Reactive Extrusion and Magnesium (II) N-Heterocyclic Carbene Catalyst in Continuous PLA Production.

ABSTRACT: Reactive extrusion and magnesium (II) N-heterocyclic carbene catalyst are successfully employed in continuous polylactide synthesis. The possibility of using six-membered N-heterocyclic carbene adducts to act as efficient catalysts towards the sustainable synthesis of poly(l-lactide) through ring-opening polymerization of l-lactide (LA) is first investigated in bulk batch reactions. Under optimized solvent-free conditions, polylactide (PLA) of moderate to high molecular weights and excellent optical activities are successfully achieved. These promising results are further applied in the continuous production of PLA in an extruder.

Project description:The synthesis of a new type of Hoveyda-Grubbs 2(nd) generation catalyst bearing a modified N-heterocyclic carbene ligands is reported. The new catalyst contains an NHC ligand symmetrically substituted with chromanyl moieties. The complex was tested in model CM and RCM reactions. It showed very high activity in CM reactions with electron-deficient ?,?-unsaturated compounds even at 0 °C. It was also examined in more demanding systems such as conjugated dienes and polyenes. The catalyst is stable, storable and easy to purify.

A Ruthenium Catalyst for Olefin Metathesis Featuring an Anti-Bredt N-Heterocyclic Carbene Ligand.

Project description:A ruthenium complex bearing an "anti-Bredt" N-heterocyclic carbene was synthesized, characterized and evaluated as a catalyst for olefin metathesis. Good conversions were observed at room temperature for the formation of di- and tri-substituted olefins by ring-closing metathesis. It also allowed for the ring-opening metathesis polymerization of cyclooctadiene, as well as for the cross-metathesis of cis-1,4-diacetoxy-2-butene with allyl-benzene, with enhanced Z/E kinetic selectivity over classical NHC-based catalysts.

Improved Mechanical, Thermal, and Hydrophobic Properties of PLA Modified with Alkoxysilanes by Reactive Extrusion Process.

Project description:An eco-friendly strategy for the modification of polylactic acid (PLA) surface properties, using a solvent-free process, is reported. Reactive extrusion (REX) allowed the formation of new covalent bonds between functional molecules and the PLA polymeric matrix, enhancing its mechanical properties and modifying surface hydrophobicity. To this end, the PLA backbone was modified using two alkoxysilanes, phenyltriethoxysilane and N-octyltriethoxysilane. The reactive extrusion process was carried out under mild conditions, using melting temperatures between 150 and 180 °C, 300 rpm as screw speed, and a feeding rate of 3 kg·h-1. To complete the study, flat tapes of neat and functionalized PLA were obtained through monofilament melt extrusion to quantify the enhancement of mechanical properties and hydrophobicity. The results verified that PLA modified with 3 wt% of N-octyltriethoxysilane improves mechanical and thermal properties, reaching Young's modulus values of 4.8 GPa, and PLA hydrophobic behavior, with values of water contact angle shifting from 68.6° to 82.2°.

Multifaceted Deactivation Dynamics of Fe(II) N-Heterocyclic Carbene Photosensitizers.

Project description:Excited state dynamics of three iron(II) carbene complexes that serve as prototype Earth-abundant photosensitizers were investigated by ultrafast optical spectroscopy. Significant differences in the dynamics between the investigated complexes down to femtosecond time scales are used to characterize fundamental differences in the depopulation of triplet metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (3MLCT) excited states in the presence of energetically accessible triplet metal-centered (3MC) states. Novel insights into the full deactivation cascades of the investigated complexes include evidence of the need to revise the deactivation model for a prominent iron carbene prototype complex, a refined understanding of complex 3MC dynamics, and a quantitative discrimination between activated and barrierless deactivation steps along the 3MLCT → 3MC → 1GS path. Overall, the study provides an improved understanding of photophysical limitations and opportunities for the use of iron(II)-based photosensitizers in photochemical applications.

Poly(styrene)-supported N-heterocyclic carbene coordinated iron chloride as a catalyst for delayed polyurethane polymerization.

Project description:An advanced organometallic catalyst based on N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) coordinated FeCl3 has been synthesized and used to control the reaction rate in polyurethane (PUR) polymerization. The imidazolium (Im)-based NHC was functionalized on the surface of the supporting material of bead-type chloromethyl polystyrene (PS) resin. The PS-Im-FeCl3 catalyst was synthesized through the coordination reaction between Im and FeCl3. The successful formation, functional groups, structure, and geometry of the PS-Im-FeCl3 catalysts were confirmed by Fourier transform infrared and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy techniques. A thin layer of Im was observed to be coated uniformly on the PS bead surface and FeCl3 nanoparticles were observed to cover the coating layer homogeneously, as determined by field-emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy measurements. The PUR polymerization reaction was investigated through viscosity measurements and non-isothermal activation energy calculations by differential scanning calorimetry analysis. Based on the viscosity measurements, delayed PUR polymerization was achieved using the PS-Im-FeCl3 catalyst system. The highest viscosity (6000 cP) was achieved without any catalyst, with triphenylene bismuth, and with the PS-Im-FeCl3 catalyst after 23, 5, and 25 h of reaction time, respectively. Furthermore, the calculated activation energies (E a) were 27.92 and 36.35 kJ mol-1 for the no-catalyst and the PS-Im-FeCl3 systems, respectively. Thus, the viscosity measurements and DSC analyses confirm that the PS-Im-FeCl3 catalyst considerably increases the PUR reaction time. The Im-FeCl3 catalyst supported by CMPS can control the reaction rate in PUR synthesis because of its high activity. Thus, the PS-Im-FeCl3 catalyst can be used as a curing retardant in the PUR industry.

