Project description:Catalysts for visible-light-driven oxidative cleaning processes and antibacterial applications (also in the dark) were developed. In order to extend the photoactivity of titanium dioxide into the visible region, nitrogen-doped TiO2 catalysts with hollow and non-hollow structures were synthesized by co-precipitation (NT-A) and sol-gel (NT-U) methods, respectively. To increase their photocatalytic and antibacterial efficiencies, various amounts of silver were successfully loaded on the surfaces of these catalysts by using a facile photo-deposition technique. Their physical and chemical properties were evaluated by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (TEM-EDS), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS). The photocatalytic performances of the synthesized catalysts were examined in coumarin and 1,4-hydroquinone solutions. The results showed that the hollow structure of NT-A played an important role in obtaining high specific surface area and appreciable photoactivity. In addition, Ag-loading on the surface of non-hollow structured NT-U could double the photocatalytic performance with an optimum Ag concentration of 10-6 mol g-1, while a slight but monotonous decrease was caused in this respect for the hollow surface of NTA upon increasing Ag concentration. Comparing the catalysts with different structures regarding the photocatalytic performance, silverized non-hollow NT-U proved competitive with the hollow NT-A catalyst without Ag-loading for efficient visible-light-driven photocatalytic oxidative degradations. The former one, due to the silver nanoparticles on the catalyst surface, displayed an appreciable antibacterial activity, which was comparable to that of a reference material practically applied for disinfection in polymer coatings.

Project description:This work has been focused on the one-step fabrication by electrospinning of polyamide 6 (PA6) nanofibre membranes modified with titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2), where these TiO2 nanoparticles aggregates could induce a photocatalytic activity. The main potential application of these membranes could be the purification of contaminated water. Thus, it is important to analyse the contaminant degradation capability since in these membranes this is based on their photocatalytic activity. In this work, the effect of the photocatalysis has been studied both on the degradation of an organic model contaminant and on the removal of Escherichia coli and other coliform bacteria. As a result, it was observed that these membranes present excellent photocatalytic activity when they are irradiated under UV light, allowing a 70% reduction of an organic model pollutant after 240 min. In addition, these membranes successfully removed Escherichia coli and other coliform bacteria in artificially inoculated water after 24 h of contact with them. Moreover, the stand-alone structure of the membranes allowed for the reusing of the immobilized catalyst. The experimental evidence indicated that developed nanofibre membranes are a fast and efficient solution for polluted water decontamination based on photocatalysis. Their use could contribute to guarantee a fresh water level and quality, mitigating the water scarcity problem worldwide.

Project description:In recent years, massive bacterial infections have led to human illness and death, reminding us of the urgent need to develop effective and long-lasting antimicrobial materials. In this paper, Ag-TiO2/ZIF-8 with good environmental friendliness and biological antibacterial activity was prepared by solvothermal method. The structure and morphology of the synthesized materials were characterized by XRD, FT-IR, SEM-EDS, TEM, XPS, and BET. To investigate the antibacterial activity of the synthesized samples, Escherichia coli and Bacillus subtilis were used as target bacteria for experimental studies of zone of inhibition, bacterial growth curves, minimum bactericidal concentration and antibacterial durability. The results demonstrated that 20 wt.%Ag-TiO2/ZIF-8 had the best bacteriostatic effect on E. coli and B. subtilis under dark and UV conditions compared to TiO2 and ZIF-8. Under the same conditions, the diameter of the inhibition circle of 20 wt% Ag-TiO2/ZIF-8 is 8.5–11.5 mm larger than that of its constituent material 4 wt% Ag-TiO2, with more obvious antibacterial effect and better antibacterial performance. It is also proposed that the excellent antibacterial activity of Ag-TiO2/ZIF-8 is due to the synergistic effect of Ag-TiO2 and ZIF-8 under UV light. In addition, the prepared material has good stability and durability with effective antimicrobial activity for more than 5 months.

Project description:Black TiO2 with abundant oxygen vacancies (OVs)/B-doped graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) Z-scheme heterojunction nanocomposites are successfully prepared by the one-pot strategy. The OVs can improve not only photogenerated carrier separation, but also the sorption and activation of antibiotic compounds (tetracycline hydrochloride, TC). The prepared heterojunction photocatalysts with a narrow bandgap of ∼2.13 eV exhibit excellent photocatalytic activity for the degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride (65%) under visible light irradiation within 30 min, which is several times higher than that of the pristine one. The outstanding photocatalytic property can be ascribed to abundant OVs and B element-dope reducing the bandgap and extending the photo-response to the visible light region, the Z-scheme formation of heterojunctions preventing the recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes, and promoting their effective separation.

Project description:The absorption ability and photocatalytic activity of photocatalytic materials play important roles in improving the pollutants removal effects. Herein, we reported a new kind of photocatalytic material, which was synthesized by simultaneously designing hierarchical porous magnesian (PM) substrate and TiO2 catalyst modification. Particularly, PM substrate could be facilely prepared by controlling its crystal phase (Phase 5, Mg3Cl(OH)5 · 4H2O), while Ag/AgCl particles modification of TiO2 could be achieved by in situ ion exchange between Ag(+) and above crystal Phase. Physiochemical analysis shows that Ag/AgCl/TiO2/PM material has higher visible and ultraviolet light absorption response, and excellent gas absorption performance compared to other controls. These suggested that Ag/AgCl/TiO2/PM material could produce more efficient photocatalytic effects. Its photocatalytic reaction rate was 5.21 and 30.57 times higher than that of TiO2/PM and TiO2/imporous magnesian substrate, respectively. Thus, this material and its intergration synthesis method could provide a novel strategy for high-efficiency application and modification of TiO2 photocatalyst in engineering filed.

