the first discharge, the voltage cut-off window was then set to the range covering only the discharge-charge range of Si. Thus, the CuO core was in situ lithiated and acts merely as the electronic conductor in the following cycles. The Si anode presented herein exhibited a capacity of 990 mAh/g at the rate of 9 A/g after 100 cycles. The anode also presented a stable rate performance even at a current density as high as 20 A/g.
