Secretion principles are conserved from yeast to humans, and many yeast orthologs have established roles in synaptic vesicle exocytosis in the mammalian brain. Surprisingly, SEC4 orthologs and their effectors, the exocyst, are dispensable for synaptic vesicle exocytosis.
