Regioselective Monobromination of Phenols with KBr and ZnAl-BrO3--Layered Double Hydroxides.

ABSTRACT: The regioselective mono-bromination of phenols has been successfully developed with KBr and ZnAl-BrO3--layered double hydroxides (abbreviated as ZnAl-BrO3--LDHs) as brominating reagents. The para site is much favorable and the ortho site takes the priority if para site is occupied. This reaction featured with excellent regioselectivity, cheap brominating reagents, mild reaction condition, high atom economy, broad substrate scope, and provided an efficient method to synthesize bromophenols.

ZnAl nano layered double hydroxides for dual functional CRISPR/Cas9 delivery and enhanced green fluorescence protein biosensor.

Project description:Evaluation of the effect of different parameters for designing a non-viral vector in gene delivery systems has great importance. In this manner, 2D crystals, precisely layered double hydroxides, have attracted the attention of scientists due to their significant adjustability and low-toxicity and low-cost preparation procedure. In this work, the relationship between different physicochemical properties of LDH, including pH, size, zeta potential, and synthesis procedure, was investigated and optimized for CRISPR/Cas9 delivery and reverse fluorescence response to the EGFP. In this manner, ZnAl LDH and ZnAl HMTA LDH were synthesized and characterized and applied in the HEK-293 cell line to deliver CRISPR/Cas9. The results were optimized by different characterizations as well as Gel Electrophoresis and showed acceptable binding ability with the DNA that could be considered as a promising and also new gold-standard for the delivery of CRISPR/Cas9. Also, the relationship of the presence of tertiary amines (in this case, hexamethylenetetramine (HMTA) as the templates) in the structure of the ZnAl LDH, as well as the gene delivery application, was evaluated. The results showed more than 79% of relative cell viability in most of the weight ratios of LDH to CRISPR/Cas9; fully quenching the fluorescence intensity of the EGFP/LDH in the presence of 15 µg mL-1 of the protoporphyrins along with the detection limit of below 2.1 µg mL-1, the transfection efficiency of around 33% of the GFP positive cell for ZnAl LDH and more than 38% for the ZnAl LDH in the presence of its tertiary amine template.

Core-shell zeolite@aqueous miscible organic-layered double hydroxides.

Project description:We report a general method for the synthesis of core-shell hybrid materials containing a microporous zeolite core with an aqueous miscible organic-layered double hydroxide (AMO-LDH) shell using a simple in situ coprecipitation method. For example, zeolite-HY@AMO-Mg2Al-CO3-LDH contains a 150 nm hierarchical AMO-Mg2Al-CO3-LDH surface coating on zeolite-HY. It exhibits a similar BET surface area (698 m2 g-1) as the parent zeolite-HY but this surface area has been re-allocated between microspores and mesopores. We believe that surface aluminium sites act as nucleation sites for the formation of the LDH coating and so robustly links it into the zeolite lattice. We expect that this new hybrid structure with micropores dominating in the core and mesopores populating the shell will provide a desirable new hybrid structure type for adsorption or catalysis.

Stability Trends in Mono-Metallic 3d Layered Double Hydroxides.

Project description:Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) constitute a unique group of 2D materials that can deliver exceptional catalytic, optical, and electronic performance. However, they usually suffer from low stability compared to their oxide counterparts. Using density functional calculations, we quantitatively demonstrate the crucial impact of the intercalants (i.e., water, lactate, and carbonate) on the stability of a series of common LDHs based on Mn, Fe, and Co. We found that intercalation with the singly charged lactate results in higher stability in all these LDH compounds, compared to neutral water and doubly charged carbonate. Furthermore, we show that the dispersion effect aids the stability of these LDH compounds. This investigation reveals that certain intercalants enhance LDH stability and alter the bandgap favourably.

Hydrothermal synthesis of multi-cationic high-entropy layered double hydroxides.

Project description:High-entropy materials are compositionally complex materials which often contain five or more elements. The most commonly studied materials in this field are alloys and oxides, where their composition allows for tunable materials properties. High-entropy layered double hydroxides have been recently touted as the next focus for the field of high-entropy materials to expand into. However, most previous work on multi-cationic layered double hydroxides has focused on syntheses with 5 or less cations in the structure. To bridge this gap into high-entropy materials, this work explores the range and extent of different compositional combinations for high-entropy double layered hydroxides. Specifically, pure layered double hydroxides were synthesized with different combinations of 7 cations (Mg, Co, Cu, Zn, Ni, Al, Fe, Cr) as well as one combination of 8 cations by utilizing a hydrothermal synthesis method. Furthermore, magnetic properties of the 8-cation LDH were investigated.

Polymer/Iron-Based Layered Double Hydroxides as Multifunctional Wound Dressings.

