Epimeria liui sp. nov., a new calcified amphipod (Amphipoda, Amphilochidea, Epimeriidae) from a seamount of the Caroline Plate, NW Pacific.

ABSTRACT: A calcified individual of Epimeria Costa, 1851 collected from an unnamed seamount of the Caroline Plate, NW Pacific, is recognized as new to science herein. This increases the number of known Epimeria species of the North Pacific to nine. Epimeria liui sp. nov. differs from its similar congeners by having a rostrum hardly reaching to the end margin of first peduncular article of antenna 1, the presence of large pyriform eyes, the size-increasing mid-dorsal teeth starting from pereonite 6 to pleonite 2, the projection on coxa 5 not extending to epimeral plate 1, and by having a nearly quadrate telson notched medially. To facilitate identification the new species is included in a key to Pacific species of Epimeria.

Project description:A new species of the subfamily Stegocephalinae, Stegocephaluscarolussp. nov., is described from a seamount in the Caroline Plate. Two related species, S.cascadiensis (Moore, 1992) and S.longicornis (Gurjanova, 1962), were previously reported in the North Pacific. Important morphological characters which differentiate S.carolussp. nov. from S.cascadiensis are found in antenna 1, the mouthparts, pereopod 7 and the length of rami of uropods 2 and 3. The new species differs from S.longicornis by characters of antenna 1, the mouthparts and the shape of epimeral plate 3. Additionally, the morphological differences between the new species and the remaining seven species of Stegocephalus are also presented.

A new cave amphipod, Pseudocrangonyx wonkimi sp. nov. (Crustacea, Amphipoda, Pseudocrangonyctidae), from the Korean Peninsula.

Project description:A new species of pseudocrangonyctid amphipod, Pseudocrangonyx wonkimi sp. nov., was found in the groundwater of a cave in the southwestern Korean Peninsula. Pseudocrangonyx wonkimi sp. nov. is morphologically most closely related to P. joolaeiLee et al., 2020. However, P. wonkimi is clearly distinguished from P. joolaei by lacking sternal gills, fewer setae on maxilla 1 inner plate, fewer serrate robust setae on the carpus of the gnathopods, lacking bifid setae on the inner ramus of pleopod 3, and fewer articles of rami on pleopod 3. We also determined sequences of mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) of P. wonkimi sp. nov. for molecular diagnosis. From the molecular analysis based on COI sequences, P. wonkimi showed the closest relationship with P. joolaei with 15.1% genetic distance.

The diel vertical distribution and carbon biomass of the zooplankton community in the Caroline Seamount area of the western tropical Pacific Ocean.

Project description:Zooplankton can affect and regulate the biological carbon pump in the biogeochemical cycles of marine ecosystems through diel vertical migration (DVM) behaviour. The diel vertical distribution and migration of a zooplankton community were studied at a continuous survey station in the Caroline Seamount area of the western tropical Pacific Ocean. Using a MultiNet sampling system, 346 zooplankton species/taxa were collected and identified. The vertical distribution patterns of abundance and composition of the zooplankton community differed between daytime and nighttime. The highest biodiversity index occurred in the 100-200-m ocean depth layer, but some zooplankton species remained in the deep-water layer below 300 m. The DVM patterns of the various dominant species differed, even when the species belonged to the same order or family. Dissolved oxygen and seawater temperature were the main environmental factors affecting the diel vertical distribution of the zooplankton community. The oxygen minimum zone was identified as performing the dual role of "ecological barrier" and "refuge" for zooplankton. The active carbon flux mediated by the zooplankton DVM in the Caroline Seamount area was 14.5 mg C/(m2·d). Our findings suggest that zooplankton DVM can affect and mediate the biological carbon pump in the Caroline Seamount area.

Subduction age and stress state control on seismicity in the NW Pacific subducting plate.

Project description:Intermediate depth (70-300 km) and deep (> 300 km) earthquakes have always been puzzling Earth scientists: their occurrence is a paradox, since the ductile behavior of rocks and the high confining pressure with increasing depths would theoretically preclude brittle failure and frictional sliding. The mechanisms proposed to explain deep earthquakes, mainly depending on the subducting plate age and stress state, are generally expressed by single parameters, unsuitable to comprehensively account for differences among distinct subduction zones or within the same slab. We analyze the Kurile and Izu-Bonin intraslab seismicity and detail the Gutenberg-Richter b-value along the subducted planes, interpreting its variation in terms of stress state, analogously to what usually done for shallow earthquakes. We demonstrate that, despite the slabs different properties (e.g., lithospheric age, stress state, dehydration rate), in both cases deep earthquakes are restricted to depths characterized by equal age from subduction initiation and are driven by stress regimes affected by the persistence of the metastable olivine wedge.

Mayaweckelia troglomorpha, a new subterranean amphipod species from Yucatan state, Mexico (Amphipoda, Hadziidae).

Project description:A detailed description of a new stygobiont species of the amphipod family Hadziidae, Mayaweckelia troglomorpha Angyal, sp. n. is given, based on material collected in four cenotes of Yucatán federal state, México. Morphology was studied under light microscopy and with scanning electron microscopy. Morphological description is complemented with mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) sequences as barcodes, with affinities to the related taxa and with notes on the species' ecology. Using COI Bayesian inference and genetic distance analyses, we show that the closest relative of the new species is M. cenoticola, forming a monophyletic group referring to the genus Mayaweckelia. Based on the available sequences, we also revealed that Mayaweckelia and Tuluweckelia are sister genera, standing close to the third Yucatán subterranean genus, Bahadzia. The data gathered on the habitat, distribution, abundance, and ecology will contribute to the conservation planning for M. troglomorpha Angyal, sp. n.

