ABSTRACT: The data set contains the data of variables, such as indicators of forms or host markets of the Chinese listed firms, pre-IPO or listing firm characteristics and post-IPO or listing stock returns. These variables can be used to estimate the probabilities of overseas listing in specific forms or locations through binary probit or multinomial logistic regression, and to evaluate the consequences of overseas listing in some specific forms or locations via the two-factor asset pricing model. Furthermore, these data can be used to estimate the models simultaneously within the potential outcome framework as done in the paper, entitled 'Direct overseas listing versus cross-listing: A multivalued treatment effects analysis of Chinese listed firms'. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.irfa.2019.101391.

Project description:In this study, we examine how initial public offerings (IPO) entry rates are affected when stock markets are boundedly rational and IPO firms infer information from their counterparts in the market. We hypothesize a curvilinear relationship between the number of comparable stocks and initial public offerings (IPO) entry rates into the NASDAQ Stock Exchange. Furthermore, we argue that trading volume and changes in stock returns partially mediates the relationship between the number of comparable stocks and IPO entry rates. The statistical evidence provides strong support for the hypotheses.

The Effects of Twitter Sentiment on Stock Price Returns.

Project description:Social media are increasingly reflecting and influencing behavior of other complex systems. In this paper we investigate the relations between a well-known micro-blogging platform Twitter and financial markets. In particular, we consider, in a period of 15 months, the Twitter volume and sentiment about the 30 stock companies that form the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) index. We find a relatively low Pearson correlation and Granger causality between the corresponding time series over the entire time period. However, we find a significant dependence between the Twitter sentiment and abnormal returns during the peaks of Twitter volume. This is valid not only for the expected Twitter volume peaks (e.g., quarterly announcements), but also for peaks corresponding to less obvious events. We formalize the procedure by adapting the well-known "event study" from economics and finance to the analysis of Twitter data. The procedure allows to automatically identify events as Twitter volume peaks, to compute the prevailing sentiment (positive or negative) expressed in tweets at these peaks, and finally to apply the "event study" methodology to relate them to stock returns. We show that sentiment polarity of Twitter peaks implies the direction of cumulative abnormal returns. The amount of cumulative abnormal returns is relatively low (about 1-2%), but the dependence is statistically significant for several days after the events.

Investor attention on COVID-19 and African stock returns.

Project description:We examine the financial consequences of rising global investor attention or risk attitude related to the COVID-19 pandemic for African stock markets. Using daily investor attention indices, which are based on global COVD-19-related google search queries, and stock return indices for 14 African stock markets, we show that investor attention is an important determinant of stock returns. Our estimates suggest that an increase in investor attention consistently reduces stock returns in three stock markets, namely Botswana, Nigeria, and Zambia. In contrast, an increase in investor attention may enhance stock returns in Ghana and Tanzania. Our estimates imply that, in uncertain times like the current pandemic, stock markets like those of Ghana and Tanzania may offer potential diversification benefits to investors. We demonstrate that our estimates are broadly robust using a composite measure of investor attention.•We built a direct and unambiguous measure of investor attention or risk attitude related to the COVID-19 pandemic.•In an exponential generalised autoregressive heteroskedasticity of order one (i.e. EGARCH(1,1)) framework, we regressed stock returns on their first lags, investor attention, exchange rate returns, and commodity returns, and controlled for investor attention in the variance equation.

COVID-19 lockdowns, stimulus packages, travel bans, and stock returns.

Project description:This paper examines the effect of government responses of G7 countries to the coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) on stock market returns. Using time-series data, we show that lockdowns, travel bans, and economic stimulus packages all had a positive effect on the G7 stock markets. However, lockdowns were most effective in cushioning the effects of COVID-19. Our results are robust to different measures of returns and controls for other factors of returns.

Sign realized jump risk and the cross-section of stock returns: Evidence from China's stock market.