Project description:This work presents the development of multifunctional therapeutic membranes based on a high-performance block copolymer scaffold formed by polyether (PE) and polyamide (PA) units (known as PEBA) and layered double hydroxide (LDH) biomaterials, with the aim to study their uses as wound dressings. Two LDH layer compositions were employed containing Mg2+ or Zn2+, Fe3+ and Al3+ cations, intercalated with chloride anions, abbreviated as Mg-Cl or Zn-Cl, or intercalated with naproxenate (NAP) anions, abbreviated as Mg-NAP or Zn-NAP. Membranes were structurally and physically characterized, and the in vitro drug release kinetics and cytotoxicity assessed. PEBA-loading NaNAP salt particles were also prepared for comparison. Intercalated NAP anions improved LDH-polymer interaction, resulting in membranes with greater mechanical performance compared to the polymer only or to the membranes containing the Cl-LDHs. Drug release (in saline solution) was sustained for at least 8 h for all samples and release kinetics could be modulated: a slower, an intermediate and a faster NAP release were observed from membranes containing Zn-NAP, NaNAP and Mg-NAP particles, respectively. In general, cell viability was higher in the presence of Mg-LDH and the membranes presented improved performance in comparison with the powdered samples. PEBA containing Mg-NAP sample stood out among all membranes in all the evaluated aspects, thus being considered a great candidate for application as multifunctional therapeutic dressings.

Interaction of Pristine Hydrocalumite-Like Layered Double Hydroxides with Carbon Dioxide.

Project description:The layered double hydroxides (LDHs) of Ca2+ and trivalent cations, Al3+ and Fe3+, are single-source precursors to generate supported CaO, which picks up CO2 from the gas phase in the temperature range 350-550 °C. The supports are ternary oxides, mayenite, and Ca2Fe2O5. The uptake capacity of the Fe3+-containing LDH at 1.9 mmol g-1 is two times the capacity of the Al3+-containing LDH. The product of CO2 uptake is calcite CaCO3. It is observed that the intercalated chloride ions reduce the thermal penalty by inducing the early decomposition of CaCO3. In the case of the chloride-intercalated LDHs of Ca2+ and Fe3+, the CaCO3 formed is completely decomposed at 900 °C. This is in contrast with the CaCO3 formed from bare CaO, which shows no sign of decomposition at 900 °C under similar conditions. This work shows that the hydrocalumite-like LDHs are candidate materials for CO2 mineralization.

These materials exhibit hierarchical morphologies with high surface areas and good porosity. Chemically, these materials offer controllable bifunctional basicity and acidity.

Effect of Drying on the Fabrication of MgAl Layered Double Hydroxides.

Project description:This study aimed to evaluate the synthesis of MgAl/LDH from the drying process perspective, evaluating the influence of temperature (75-90 °C) and time (16-20 h) in the drying process. The synthesis was performed, maintaining a ratio of 2:1 of Mg/Al, and the drying was conducted according to a 22 experimental design: four axial points and three repetitions at the central point. The surface area and pore diameter ranged from 4.09 to 18.55 m2/g and 12.50 to 24.46 nm. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analysis indicated the drying-caused variation of the LDH typical bands intensities. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images showed the tendency of the increase of agglomeration with the temperature elevation. The drying parameters' influence was evident for X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis observing the crystallite size increment, from 13.10 to 38.94 nm, and basal spacing variation, from 7.52 to 7.64 Å. The statistical models for growing crystal and reduction of the basal spacing were physically consistent but with low values of R 2. The drying time and temperature had a considerable influence on the chemical, physical, structural, and morphological properties of LDH.

Data on energy consumption in the production of layered double hydroxides.

Project description:Electrocoagulation consists of the in-situ generation of the coagulant by the electro dissolution of sacrificial electrodes (Mg and Al). This technique, besides being normally used for water treatment, can be used to synthesize Layered Double Hydroxides (LDH) or Hydrotalcites (HT) such as green rust, MgAlCl/LDH, and other oxides as Magnetite. The HT has a high tendency for water in the interlayer to be replaced by anions, these exchange characteristics generate a high interest in the fields of drug administration, photodegradation, catalyst supports, supercapacitors, and water oxidation. There are several routes of synthesis for these compounds such as co-precipitation, hydrolysis of urea, hydrothermal treatment and a novel route by electrocoagulation (EC). This work discloses the data of the energy consumption at laboratory-scale production in the synthesis of hydrotalcite (HT) or Layered Double Hydroxides (LDH) by electrocoagulation, the values obtained through these experiments are intended to provide support due to the lack of information on the energy consumption of this novel production method. Aluminum and AZ31 electrodes were used as a cations source during two- and four-hours operation, at 50 °C with 5 mA cm-2 of current density, and 5 minutes of polarity change for Aluminum and 8 minutes for AZ31 (Magnesium alloy).