Description of Seba longimera sp. nov. from hydrothermal vents in the Okinawa Trough, Northwest Pacific (Amphipoda, Amphilochoidea, Sebidae).

Project description:Seba longimera sp. nov., of the family Sebidae Walker, 1908, is described from hydrothermal vents in Okinawa Trough. Other two congenic species, S. bathybia Larsen, 2007 and S. profundus Shaw, 1989, are also reported from these hydrothermal vents, but the new species can be readily distinguished from them in having the merus of pereopods 5 and 6 extending beyond distal margin of carpus, coxa 4 smaller than coxae 2 and 3, and coxa 5 with the posterior lobe larger than the anterior one, rather than equilobate.

The complete mitochondrial genome of the estuarine amphipod Grandidierella osakaensis (Crustacea: Amphipoda).

Project description:The complete mitochondrial genome sequence of an estuarine amphipod Grandidierella osakaensis was determined. The mitochondrial genome was 14,658 bp in length with 37 mitochondrial genes (13 protein-coding genes [PCGs], 2 ribosomal RNAs [rRNAs], and 22 transfer RNAs [tRNAs]). The order of PCGs of G. osakaensis was identical to those of other two Grandidierella species. A maximum likelihood-based phylogenetic analysis showed that G. osakaensis formed a monophyletic clade with the other two Grandidierella species within the infraorder Corophiida. The mitochondrial genome sequence obtained in this study provides useful information for further phylogenetic and ecological studies.

The complete mitochondrial genome of the deep-sea amphipod Eurythenes magellanicus (Crustacea: Amphipoda: Lysianassidae).

Project description:The complete mitochondrial genome of the deep sea amphipod Eurythenes magellanicus was determined in this paper. This molecular was 14,988 bp in length, and contained the typical 13 protein coding genes (PCGs), 22 transfer RNAs (tRNAs), two ribosomal RNAs (rRNAs) and one control region (CR). The gene order of E. magellanicus was identical to that from E. maldoror, a deep sea amphipod inhabiting in a deeper habitat than E. magellanicus. A maximum-likelihood tree based on the 13 PCGs from 25 amphipods indicated that E. magellanicus and E. maldoror were closely related and the origin of deep sea amphipods was not monophyletic.

Evidence for discrete solar and lunar orientation mechanisms in the beach amphipod, Talitrus saltator Montagu (Crustacea, Amphipoda).

Project description:Animals that use astronomical cues to orientate must make continuous adjustment to account for temporal changes in azimuth caused by Earth's rotation. For example, the Monarch butterfly possesses a time-compensated sun compass dependent upon a circadian clock in the antennae. The amphipod Talitrus saltator possesses both a sun compass and a moon compass. We reasoned that the time-compensated compass mechanism that enables solar orientation of T. saltator is located in the antennae, as is the case for Monarch butterflies. We examined activity rhythms and orientation of sandhoppers with antennae surgically removed, or unilaterally occluded with black paint. Removing or painting the antennae did not affect daily activity rhythms or competence to orientate using the sun. However, when tested at night these animals were unable to orientate correctly to the moon. We subsequently measured circadian gene expression in the antennae and brain of T. saltator and show the clock genes period and cryptochrome 2 are rhythmically expressed in both tissues, reminiscent of other arthropods known to possess antennal clocks. Together, our behavioural and molecular data suggest that, T. saltator has anatomically discrete lunar and solar orientation apparatus; a sun compass, likely located in the brain and a moon compass in the antennae.

Eurythenes atacamensis sp. nov. (Crustacea: Amphipoda) exhibits ontogenetic vertical stratification across abyssal and hadal depths in the Atacama Trench, eastern South Pacific Ocean.

Project description:Eurythenes S.I. Smith in Scudder, 1882 (Crustacea: Amphipoda) are prevalent scavengers of the benthopelagic community from bathyal to hadal depths. While a well-studied genus, molecular systematic studies have uncovered cryptic speciation and multiple undescribed lineages. Here, we apply an integrative taxonomic approach and describe the tenth species, Eurythenes atacamensis sp. nov., based on specimens from the 2018 Atacamex and RV Sonne SO261 Expeditions to the southern sector of the Peru-Chile Trench, the Atacama Trench (24-⁠21°S). Eurythenes atacamensis sp. nov. is a large species, max. observed length 83.2 mm, possesses diagnostic features, including a short gnathopod 1 palm and a chelate gnathopod 2 palm, and a distinct genetic lineage based on a 16S rRNA and COI phylogeny. This species is a dominant bait-attending fauna with an extensive bathymetric range, spanning from 4974 to 8081 m. The RV Sonne SO261 specimens were recovered along a 10-station transect from abyssal to hadal depths and further examined for demographic and bathymetric-related patterns. Ontogenetic vertical stratification was evident across the trench axis, with only juveniles present at abyssal depths (4974-6025 m). Total length-depth analysis revealed that the size of females was unrelated to depth, whereas juveniles followed a sigmoidal relationship with a step-up in size at depths >7200 m. Thus, these bathymetric trends suggest that juveniles and females employ differing ecological strategies in subduction trench environments. This study highlights that even dominant and ecologically important species are still being discovered within the abyssal and hadal environments. Continued systematic expeditions will lead to an improved understanding of the eco-evolutionary drivers of speciation in the world's largest ecosystem.