Project description:The pod-shaped TiO2 nano burst tubes (TiO2 NBTs) were prepared by the combination of electrospinning and impregnation calcination with oxalic acid (H2C2O4), polystyrene (PS) and tetrabutyl titanate. The silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were loaded onto the surface of TiO2 NBTs by ultraviolet light reduction method to prepare pod-shaped Ag@TiO2 NBTs. In this work, we analysed the effect of the amount of oxalic acid on the cracking degree of TiO2 NBTs; the effect of the concentration of AgNO3 solution on the particle size and loading of AgNPs on the surface of TiO2 NBTs. Scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy investigated the surface morphology of samples. X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy characterized the structure and composition of samples. Rhodamine B (RhB) solution was used to evaluate the photocatalytic activity of pod-shaped TiO2 NBTs and Ag@TiO2 NBTs. The results showed that TiO2 NBTs degraded 91.0% of RhB under ultraviolet light, Ag@TiO2 NBTs degraded 95.5% under visible light for 75 and 60 min, respectively. The degradation process of both samples was consistent with the Langmuir-Hinshelwood first-order kinetic equation. Therefore, the catalytic performance of the sample is: Ag@TiO2 NBTs > TiO2 NBTs > TiO2 nanotubes.

Project description:Ag nanoparticle was found to significantly enhance the photocatalytic activity of self-organized TiO2 nanotube structures. Herein, novel Ag/TiO2 tube-in-tube fibers have been prepared by a facile electrospinning technology and calcination process. Employed as the photocatalyst, the composite could efficiently catalyze the photodegradation of the model organic pollutant, rhodamine B under visible light irradiation, exhibiting a superior photocatalytic activity than the undoped TiO2 tube-in-tube fibers. This enhanced activity has been ascribed to plasmonic characteristics of Ag nanoparticles, which promote the light absorption and charge transfer feasibility. The simple, low-cost and green fabrication route of the composite provides a novel means for preparing similar materials, holding great promise for wider application in the future.

Project description:Oxygen vacancy (Vo) creation and morphology controlling make significant contributions to the electronic and structural regulation of metal oxide semiconductors, yet an investigation about convenient approaches for fabricating hierarchical catalyst with abundant oxygen vacancies still has significant challenges. Here, we report a unique method to create abundant oxygen vacancies in hierarchical Ag/TiO2 nanoflowers during photocatalytic reaction, which is accompanied by light absorption variation and surface plasmon resonance (SPR) enhancement. Its high efficiency of photocatalytic H2 evolution (the highest apparent quantum yield reaches 3.2% at 365 nm) and rhodamine B degradation can be considered as benefits from the synergistic effects of the well-arranged hierarchical structure, the photogenerated oxygen vacancies, and the SPR of cocatalyst Ag. This work proposes an effective strategy to optimize the synthesis of regular hierarchical structures and enriches the research on the vital function of oxygen vacancies in photocatalytic reactions.

Project description:Photocatalysts show great potential in environmental remediation and water splitting using either artificial or natural light. Titanium dioxide (TiO2)-based photocatalysts are studied most frequently because they are stable, non-toxic, readily available, and highly efficient. However, the relatively wide band gap of TiO2 significantly limits its use under visible light or solar light. We herein report a facile route for controllable synthesis of Ti(3+)-doped TiO2 with tunable photocatalytic properties using a hydrothermal method with varying amounts of reductant, i.e., sodium borohydride (NaBH4). The resulting TiO2 showed color changes from light yellow, light grey, to dark grey with the increasing amount of NaBH4. The present method can controllably and effectively reduce Ti(4+) on the surface of TiO2 and induce partial transformation of anatase TiO2 to rutile TiO2, with the evolution of nanoparticles into hierarchical structures attributable to a high pressure and strong alkali environment in the synthesis atmosphere; in this way, the photocatalytic activity of Ti(3+)-doped TiO2 under visible-light can be tuned. The as-developed strategy may open up a new avenue for designing and functionalizing TiO2 materials for enhancing visible light absorption, narrowing band gap, and improving photocatalytic activity.

Project description:Based on the low utilization rate of visible light and the high-charge carriers-recombination efficiency of bismuth oxybromide (BiOBr), in this work, noble metal Ag was used to modify BiOBr, and Ag-doped BiOBr nanoplates (Ag-BiOBr) were obtained through a one-step hydrothermal method. Compared with BiOBr, the absorption edge of Ag-BiOBr showed a redshift from 453 nm to 510 nm, and the absorption efficiency of visible light was, obviously, improved. Bisphenol A (BPA) was chosen as the target pollutant, to evaluate the photocatalytic performance of the samples. Ag0.1-BiOBr showed the highest degradation efficiency. The intrinsic photocatalytic activity of Ag0.1-BiOBr, under visible light, was approximately twice as high as that of BiOBr. In this way, a new visible-light-driven photocatalyst was proposed, to fight against organic pollution, which provides a promising strategy for water and wastewater treatment.