Rational design of galactopyranoside-substituted N-heterocyclic carbene palladium(ii) complexes. Stable and efficient catalyst for C-C coupling in aqueous media.

Project description:Following a rational design, three novel palladium(ii) complexes bearing galactopyranoside-based N-heterocyclic carbene ligands have been synthesized via transmetalation of the corresponding Ag(i) complexes. Palladium(ii) complexes have been characterized by NMR, FT-IR and elemental analysis. Catalytic studies, using the Stille and Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reactions as model C-C coupling, reveal that the complexes are active and reusable. The best results in terms of TON values were achieved in aqueous medium using either the in situ deacetylation of the catalyst or the previously deacetylated catalyst. The catalytic condition using in situ deacetylation was more efficient because it avoids an additional deprotection step.

Intersystem Crossing and Triplet Dynamics in an Iron(II) N-Heterocyclic Carbene Photosensitizer.

Project description:The electronic excited states of the iron(II) complex [FeII(tpy)(pyz-NHC)]2+ [tpy = 2,2':6',2″-terpyridine; pyz-NHC = 1,1'-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)pyrazinyldiimidazolium-2,2'-diylidene] and their relaxation pathways have been theoretically investigated. To this purpose, trajectory surface-hopping simulations within a linear vibronic coupling model including a 244-dimensional potential energy surface (PES) with 20 singlet and 20 triplet coupled states have been used. The simulations show that, after excitation to the lowest-energy absorption band of predominant metal-to-ligand charge-transfer character involving the tpy ligand, almost 80% of the population undergoes intersystem crossing to the triplet manifold in about 50 fs, while the remaining 20% decays through internal conversion to the electronic ground state in about 300 fs. The population transferred to the triplet states is found to deactivate into two different regions of the PESs, one where the static dipole moment is small and shows increased metal-centered character and another with a large static dipole moment, where the electron density is transferred from the tpy to pyz-NHC ligand. Coherent oscillations of 400 fs are observed between these two sets of triplet populations, until the mixture equilibrates to a ratio of 60:40. Finally, the importance of selecting suitable normal modes is highlighted-a choice that can be far from straightforward in transition-metal complexes with hundreds of degrees of freedom.

Continuous, Large-Scale, and High Proportion of Bioinspired Phosphogypsum Composites via Reactive Extrusion.

Project description:Biological matter evolution provides an idea for the human design and synthesis of new materials. However, biomimetic materials only stay in laboratory-scale models, and their large-scale industrial applications are yet to be realized. Here, inspired by nacre's architecture, we report a continuous, large-scale method to fabricate phosphogypsum composites by reactive extrusion strategy. After curing for seven days, with more than 50 wt% of beta-hemihydrate phosphogypsum (β-HPG), the compressive strength and softening coefficient were 24.98 MPa and 0.78, increasing by 110.0% and 20.0%, respectively, compared to the pouring method. The results show that the screw extrusion process can improve the mechanical strength and waterproof properties of β-HPG hydration specimens without any special chemical admixtures and cements.

N-Heterocyclic Carbene Capture by Cytochrome P450 3A4.

Project description:Cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) is the dominant P450 enzyme involved in human drug metabolism, and its inhibition may result in adverse interactions or, conversely, favorably reduce the systemic elimination rates of poorly bioavailable drugs. Herein we describe a spectroscopic investigation of the interaction of CYP3A4 with N-methylritonavir, an analog of ritonavir, widely used as a pharmacoenhancer. In contrast to ritonavir, the binding affinity of N-methylritonavir for CYP3A4 is pH-dependent. At pH <7.4, the spectra are definitively type I, whereas at pH ?7.4 the spectra have split Soret bands, including a red-shifted component characteristic of a P450-carbene complex. Variable-pH UV-visible spectroscopy binding studies with molecular fragments narrows the source of this pH dependence to its N-methylthiazolium fragment. The C2 proton of this group is acidic, and variable-pH resonance Raman spectroscopy tentatively assigns it a pKa of 7.4. Hence, this fragment of N-methylritonavir is expected to be readily deprotonated under physiologic conditions to yield a thiazol-2-ylidene, which is an N-heterocyclic carbene that has high-affinity for and is presumed to be subsequently captured by the heme iron. This mechanism is supported by time-dependent density functional theory with an active site model that accurately reproduces distinguishing features of the experimental UV-visible spectra of N-methylritonavir bound to CYP3A4. Finally, density functional theory calculations support that this novel interaction is as strong as the tightest-binding azaheterocycles found in P450 inhibitors and could offer new avenues for inhibitor development.