Project description:Using 5-minute high frequency data from the Chinese stock market, we employ a non-parametric method to estimate Fama-French portfolio realized jumps and investigate whether the estimated positive, negative and sign realized jumps could forecast or explain the cross-sectional stock returns. The Fama-MacBeth regression results show that not only have the realized jump components and the continuous volatility been compensated with risk premium, but also that the negative jump risk, the positive jump risk and the sign jump risk, to some extent, could explain the return of the stock portfolios. Therefore, we should pay high attention to the downside tail risk and the upside tail risk.

Data of CEO power, chair-CEO age dissimilarity and pay gap of Chinese listed firms.

Project description:This data describes the raw and processed information such as salary, power, and age of the CEO and the chairman between 2009 and 2018 in China's listed firms. The data set contains the data of variables based on the characteristic of the firm, personal, team, and supervision. The dissimilarities and similarities of the characteristics between the chairman and the CEO are the core of this data set. The dissimilarities refer to individual and team differences. Individual differences refer to differences in age, gender, tenure, experience, shareholding, and salary of the chairman and CEO, while team differences refer to differences in team size and the standard deviation of the management board members' age. The similarities refer to joint tenure and family relations between the chairman and CEO. These variables can be used to estimate the impact of chair-CEO age dissimilarity on the relationship between CEO power and chair-CEO pay gap of the Chinese listed firms through binary probit or multinomial regression.

Innovation indicators based on firm websites-Which website characteristics predict firm-level innovation activity?

Project description:Web-based innovation indicators may provide new insights into firm-level innovation activities. However, little is known yet about the accuracy and relevance of web-based information for measuring innovation. In this study, we use data on 4,487 firms from the Mannheim Innovation Panel (MIP) 2019, the German contribution to the European Community Innovation Survey (CIS), to analyze which website characteristics perform as predictors of innovation activity at the firm level. Website characteristics are measured by several data mining methods and are used as features in different Random Forest classification models that are compared against each other. Our results show that the most relevant website characteristics are textual content, the use of English language, the number of subpages and the amount of characters on a website. In our main analysis, models using all website characteristics jointly yield AUC values of up to 0.75 and increase accuracy scores by up to 18 percentage points compared to a baseline prediction based on the sample mean. Moreover, predictions with website characteristics significantly differ from baseline predictions according to a McNemar test. Results also indicate a better performance for the prediction of product innovators and firms with innovation expenditures than for the prediction of process innovators.

Asymmetric dependence between stock market returns and news during COVID-19 financial turmoil.

Project description:•I investigate the stock market's reaction to coronavirus news in the top six most affected countries by the pandemic.•The fake news exerts a negative nonlinear influence on the inferior and the middle quantiles throughout the distribution of returns.•The media coverage leads to a decrease in returns across middle and superior quantiles and has no effects on the inferior ones.•During COVID19 turmoil superior quantiles of returns distribution exhibit negative dependence on past performances, while inferior and middle quantiles are not affected by this phenomenon.•The gold return has a positive correlation with the stock markets, which amplifies during extreme bearish and bullish periods indicating that it does not behave as a "Safe Havens" asset.

Project description:In today's business environment, organizations must continually and constantly reinvent themselves to stay relevant because they conduct operations in workplaces that are characterized by steady competition and erratic change. Most studies show that organizational improvement cannot occur without strategic changes directed to yield a difference in performance. Thus, improving performance requires the consideration of change-related policies and individuals' dispositions relevant to change. Strategic change as perceived by many authors requires qualitative changes and not simple continuous and usual changes. Strategic change must be aligned to the mission, and purpose of an organization. Employees' attitudes towards change strongly relates to their attitudes about their employer and changes at their organization because organizations continually commence new programs of organizational change, these ongoing and seemingly endless efforts put a lot of burden not only on organizations but also on individuals. Researchers highlight the challenges to strategic change as; poor organizational management and culture, increased technology installation, organizational structure, strong competition and employee issues. Attitudes toward strategic change are the feelings employees have toward different internal policies of the organization. Many investigations suggest that it is reasonable to expect employees to react to strategic change efforts since the process of change involves going from the known to the unknown. Consequently, it can be a very unpleasant experience for employees thus this article presents data in this regard.
